Yuzuru Hanyu: 2018-2019

My perception over the last three seasons: Yuzu's biggest problem in the first 1-2 competitions was a new program, new jump or radical layout change.

Remember his SP in 2015: at ACI and SC he put his 4T into the second half to get the 10% bonus. He's never tried that layout before. And failed.
At NHK he changed his mind and went for two quads in the first half, which suited him better. Obviously.
FS in 2015: Completely new program and first time that he attempted three quads in his free. (Despite that he performed pretty well at SC.)

2016: Two new programs, very late preparation at TCC plus 4Lo and 4S+3T debut. No surprise that many things went wrong.

2017: 4Lz debut and Yuzu made radical changes in his freeskate layout. At ACI I had the feeling that he didn't know what he wanted to do at all. Going for the quads? No quads but triples? And the music went on and on...

Currently he has no new jumps (except 4A maybe) and he seems to feel very comfortable with his new programs. So if he doesn't experiment too much at ACI and Finland GP this season but sticks to one layout, there's a good chance to beat his "bad-start-curse". Eventually
I’m just worried about the 30 sec that was lost in the free. The men that was competing this weekend look wrecked at the end of their program, one even forgot his 3A altogether. Shoma who is known for his stamina look beat and he have been doing ice shows all summer.
I praying Yuzu will do decent at ACI. His decent is enough to beat the men there.

It's so crazy that ACI is in less than a week

First pancake :cheer:

I'm really surprised that Yuzu himself calls the 4:00 FS harder. I mean: his previous 4:30 freeskates have been so transition-packed already... Now he has less jumps in the second half, no uncomfortable Flip or Lutz and one complete jumping pass less
I do believe that Nijinsky feels harder, because Yuzu is completely escalating with transitions now  Seimei and H&L were difficult as well, but still had little breathers here and there...

In case of the other guys... they have less time to prepare their jumps now. Option 1: shorter jump entries. Option 2: less choreo. #2 is bad for PCS, #1 is a forlorn hope, especially with quads...

It will probably take at least half a season for them all to get the hang of how the shorter time works, I think most of the skaters and their coaches etc knew intellectually it would mean they had to streamline what they were doing but possibly didn't take it in fully (it's been four and a half for their entire careers!), and were still mentally 'scoping' the old time.

Yuzuru indicates he has really thought it through, the fact that he does openly say it's hard means he's put the work into getting both mind and muscle memory into the concept. My worry is that he want have fully accepted the idea that a little streamlining of the things he packs into the programs is going to be unavoidable. And won't won't to give any of his gorgeous moves and bits and pieces up... and he has to.

I think Shae-Lynn and the other choreographers also have to really work on the change, it's quite a big one for them too when you think of it; she's brilliant though, I have faith.

(Can I say how happy I was when Yuzu went with his Olympic choreo team again? - Jeff SP, She-Lynn FS, David EX.)

Can we have a little guessing game on the color scheme of costume? I am often wrong but my guess is:

SP: red/silver
FP: black/white

But Yuzu doesn't like silver much

My guess/hope is Otonal - red/autumnal colours, but I wouldn't be surprised to see blue, he does love it
Origin - black and gold, please please please....

SP: red/silver
FP: black/white
SP: something bright like orange

FS: black and gold

[emoji16]

And of course, with sparkles and frills as usual.

I would love red, but I would bet blue. With frills and stuff obviously. Although who knows, maybe he'll want something more different to what Jonny wore.
Definitely hoping for Yuzu in black for the free

He hates silver anything and he probably thinks red is bad luck cuz of CoC. I would love to see him in red and white for the short though.
Black and gold with hints of dark blue, like indigo tone.
Of course everything is sparkled and lace and maybe see through mesh.

SP: Blue top with frills, black trousers and shades of gold embroidered all around
FP: Black top with gold detaling and some see through parts, black trousers with gold lining at the side from waist to ankle.

Mine is

SP: white (or cream white)
FP: black and red (and it would be nice for me if it was open collared costume like POTO of blue :p)

My guess would be: for the Origin it will be close to Plushenko. black with rhinestones/glitters . For the Otonal something white and blue but please don't copy johnny weir's costume lol

I think he will add his own color to it. He likes being original, and I can't imagine doing a 100% tribute even with the costumes.

From what I understand from his media day, it seems that for him 4 mins FS is hard because of there are so many contents need to be fit in shorter time, thus making the choreography seems busy(?). And we've seen it already from how short he held his ina bauer, hydroblade, and his steps before jump.

Otonal > Will be happy for a yellow-red-black gradient similar to Etude and H&L
Origin > Black, not a flowy type of costume a la Weir

My guess would be a gold/yellow colored ruffled shirt for the SP, and black/white or green/black/white for the free.
