Mikhail Kolyada

It might have been simply a case of skating too early in the SP, I am certain that the contrast with other skaters would have played to his advantage if he skated in the last group
Btw, judges broke the rules giving Misha all 9s for a program with a fall, PE and IN should have been <9. I hope this doesn't happen again (regardless of Misha) because what's the point in new (or any) rules if the judges immediately start ignoring them.

Here’s the link. Discussion about Misha begins around the 38:30 mark.

Many thanks for this! I am so pleasantly surprised Mika was discussed at length (you would never know from the discussion of that interview in the Edge - one word Evgenia ;)) and how many good things they said about his skating.

They also talked about him in the Ondrei Nepela/ACI review:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IexWmocirE

I absolutely loved that they admired his posture, perfect stretch, strength of his upper body (even if it compromises his flexibility somewhat), that comparison to Baryshnikov - wow! I would add also his well turned out feet (nobody else ever notices but I do and love it in skaters hence Sasha Cohen as my biggest skating crush :)
In fact, Mika will be a fool if he never does a classical ballet program because he has all the qualities in spades!

That was not a fall - he got up fast as lightning, one fall for a toreador as allowed
Besides the rules are meant to be broken...

Since when there is such a rule? I remember there being sufggestions to not give 10s when a skaters/team had a fall, but nothing about 9s. It would be a good rule thoguh.

Considering that he could do a Biellmann until fairly recently (maybe still can, just not allowed to), I doubt it is flexibility that is a problem. Nobody notices his turnout? I've seen people comment on it quite a few times. How would he have such a beautiful spread eagle without it? But then if some people think his SS is lacking?.. Not everyone needs to consider him a second Patrick Chan, but if his SS is weak then a substantial proportion of skaters have negative skating skills. I've seen a couple of opinions like that but they were from people who don't like a single thing about him because he spit in their soup or something.

Also, what do they mean "why wasn't he doing a quad toe the whole time?" He was doing a quad toe the whole time.

I don't like the idea of breaking rules, there is too much of it going on already. The element GOE of some skaters this season is just inexplicable. In particular, "very good height and very good length" on jumps is interpreted rather... loosely.

Since this season. But actually it is so that if there is a fall or some other serious error, then no 10s should be given. In case of more than one fall or serious error, PE and IN should remain below 9 and the rest below 9.50 So, his PCS was ok as he had only that one fall and no other serious errors.

The charter can be found here: https://www.isu.org/inside-single-p...g-system-fs/isu-handbooks-faq-sandp-skating-2
Yes, you are right, it must mean "multiple falls and/or multiple serious errors". I wish they had worded it more precisely.

Okay flexibility was not the best word to use probably it is more about that criticism Mika receives sometimes for a stiff upper body.

To be able to do a beautiful spread eagle is one thing (many skaters can) but to maintain turnout/pointed toes throughout the program is a way more difficult and takes energy too.

I guess his 4T was messed up a number of times last season that what they probably referred to

Ah well we always knew it will be 'same old same old' no matter how many times the rules change, FS will effectively remain a subjectively judged sport. I do like the idea to reward quality though especially as Mika benefits!

Pointed toes are about a lot of drilling till you don't have to expend conscious energy on it. Same as good posture. Ballet training.

Is it me or Misha look like he caught a cold? He didn't look too well in the K&C. He didn't have much success in the warm-up and he seemed a bit out of it. Hopefully, he can get better tomorrow.

Yes he looks very pale. Liza T had a flu last week maybe something goes round in St Petersburg?

Ah, the first time i liked and i was into his short program and then he had to botch not only the quad but also the axel. I also think that he has got something. The good news for me is that i start to like the short and don't be irritated by the music, IMO he started to sell it better, falls or no falls :clapper: ...

I agree, I really liked the short program this time around! Maybe the good video quality had something to do with it. I can’t wait to see Carmen and his beautiful red costume 😍

Hope Misha’s okay. He doesn’t have to win everything this early in the season, though I’d be happy if he did :)

Well the way things are going he is going at least to win the short ;) what a competition :scratch2: I was sure that either Aliev or Erokhov would rush in the door Mika has left wide open...

I'm just wondering how the free is going to go. He and Junhwan are very close

All the top guys kinda had problems this time. Between pops and falls, Misha still had a decent program compared to the rest. :confused2:

Erokhov is straight after an injury, you can see he is undertrained right now. Aliev has a stupid SP layout that leaves no room for error.

What I an not quite happy about is Misha's reaction. Ok, you had a bad skate, it is frustrating, but ignoring journalists and not coming out for photos? Is everyone else supposed to jump off a building then? It's Finlandia for Crissakes. Well, at least he behaved that way afterwards and not started during the actual skate. I hope he cools down before the FS.

Well, when i think how Russian press and Tarasova & co (including this forum) reacted to his Oly debacle, like he was the first in the Universe to have a meltdown, i am not surprised that he reacts like this. I have the impression that while for the other top male skaters they find understanding for not delivering, they don't react the same with Mika. Aliev and Voronov are not crucified each time when they not land a quad, just saying.

I don't think Misha's reaction after that skate was "OMG what would TAT say?" That came from his own expectations of himself. It is as if after Nepela, or even before the season's start, he expected to have good skates every time in the future. Yes, there was no reason to fall from that 4T (unless ice quality was a problem considering how everyone else did), but still it seemed like a bit of an overreaction.

lets not rush to judge we don't know all the ins... i am a bit upset that he made other mistakes after the fall but look it just wasn't his day he still fought for everything. Better luck for tomorrow - fingers crossed

It's not about our judgement, I am concerned about his reaction, he certainly didn't look like "well, it isn't my day" in the K&C.

I thought he looked a bit sick. But if that's not the case, he looked really down on his spirits. Valentina was even trying to get him to relax, but I feel like he's putting a load of pressure on himself. But as I also said before, considering how the other guys did, it wasn't a terrible skate at all.
