Nathan Chen

I really don’t think Nathan will be sticking with his FS layout - even though it worked very well at Skate America. Guessing his goal is a 5 quad FS.

Wondering if he will also be adding another quad in the SP - a 4lz in the bonus ?!

I think he will add more quad also.

I think for the SP he should maybe jump 4T and 4Lz. BV is not much different than with 4F but success rate is likely much higher.

That's what I was thinking too, do a 4T and add either the 4Lz or the 4F, depending on which one's more stable at the time... I think 4Lz AND 4F is too risky, but it's probably what he will be going for...

Chen takes it easy

I guess if you call four quads in your two programs taking it easy, that’s what Nathan Chen did en route to a blowout win. Much like last year, Chen’s plan is to be gradual in working his way up in the number of quad jumps. Here in Everett, he did quad flip in the short and one lutz and two toes in the free. (Oh right, and two-for-two on his triple axel, what?) It gave him a sense of freedom in both programs to focus more of his energy on choreography - a good step, especially given some of the jump-to-jump skating that he did at times in his free skates.

As he progresses in this season and adds more difficult technical content, you wonder if he can maintain (or even improve) his attention to the in-betweens. He knows it’s a must … and perhaps after this weekend, he might know that six quads is no longer a must anymore if he can deliver artistically as well.

I assume that’s the case as well, which is... risky, as a fall caps PCS in ways it didn’t previously and the raw BV for the 4F and the 4Lz isn’t what it used to be. (Per ISU: a fall or a serious error caps PCS at <9.5 for SS, TR, and CO, and <9.0 for PE and IE. Last page of the updated scoring rules and SoV.) Which is an admittedly creative way of handling the fact that PCS has come close to maxing out for a number of skaters, but it also makes it much riskier to go for a layout that has slightly higher BV but much more risk of “serious error.” We’ll just have to see.

I’m actually a bit more concerned about the 3Lo-3Lo combo, as that’s a combo that carries a serious risk of hip problems and I really don’t ever want to see Nathan anything less than happy and healthy.

That was never a real planned combo. It was either a typo or a placeholder for whatever Nathan decided to do--either a 4lo or 3lo.

That was what I assumed at first, but with Nathan, I’ve learned to accept that anything can and will happen. [emoji23]

“Ask me later” would be a more appropriate line on his submitted mayouts.
