What Katarina has is major star power that goes beyond skating. She has that 'Look. At. Me.' factor that just commands your attention. She draws your eye and locks it down even if she is just doing crossovers. She projects that bullet-proof confidence that everyone wants to have. She has first rate performance quality and the ability to project emotion to the audience. I think it came naturally to her and that is one of the reasons she is unforgettable to even casual fans who couldn't tell you what jumps or spins she performed.

I absolutely love seeing that moment in Alina's Carmen that reminds me of Katarina. There is no point in comparing the two technically. I mean I guess you can but why would you want to? We are in a different world now. Katarina's Carmen is an iconic performance for reasons that go beyond anything technical.

I hope with all my heart that Alina's amateur skating career lasts long enough for her to develop to her full artistic potential. It would be amazing to see her go to a second Olympic games and see how much her performance could evolve. Even Katarina became Katarina. Who knows what Alina will be at 19?
 
Alina looks so very well trained in this practice video.
She was so focused the entire time.

When I saw people's comments that she hit all her jumps, I thought they were talking about the program run-through.

I didn't realize it was EVERY jump in the ENTIRE practice!!!!

A couple of small bobbles or slight UR here of there, but she is a human - not a machine.

I was completely mesmerized and impressed.

Other random things....
Alina maximizes her ice time right until the end.
Skating between the 2 people with the buckets.

How do the skaters avoid each other during practice?
I saw a couple of "close" calls that didn't seem to faze Alina or the other skater.

I loved the tissue box.
At first I thought it was some sort of stuffed toy.

Alina had a perfect training day, all her elements looked so solid, she did not make any mistake :biggrin: She's going to rock this competition, I am so excited about tomorrow :yahoo:

I am smiling seeing Alina and Eteri like two friends, smiling and joking with one another. I remember when Alina confessed that during her first trainings with Eteri she was a little bit afraid of her, but now their relationship is very relaxed and warm.:thumbsup:

Your last question is a point of curiosity for me too: I’ve seen nearly every single skater do that, Nathan and Hanyu included. My best guess would be that spins and choreo are “easier” elements to nail and yet, spins in this case, are taxing on your back so no need to needlessly practice them as the skater assumes she/he can accurately perform it in the program.

I’ve also heard that great spins are an ability that skaters acquire by practicing them over and over in training. So maybe they feel that they have done them enough prior to competition so that they can now let them go for a while to focus on being secure on their all important jumps.

Anyway back to posture. I’ve never been bothered by it, truly, but it is a persistent criticism from lots of people (with Alina and a few other skaters) I’ve never even considered this an issue before, someone leaning forward as they skate, maybe as a side effect of my lack of actual figure skating expertise, I tend to look (on first watch for sure) at things as a whole and if I like the whole then I enjoy it.

I like Alina so much that apart from glaring stuff (like a fall) I’m dazed into deep enjoyment whenever I see her.

Since this seems to be an issue that’s worth addressing my hope is that as she matures even more as a skater and gets more seasons under her belt she will gradually fix this. When she was a little kid (thanks to FreeSkate’s video channel) you can see that she didn’t have that issue. She didn’t have all these difficult jumps and transitions either so maybe that was a trade off she made for some reason, maybe it makes her feel more secure on execution skating this way. It’s probably the same thing with speed, she can be super fast but when she is focused on getting it right she is noticeably slower.

Hope the judges always see her virtues which are plenty and reward her for that.

On the other hand, I have seen this issue brought up by multiple posters in multiple threads, but I tend to skim those posts because I don't like reading criticism of Alina. :biggrin:

She's never done it, at least there hasn't been any reports from practice (she's certainly never performed it in competition). It doesn't look likely she will ever do it - her 2A improved significantly over summer, but it still doesn't look like it can be upgraded to 3A. On the other hand - you never know with this girl! 3.5 years ago when she came to Eteri she only had 2A, 3S and 3lo! 3 years after that she's OGM with 7 triples programme!

I don’t think she’s done one. And it’s very unlikely she will. Her 2A is solid, but she tends to slow down as she goes into the jump to keep it rather small. And she’s said the Salchow is the jump that makes her most nervous, I think. I assume that she’s not a natural edge-jumper and prefers the toe jumps.

Extremely solid showing in practice. Go Alina! Liking the Carmen more since we last saw it.

Same here, I always thought this is part of the choreo, and did not bother me at all. But I am no expert, I just love Alina and find her skating the most beautiful and always a pleasure to watch :biggrin:

I know it's a matter of taste. Maybe if I would become a fan in those times (that means when I was 9 y.o. :) ), I would see that differently. But now, I can't see better Carmen than Alina.

I would say no. I think that all triple axel ladies (with Mao Asada being the exception) have had EXPLOSIVE double axels with a lot of height.

I could be wrong, but I don't think she will ever attempt it. Even if she had the capability, I think the jump is still too risky.
If you fall, you get -5 GOE and -1 for the fall. If it is UR - you don't even get credit for the 3A.
But the main thing is the long setup for the jump. And inferring from what the judges did to Liza T's perfect 3A just last week, that can certainly hurt the GOE.

We will certainly get better idea of the risk/reward of the 3A with Liza T's next GP, and Rika Kihira's 2 GP's coming up.
