Its nowhere near inside edge, its flat. at most he should get ! for that. and tech panel is/ should be ok, Okabe is referee and specialist is very experienced Polish, so I don't think they will have such eyesight problems to give this e call
I’m just nervous because of the calls on the flips everyone is getting. 😔

For the last few years, his flips has always been on a flat edge, sometimes with a slight inside. If the callers are doing their job correctly, then there is no need to worry about an 'e' call.

Then again this season the panel has been calling clear inside edged flips 'e' so.....:palmf:

OK, I lived the practice was great and yuzu was in a playful mode. He poped some jumps and fell 3 times but he didn't seem concerned so I'm OK. He did beautiful jumps and seeing him doing the cooling down is very relaxing . Hope more tomorrow!

Playful mood is good, he was like that at the Olympics....

How did the spins look?

Yeah, though given the lip he used to have, it’s kind of amazing how solid his flip edge has been in recent years.

I don’t see reason for an edge call. The flip can be done with a deep inside edge, but ISU’s own model shows a slight inside edge.

For some reason, I’m not worried about Yuzu getting an edge call, at least not an undeserved one. The flip edge calls at Skate America were generally okay? I found Nathan’s !/attention call odd, but I admit that while the highlight footage doesn’t show an issue, it’s entirely possible it was an unclear edge to the TP (who were strict on everyone). If Yuzu goes for a 3F, I assume he’ll do it the way he’s done over the last few seasons — toe pick angled inward, slight inside edge, no call. If it’s unclear, he may get benefit of the doubt or a ! at worst. But his flip looks the same as it has since he fixed his “let me just visibly change over to an outside edge” issues, so I’m not overly concerned?

He skates 9th, so we’ll know if the TP is day drinking or not by the time he does his short and can calibrate panic appropriately. [emoji23]

From the run through videos, much better than at ACI. First position in the sit spin could get called and looked noodly, assuming he takes that position in the actual skate rather than just for energy conservation, but we got the revs before and after change of foot right. Camel was gorgeous. Lots of speed, very centered on all spins. Largely looking like what we expect from Yuzu spins. I’m going off of this footage:

Good stuff :agree:

Being new since last year, I am fairly gobsmacked by the sheer number of vids/photos/tweets of our Yuzu and the size of the audience for the practice... we're reminded again that he's on a whole other level of attention. And if he has made even the slightest wardrobe alteration.... the fans will go mental.

But he looks wonderful, happy and relaxed and confident and healthy. Everything we want for him (well, apart from golden

Wow I feel like when i am visiting Helsinki tourists spots they are flooded with Japanese women and I think we know the reason haha. Anyways, today my sister might be the luckiest person in the world. She isn't a fan or even interested in figure skating, but I pulled her along with the promise i will pay for her competition tickets. Anyways, we were watching pairs practice, which was before men's practice, and wanted to go to the bathroom. As we left the rink our way was totally blocked by Hanyu fans waiting outside of the skater's waiting room to try to catch Hanyu's arrival. My sister don't like crowds so she walked down the hallway to go the opposite direction when she turned a corner at the same time Yuzu turned the corner and she almost smashed right into him. she was like his face was right in front of my face:eek:. I didn't get to be that close to Yuzu but did managed to watch him walk down the hallway into the skater's waiting room. i was surprised he didn't get there by some secret backdoor but rather just entered through the front through a bunch of fan girls. it was quite the sight.

I think Shirota is still on contract at least as I saw her walking around at ACI.

Really? Thank you for letting me know since I have been curious about Shirota's move this season :) (She has to write another book about Yuzuru, you know )

I hope both of them will do decent job

Generally there isn't opened practice for the public in the competitions held in Japan, so I bless them

Yeah, Yuzuru has... handled a crazy life with more grace than anyone could have asked for, in my opinion. He really does embody Japan. The New York Times wrote an an amazing profile of him. I don’t know how he manages to project and create such serenity amidst the chaos. But the way he zones out with his headphones is adorable and something I do. (Headphones on? NO TALKING.)

So far, he looks solid and definitely improved from ACI! I really hope he can perform a clean short, as the way he turns the knob up to eleven for the step sequence is my personal highlight. The free is going to be nervewracking and I stress-ate all the Japanese candy my boyfriend brought me as a complement to the Yuzu mags... I have no nails left to bite... Yuzu, land the 4T-3A and never stress us out this much again, please?

Also, am I the only one still shook by how big his runthrough 3A was? Yuzu’s 3A and Boyang’s 4Lz are going to hit the ceiling!

(he was asked about performing in Finland)

"What can I say? What can I say?" (his face :luv17:)
"My first international competition was in Finland and the land is a very lucky place for me, so in a way, it will be good if this becomes a good chance for my new start."

He looked like an excited little kid ready to show off!! Thanks for sharing this lovely clip.

Combo in the second half for the SP...can someone please kindly reassure me it's a worthwhile risk even though if you can't tag on that 2nd jump then you have no combo then the jump doesn't count...right? Has it always been this way?

Per ISU’s own rules: If there is no second jump in the jump combination, the Technical Panel identifies the intended combination during or after the program. If the TP can’t determine which jump is the intended solo jump, the jump that’s done later is called as +COMBO. That’s actually a change, as if the solo jump couldn’t be identified, the TP would make the call in favour of the skater (after calculating the GOE for a fall and adjusting for SoV) in past seasons.

The layout is actually similar to Ballade last season — 4S, 3A, 4T-3T, except only the combo is in the second half. As far as points go: it’s worth it if the 4T-3T is consistent, which it largely has been for Yuzu. Is the 10% worth going for the combo later? Every fraction of a point helps. If you’re up against a field doing 4Lz and 4F (or both) in the short, the BV gap is less pronounced this season compared to past ones, but if those 4Lzs and 4Fs are getting +4/5 GOE, then you may need that extra 10%. The numbers: 4T+3T = 13.7 versus backhalf 4T+3T = 15.07. Is it worth it? Yeah, probably. It’s over a full point. And Yuzu’s not the only one with a lower-BV jump/“easier” jump in combination in the backhalf.

Comparing how much a +COMBO issue would be worth relative to prior seasons is arguably not possible with the new GOE range, PCS caps, etc. If a skater has a jump called +COMBO due to a fall or just inability to turn the intended combination jump into an actual combination, then the fall will lower their max PCS, and the lack of a combo could count as a serious error and lower average PCS values. We shouldn’t be seeing 40+ PCS for skates that don’t go well, which adds more volatility.

Yup, I saw her as I was walking to the concession stand. She’s easy to recognize since she’s quite short, she entered some room where I think some Japanese media were using.

I am happy for all those who had fun.
Later will be FS practice right? More sightings of 4T+3A+SEQ and 3F-3T. :agree:
