Skaters who date their coaches

I think that when they split up, which I believe is the case in both of the unions you cited, then it can be awkward and bad for the team. But then again, often times the partners date - then break up - and then manage to skate together....so whatever works. It was very successful for Zhulin and Navka.

Remember that girl that use to skate & do Ballet. I think her name was Katherine Healy. Didn't she marry her coach?
Are they dating? you must be kidding!
This to me is like the Boss-Dating-Secretary or College CoEd-Dating-Professor dynamic, especially the latter. I just find it kind of icky. Of course it depends in part on how old the participants are; there have been cases of 18-year-old skaters (or other female athletes) dating their in-30s or in-40s coaches and that just brings us back to icky.
Strangely, we never seem to hear of MALE skaters dating their female coaches. In part, there are some obvious reasons as to why this is not especially widespread, but on the other hand..... This might be a topic for a different thread entirely.

Tamara Bratus used to be coached by Igor Moskvin - and that's how we got Tamara Moskvina.
As to strange dynamic - how about Victor Petrenko who is married to his coach's daughter. Can you imagine training with your mother-in-law?!

Interesting observation! I guess this is all about how men and women relate to authority figures.
Yeah, I'm not crazy about that either. Not with Steuer being still married (not even separated), and, quite frankly, a general creep.
Strangely enough, Navka has said in interviews that she could never skate with her husband. She says they tried it a bit when Kostomarov was with another partner and she desperately wanted to get back to ice, but soon realized that the marriage just would not handle such strain.It was very successful for Zhulin and Navka.

I think to some skaters, it looks even stranger when a male dates their coach, whether the coach is male or female, since oftentimes, the student is young, and the coach is a bit older. Can you imagine how the tongues would've wagged if Brian dated Linda Leaver? Or Yagudin dated Tarasova?

That's what I thought, too. As I recall, she was an aerobics instructor and then fancied herself a choreographer. And look what scintillating programs that led to.... :sheesh: :sheesh: :sheesh:

what about michelle's sister, Karen? She is married to Peter Obeggard.. but i don't know if he ever coached her.
