Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

IFS Magazine, december issue : :hap93:

"They have always been about exploring the boundless depths of their creativity and talent, about following their own path and not letting convention steer them in any direction.
It is who Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron are, and who they will likely always be.
But this, the three-time World ice dance champions from France will tell you, is truly a step in a new direction for them. One that is both daunting and exhilarating at the same time, but one that fits the four-year journey that will eventually take them all the way to the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing."

Oof, that quote is making me wonder if we are completely wrong about the song choice for the FD... They seem to be confident that it is not only different for them, but that it will be perceived as different by fans, which was the problem with Oddudua... The suspense is killing me!

I wonder if this "secretism" is a stragedgy, so that, when they finally reveal themselves, all eyes will be fixed on them.

I just think that they are super focused on their work.
I wouldn't mind some crumbs like instagram posts now and then ...
My nails won't take it much longer ... getting shorter and shorter
It's taking foreveeeeeer!:hopelessness:

And as we all know foreveeeeeeeeeeeeeeer is especially long towards the end

OK, a few days to go until the big reveal.
We know their RD music and it's gorgeous, fits them to a T.
We are extremely worried about the FD music, because we haven't found anything that really feels fitting for them while they speak at the same time about a new direction. Since we have no clue what to make of that, we are close to expecting disappointment, but still we owe them our trust. They've as yet to let us down, so this most probably will be a change that we'll all support and applaud.

Speaking of changes:
We have three Grand Prix behind us, and in my inhumble observation, due to GG's past 4 years, Ice Dance has changed dramatically. The new wind brings us dance/ballet instead of circus/musical.
So many teams bring choreographies that are much more intimistic (for crying out loud spell-check, MAKE it a word then!), much more abstract and much more artistic instead of technical/acrobatic.
Can anyone imagine that a team would come today with an Egypt/mummy theme? Anachronistic in all meanings of the word!

Still some teams come with programs that for me feel outdated. I don't know how to express it. It's about interpreting music, bringing dance, and not some technical number that is very well done.
There are still teams that get very high marks with technical stuff without real artistry, but I feel that that is going to die out and that interpretation and expression are going to become the rule. Let's see.

So yea, here we are. Now that everyone is into piano in-drawn arty stuff, GG are bringing guitars and train with circus people. Yow.

But I think 'folk' was probably a bad description.

Does this post sound coherent? No.
SHOW US THE BL**DY PROGRAMS!!! WE'RE BECOMING UNHINGED!!!

If they have the guts to go V/M style, windows are going to be smashed in.
Ye be warned!!!

Oh no no, please no ! Gabriella and Guillaume have their identity. I would HATE so see the try to skate like another pair just to please those claiming they have no "versatility". They just need to be themselved to be extraordinary. And they have the amazing ability to be themselves on a variety of styles and musics. It's their greatest strength. And I am sure they could skate to any music if they wanted to. They just carefully choose music that makes them feel on a particular moment. They don't decide what they want to look like or how they want to feel. It just comes naturally. And it shows when they perform.

I just hope they have a real, good guidance and that noone will try to push them in the wrong direction. Especially that dear good old Didier..........................

Anyway, I am getting impatient. 7 days feels like 7 years at the moment !!!!!!! :sad4:

You may be worried; I'm just interested (and impatient).

Maybe the right word is “ anxious “.

Very interesting post from Gotlev. I agree that we see now much more artistic and musical programs properly choreographed, even though the lifts go back to more acrobatic positions ( lots of heads down again) to be sure of level 4 and high GOE but at least now, they are mostly feating the music. The problem is that, precisely because most couples, now work in this direction, spectators ( public, fans and journalists) tend to get tired of this well behaved programs and applaud any program that seem to be wild and black even when it is an artistic nonsense and a fake. Bad taste becomes refreshing in a sea of goody goody. How to remain in the search of beauty in this landscape and still be different and special? This is the challenge G and G have to face. I think.

He made some pretty strange comments about them after the Olympics.
I really hope their "new style" is not them trying to please the masses. I always liked their edgy programms best (Oduadda).

I have great difficulty in defining what I consider old-fashioned and what I experience as genuine.
OK, this is GG's thread, but I have nowhere else to go to talk about stuff and compare programs. Humour me for a moment please.

You seem to be referring to S/B's FD, which in my opinion would be spectacular if they could pull it off technically (they're close but need some smoothness, that mountain climb lift makes me want to give her a ladder or a rope). I'm rooting for them to win many many medals, and I cannot say why I feel that way. They have 'it', somehow. They entertain me, excite me, make me want to shout and scream. This program just does it for me. I believe they are what they show.

The programs that don't do it for me but earn very high marks are H/D's and G/F's.
H/D simply don't have 'it', no matter what MF throws at them. I don't believe anything of what they want me to see, and I don't feel any emotion because I don't see them feel anything.
It's a repeat of a certain other couple that brings technical perfection and zero emotion (in my opinion)(and that seems unable to retire officially somehow )
And G/F do have 'it', but Barbara seems unable to get out of the circus/movie/musical style and has creativity and innovation somewhere locked away as if it was nuclear waste or so.
Don't get me wrong: this may sound like horribly harsh criticism but I do have great respect for all these people. I love to watch Barbara rinkside and in the K&C. I am sure they are all wonderful persons, they all seem extremely loveable. And they are unbelievably good skaters.

It's just that G/G and their coaches (because MF and RH must have been essential in at least the Mozart and Build A Home programs, which did the trick in fact) have done something to Ice Dance that I love to see picked up and acknowledged. Even if McNamara and Carpenter look like some GG copy/paste program, I love to see them do it and go for it. It's gorgeous to watch and they pull it off. In fact, most couples do.

Obviously, it's impossible to expect that every team gets to a place that is so genuine and 'own' as GG do. But I have good hopes that the search for expression of genuine beauty and dance is going to go on for quite a number of years.
I'm loving it.

Oddudua was totally brilliant. I really hope they can find such inspiration again this year. I'm quite expecting them to go for special, and I'm totally excited about that. Their genuinness is so deep that whatever they do, if it is what they believe in, it will be absolutely spectacular.

I haven't watched everyone yet, but so far I have enjoyed the SDs more than the FDs, but that just might be because I love the tango in general, haha!

I have complete faith in Gaby and Guillaume, but yes, I definitely want to finally see their programs and see what they have in store for us in terms of their evolution!!

Your comments made me think about what Didier said after the olympics. I just hope they won't follow his advice because he is a useless and oblivious.

This could have been happening after all. They dominated and then V/M came back with a more "in your face" popular style. And suddenly, they weren't winning anymore. So at some point, you can just put everything in question and decide to follow V/M's footsteps like so many skaters did before. It takes some courage to trust your instinct and continue your way. And then, despite coming so strong, they finished second, again, at the olympics. It must have been really difficult for them.

Like Lupina015, I really really hope they won't try to please the masses.

I felt like their programms mainly lived on show and the obvious chemistry between them, which I didn't really enjoy.

On a second note, it seems like a lot of couples put a lots of effort in seemless transitions and soft movements in their dances this season.
Couples like N/K, which never did this before, if I remember correctly. P/C really had a huge huge influence on Ice dancing in general over the last few years.
