2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Dasha‘s new interview... I feel really sorry for her. She seems like an incredibly sweet and thoughtful girl. Maybe that‘s the main problem: she might just be too soft, too sensitive for elite level competition. Don‘t be mistaken, I‘m not saying this to put her down at all, on the contrary, I see her struggling so much and it breaks my heart. It’s just that competing at such a big stage is mentally taxing and exhausting and not everyone is made for this. I think we tend to forget that these are young girls and they have all the struggles normal girls their age have...

I figured Dasha‘s problems weren‘t simply related to change of coach and it turns out to be true. The boot issues seem tough, as well as her injury. Poor girl. I know she wants to be a World Champion one day but I hope she looks at herself and whether or not this is what she really wants. Living with so much fear everyday, I don‘t know whether that‘s healthy... Of course I hope we‘ll see her skating at her best again and if she really wants this, she can achieve it. I just don‘t know whether it‘s worth it or not. But that‘s her decision.

Dasha, you‘re beautiful and you can be proud of yourself! Don‘t doubt yourself or your abilities or the way you look. You are amazing! :)

Alright I think it's time to move on to different subjects now...

Some ideas:
1. Liza's prospects at NHK, will she go for a harder layout? Will she be able to podium if Rika, Satoko and Mai go clean?
2. Masha's prospects at NHK. This is a wildcard, hopefully it won't be a repeat of Japan open.
3. Alena, Sasha and Anna this weekend. Will we see layout changes? Will Alena go for the 3a? Will Sasha put the 3t on the 4Lz instead? Will Anna bring back the 4t or will Sasha bring out a new quad (flip) ?
4. Rostelecom is coming up, will Alina be back to her almost 160 scoring form? Will Sofia somehow get silver and get a shot at the final?
5. How are the Eteri novices doing these days? I haven't heard much.
6. How is Tarakanova doing? We know she attempted the 4t in competition without success.
7. The JGP is going to be more interesting than the senior, we could discuss that.

I know I left a few things/ a few people out. My point is while I enjoy Evgenia, there's other things to discuss besides her. :)

1. If everyone goes clean, I think Liza gets bronze over Mai.
2. If everyone goes clean Masha will be 5-6. I still think clean Polina would beat her.
3. If they are all healthy I would LOVE to see 3A from Alena in both programs!
4. Hopefully only if she is perfection. It’s possible but not probable.
5. No idea.
6. Probably training like crazy so she can do one at JGPF.
7. Not to me, I think the GPF lineup will be what’s truly interesting.

I'll play :)
1. I think she'll focus on going clean. If everyone's clean, she should get bronze. If she messes up and others are clean, she'll be off the podium :(
2. They didn't look good at JO. Hoping to be wrong but the Buyanova influence is real.
3. I hope so! I'd love to see Alena's 3A if it's ready especially. 4F from Sasha would be fun too but I doubt it would come here.
4. I hope that at Rostelecom it's Alina - Sofia - Lil Bet (yes I know Tursynbaeva is not Russian :))
5. They are competing at Volkov. All of them - Kromykh and Akatieva are making their season debuts, Valieva and Usacheva add another competition
6. She won Mordovian Ornament, but if she adds the 4T at the JGPF, in its current condition, I can't see her landing it, which could push her to 6th :(
7. JGPF should be much more interesting than GPF (even if my pipedream hope of Zhenya, Alina, Liza, and Sonya all together in the final, which is unlikely anyway)

I hesitate to post, since I wouldn't be able to identify most Russian ladies' skaters out of a line up with a gun to my head, but....

Nat King Cole and Orange Colored Sky (and his daughter Natalie, who used his arrangement) are being filtered through a lens that I don't understand.:scratch2: Orange Colored Sky is *not* "sexy". It is a fun, almost novelty, tune. Nat King Cole never sang it for sexiness or romance, but for fun and perhaps, at most, sassiness.

The tune was written in 1930, although Nat popularized it in 1950. Again, not sexy, not sultry, but fun and flirty. To my mind there's a big difference.

Now I suppose there can be argument over whether Zhenya can do the fun and flirty (think Mariah Bell and Roxy) but this is not some Ice Dance "fake romance" number.
That is all:biggrin:

We simply go with Bezic's “a little sexy, a little sassy, a little naughty”

Speaking of little "devils". Some jump analysis, it's in Russian but the tables are in English if you scroll down.

This is where I expect to see Alena with a 3A if she plans on attempting it for JGPF. I just don't see her attempting it there without ever trying it in a competition before doing so. Otherwise, your guess's as good as mine. I doubt Sasha would bring out a new quad - The question is whether she would add a 4S. Anna's 4T will be very interesting to look for as well.
5. How are the Eteri novices doing these days? I haven't heard much.
We'll be able to see how Kamila Valieva, Maia Khromykh and Daria Usacheva are doing tomorrow. It'll also be Sofia Akatieva's season debut, which is something I've been greatly anticipating for a long time. Unfortunately, we're still going to have to wait for Veronika Zhilina's season debut. Her younger sister Alena will be skating, at least. She at 8 already has a 3S and 2A. So essentially, this weekend accounts for every Eteri novice other than Veronika.

This is where I expect to see Alena with a 3A if she plans on attempting it for JGPF. I just don't see her attempting it there without ever trying

My concern here is if she actually had the ability to train it. If I remember well her hand was injured and 3A involves some falls, you have to lean on your hand when you fall. So I think that small injury prevent her from some 3A training. I don't expect to see it yet. But the surprise will be more than welcome.

I think Russian ladies are in a very interesting state. We know next year, just around the corner there is an incredibly talented group of ladies BUT puberty is going to put some question marks to how they progress.

We have right now Alina Zagitova in the driver seat. Evgenia needs to step it up and the next competition will probably give us a better idea is she struggling or is she going to pull through.

Ditto for Liza she could be high as Russia no. 2 if Evgenia continues to struggle.

It appears Radinova with the latest injury is l ooking like a fading queen and out of the race. I have no idea where Pogo is. She doesn't seem to be even on the map. Polina Tsurksaya continues to show she is not a contender. Leonova is a no longer even a player though yay she is at NHK which I note also invited Reynolds so it is about popular skaters to the Japanese population and that do not threaten the Japanese desire to win men and women. There are some "newer" ladies that are in the mix Anna et al but they just seem so ho hum in a what is a transitional "weaker year where the Russians still are a threat for gold lol and challenging the Japanese ladies who seem to have it all but a bit inconsistent surprisingly - tough as per usual Miyahara is looking like a great threat

While I was amazed by the JGP circuit, I find the GP one more interesting so far. I can't wait for both finals though ^^

Do you know why Sofia A starts the season so later? Was she injured?

I really want to see Evgeina with Shae-lynn. Marin's Seven Nations Army by Shae-Lynn is very intricate and has become my fav program from Marin.
What surprised this season is how misfitting Evgenia looks in her programs. With her programs previous competitive programs and exhibitions, I believed Evgenia is a true artist and she can interpret any music, but it turned it's more of Eteri's packaging.

This is my last thought.

This season the programs that seem most natural to her are her Exhibition, then Tango free skate and last the Jazz short program.

The packaging is wrong with the Jazz. She is dressed too much like flapper and needs more of a 1950s style with a halter neck and red lips. That's what I see. I am hoping when Sandra Bezic does her finishing touches she gives some feedback about this. When she first started introduced this program to her, Sandra showed her pictures of pinup girls figure skating. If you want you can look this up in google images. Think Rockette.

The tango dress is nice but it's not my favorite. When I saw her practice at Skate Canada of her free skate, especially the step sequence to Libertango I thought Okay, she can sell this. She can sell it even more and she will.

Next season, I would like to see a return to an Averbukh program or Shae Lynn with the new skills she is learning from Brian and co.

Statistics about jump height, prerotation, rotation speed from Japanese, Russian and Korean junior skaters. It was posted in the Japanese ladies thread, so this is just a repost since I don't know how to quote across threads.
I think this can make for an interesting discussion. Something that was interesting to me was trying to think how can less prerotation be awarded. I don't have an answer though :D
PS. It's in Russian, but the tables are in English so you can understand the main points ^^

There is actually a separate thread on this topic. Check it out:

Does anyone know which juniors will skate at the gala at Rotelescom next week?

What happened to the forum? The interface is horrid, it looks like tabloid chat from the early 90s.
