2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Haven't had time to read the latest in this thread. Can someone update me on the number of times "Eteri" and "Orser" has been typed in this thread, and the corresponding number of death threats?

Nationals are going to be interesting as Medvedeva and Konstantinova did pretty much the same on this GP season, and technically Sofia did better, so assuming Zagitova and Tuktamysheva will be pushed more as they're the best two russian ladies in seniors, the third spot is wide open.

To change to a lighter/happier topic, Tarakanova is looking really great since moving to Plushenko. She reminds me a lot of Anna P with her intensity. Is she considered a senior now? Pity she wasn't at any of the GP events. I greatly prefer her to Sofia.

She isn‘t old enough for seniors. She just skated in the Russian Cup event as a senior because it‘s a domestic event. You can participate in National senior competition in Russia if you are 14, I think. That‘s why Shcherbakova, Kostornaya, Trusova and Tarakanova as well will all be at senior RusNats this year.

I think it's more open than that. If Zagitova fails and have a deja vu Worlds moment, and Tuktamysheva misses her 3A - all three spots are wide open. And the Russians have been very consistent with giving the top 3 eligible girls at Nationals the pass to Europeans and Worlds.

The whole post

This is not a fanfest or comments on her Instagram. This is supposedly an "analytical discussion" about what's going on with ideas about what to do. I really doubt that Medvedeva and her team read this particular thread so this discussion neither aggravates not relieves the pressure on her. But even if they did?

I am stating what is obvious to me. In my eyes in less than a year she, who I thought was the best skater ever, reduced to the Cup of France performance. And as her each next performance is worse than the previous one and her each next score is lower than the previous one I simply don't see the light in the end of the tunnel. No matter, how crazy and abusive to some the idea to return to Eteri may seem if on the one hand is her career which may end this season already if she bombs the Nationals and on the other hand all the hassle of this move, I am not sure that the answer is crystal clear.

She is a professional athlete focused on results. To paraphrase the bland "come back to Eteri with apologies" I could devise more flexible "consider her training options". Because without results her emotions will be of no news value here and she will be only remembered as other not competing athletes are remembered.

And for the 10th time or so.

1) Caro or Osmond's comeback stories are irrelevant. They came back to their countries' deserts. Everyone was waiting for their comeback. I am sure that Canadian fans truly hope that Kaetlyn returns because who are competing for Canada now, Alaine, Larkyn? Who are competing for Italy? Russia is different. Cutthroat competition. No one will be waiting for anyone's return.

2) You may have whatever Olympic or other ambitions. There are still only 3 team spots and it does not seem that ISU is going to change it. Then the question is who you compete against, now, in 18 months (there were 2 milestones in Borser's interview, 18 months and 4 years), and in 4 years? Even last season Medvedeva lost on TES. In 18 months there will be quad girls. In 4 years? How is she going to compete with them to be at least one of the three? Which brings to the next question.

3) What is her team strategy? What they said so far made no sense to me. Rework the basics? Why? How many points will it add to her 236 Olympic performance? My answer is it will add nothing. I told it more than once and will tell again: the only major tech improvement one could think about is to fix lutz edge, then to replace flip with lutz, add Loop combo. This could take 18 months for sure. What did they do in fact? Not fixing anything they immediately brought 3 lutzes. Now they rush to bring flip back but working on lutz apparently deteriorated her flip.

4) The clock is ticking. As her TES is lagging and will never match the new crop of skaters she could rely mostly on her reputation (pcs). This reputation is vanishing. What is left? Who will believe her if in 18 months she starts to claim that she is better skater than she was during the previous quad. Once again, no 3A or quads on the horizon.

These are all relevant questions to me. And they are worth discussing. At least to me they are much more relevant and interesting than those "analytical" threads about Medvedeva 2-3 seasons ago.

If Liza can make GPF and potentially the Europeans/Worlds team this year after being written off for the past several years, then Evgenia can qualify for GPF and the Russian top 3 in any future season even if she doesn't this time.

The Russian ladies always manage to surprise us. Sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way. Old lady Liza has gotten her groove back. Sometimes juniors go senior and struggle and never deliver on their potential.

I think they will try to save Zagitova no matter what unless she bombs big time (and yet they could still give her the benefit of the doubt because she is the Olympic Champion and send her anyway as they did in 2013 with Kovtun)

As for Tuktamysheva she has rarely been pushed by the federation so if she bombs, i can totally see some CSKA skater being rewarded more and grabbing that spot, but this season she looks on fire.

I've to say, as crazy as it is, i wouldn't mind to see Stasya Konstantinova at Worlds again, as she was lovely in the free today.

They didn't save Lipnitskaya in 2015, though she was an Olympian hero after the team event.

Me too:yahoo:

So far Liza is just a cameo, nice but still. And there are so many aspects that make her situation different from Medvedeva's.

1. Why cameo? No big competitions so far. I enjoy her style and wish her all the best. But she still has not convinced me that her clean skates are the rule rather than exceptions. If she manages to skate like she skated in Japan at GPF and Nationals, then, yes, Liza is back!

2. Liza has changed nothing. She is still with Mishin and she skates like she skated 4 years ago. No "rework the basics". Just come back to where you were before.

3. Her problems were mostly because of the lack of motivation (according to public sources). Now she seems to find this motivation.

4. Liza has 3A

Why does Sotskova look so disappointed about her scores? Isnt she aware that she underrotates? That's really a serious question, I thought skaters could recognize an UR from the ice trace they leave after landing.

Talking about stanislava. Maybe her long program brought back bad memories for evgenia. Just a thought .

She didn't have such chance, to be honest. Everybody left her at one point (speaking of her star-students at least). And the reason, I think, lies in high competition at her camp. So I won't degrade Eteri's position to just a kids coach only.

People also forget that she’s a relatively young coach. The only opportunity she would’ve even had to coach a skater to their 20s is Polia S. Even Yulia would only have been 19 at the previous olympics. I think she is still developing her coaching methods, demonstrated by the stepwise improvements made from Polina to yulia to zhenya to Alina, so it’s really quite early to be judging based on the criteria of skater age.

Liza and Evgenia are obviously different skaters in different situations. That doesn't really matter though. The point is that anyone can come back after falling into irrelevancy. Evgenia is at serious risk of not making the European/Worlds teams this year. That doesn't mean she will never make them again.

I don’t want to sound unsupportive of Zhenya, but this is the first competition where Russian Ladies were entered and didn’t place on the podium...

But maybe time away from competition for a while will pay off. Nonetheless, I still love Zhenya very much. Same for Masha, I really hope she works on URs and levels. She always gets the hard assignments.

The first...how about Worlds 2018? The French GP was by no means the first. It happens folks and no doubt will again, as ice is slippery and anything can and will happen. Rather than blame, it's time to move on.

They didn't save Lipnitskaya in 2015, though she was an Olympian hero after the team event.

But they saved Medvedeva last year. I mean, she didn't compete, they could chose not to send her at all and pick the top 3 senior instead.

Lipnitskaya's situation was different.
So far this season, Zagitova has a CS gold and 2GP golds and a great performance at JO.
Lipnitskaya in 2015 had 2 GP silvers and was 5th at GPF.
I mean, why would they send her ahead of the top finishers at nationals? Who would they kick? Radionova, 2GP golds, GPF silver? Tuktik, who already won 6 golds that season, including GPF? Pogo, with a GP gold and silver and 4th at GPF (beating Yulia at least twice)?

Basically, pretty sure they will not look at the past achievements, but at how well the skater does at the current season. Based on Zagitova's season so far, she will be in the Worlds team regardless her performance at Rusnats. Because she is the best scoring russian lady this season, by far. She has medals to back her up even if she bombs nationals.

Buianova in a recent interview said URs are a minor thing and judges are nitpicking too much. I see the logic.
