Nathan Chen

Nathan's introduction at IdF gala: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOOmbnjd8b0

'Le champion du monde en titre, médaillé de bronze aux Jeux Olympiques en Gangneung, et vainqueur de la dernière finale de grand prix ISU, il a médaillé d'argent il y a deux ans à Marseille, il a terminé troisième en programme court vendredi, il a repris la première place de la competition hier, il représente Les États-Unis d'Amérique, il va arriver en quelques instants sur la glace, vous pouvez applaudir Mesdames et Messieurs - Nathan Chen!'

The reigning world champion, bronze medalist at the Olympic Games in Gangneung, and winner of the last ISU grand prix final, he won silver medal two years ago in Marseille, he finished third in the short program on Friday, he took first place in the competition yesterday, he represents The United States of America, he will arrive in a few moments on the ice, you can applaud ladies and gentlemen - Nathan Chen!

Not sure if I heard everything the announcer said correctly - haven't studied French since middle school. Those interviews with Sam Chouinard were a bit challenging to try to understand :p

That's a clip from practice it seems... and he does a 4F... interesting he chose not to do one during the actual performance...
Of course I also wonder why he still focuses on 4F instead of 4Lz, to prevent edge calls on his flip (which cost him a lot of GOE points)... is his 4Lz really this unreliable currently...? :(
(hopefully there's not an injury making 4Lz difficult for him)

That's a slow-mo video from the performance. That's a 3F. Nathan never does any quads but a 4T in exhibitions and shows. I'm liking the 3A additions.

What I think will happen is because he's playing it safe for right now, his SP will be:

3A
4F+3T
4T

Eventually that 4T will be a 4Lz once the 4F is consistent.

Nooo, no 4F in the short program until he can have time to work on it over the break so he’s not getting calls on it. He doesn’t have the time to do that right now. He can do it in the LP but just do two 4T in the short and give yourself a good lead. Maybe he’s using it as practice to see if they still call his 4F or he’s improved on it though for later competitions /shrugs

I think there’s been recent videos of his 4Lz & it looked fine. But I don’t think he’s gonna bother with it until next half of the season. Not like he really needs it right now, maybe doesn’t want to peak too soon.

4Lz contains a lot of potentials to get injury. I think thats why he choose 4F in SP. He still contains 4Lz in FS, and he did great in SA practice and also in IDF practice.

Repeating 4T is not allowed. Therefore he has to do either 4Lz or 4F in addition to 4T.

It's really impressive that Nathan did 3A in the show because he wouldn't have had a 6 min warmup.

It’s not? I thought they were allowed to repeat one quad? Is that only in the LP?

Booo, I didn’t know that lol. Well alright, maybe he’ll try the 4S but he probably wants more practice on the 4F. His 4Lz is good but if he goes for 4 quads in the LP he might save it for that. I guess his current SP layout is the safest but not looking forward to him getting edge calls

He did 2-3 mins warmup all by himself and went straight to caravan. Sorry still having dinner outside...

His 4S is his most inconsistent jump. His toe jumps are all more consistent. The way the choreography is, he needs to do a flip. Even if he gets a !, he'll still get the full base value, he'll just have a lower GoE. Which was still pretty good in IdF.
