Nathan Chen

His 4S is his most inconsistent jump. His toe jumps are all more consistent. The way the choreography is, he needs to do a flip. Even if he gets a !, he'll still get the full base value, he'll just have a lower GoE. Which was still pretty good in IdF.

But look at his GOE on the 4T in France... just imagine, he could get up to 2 more points for a well-landed 4F, if not for the ! call. Two more points on one element are a lot, when it boils down to a GOE race, when he's up against the likes of Shoma and other top men.

Agree about his 4S, it's so wonky looking, I have no idea how he's even able to land that thing.

I agree. By with the SP, it's more a strategy of keeping the scores close. If he has a clean FS, it will make up the difference.

There isn't much he can do about hi Flip, since tech controllers have targeted that jump this year. Everyone la getting calls. Better to keep his current strategy. I'm hoping he attempts a for quad FS.

I know, but he’s been practicing the 4S lately so I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried it. Not advising him to but that’s something that’s also in his arsenal to use if he feels like testing it out. Wonder if he’ll bring back the loop at any point this season.

It depends how he feels at nationals. I think he’ll continue to train it this year, but he probably is thinking of the new scoring system and adapting to that.

videos are uploaded in my EON channel, I assume fans in this thread know where to find it

It seems too crazy that, in the midst of finals and GPF, Nathan would drive 40 miles to a local holiday show that has mostly skaters' friends and families in the audience. But I truly believe that's Nathan's way of giving back to the skating community that he grew up in and loves. There were many skaters at different ages and levels in the show and Nathan's presence can be such a wonderful inspiration and motivation to them. I deeply admire how he devotes himself to help the sport grow.

Thank you mamamiia for uploading the the video. It must be a long day for you.

I agree with you that this must be his way to give back to the local community. He has always been trying to grow this sport in his way, which I noticed from interviews and fan meetings since May. He is a truly special skater. Having said that, yes, it still feel kinda crazy for him to drive that far by himself when he has all the exams and a very important competition awaiting him.

It seems that mom is not around him, so I wish he could take good care of himself these few days leading to GPF.

I am curious how do you tell he is kinda of upset about the step out. I could understand the feeling since he cannot finish the combo because of the step out. Did he not look happy after the performance?

No he didn’t look unhappy, actually he left shortly after and I couldn’t see his face. But he looked down and shaked his head a little bit at 2:52, so I just guessed :p

Wow, Mamamiia, once again such great quality on your videos! If Nathan saw those, he'd immediately hire you as his camera operator, to have high quality videos to send to Raf for jump analysis.

Maybe he was in the area anyway, for training at champions rink, and just 'dropped by' so to speak.

I was looking at protocols of IdF. There were not that edge calls as in SkAm. Nathan is the only one got unclear edge calls for his flips, with Kevin and someone got wrong edge call. Actually there were not that many skaters doing flips anyway, especially for sp. I also checked the SkAm and IdF protocols of Brezina and Romain, Romain got one in SkAm, but not in France, Brezina is one of the very few who never gets the ! call this season. So I am kinda concerned he keeps so many flips in sp and lp.

heyheyhey, for last season’s prize money, he should have 4000 for the US international Classics, and 10,000 from JO. He went to 4CC the previous season, not 17-18 season.

ETA:Nathan with kids from today, lots of kids in the 2nd picture lol

He just got one for free today:o:

That’s quite possible. He can finish his last free style session at 11:30, have lunch, spend some time on instagram+study for an hour, drive 20 mins to XL center and skate....

Wondering why Nathan is getting edge calls on his flip this season? Is this another rule change thing, or is he being targeted?

Thought Nathan is known to have very clean technique on F and Lz. Even KK made a video that features his perfect 4F, though the jump used was from worlds 2017.

Ehh, I don’t know about targeted. Ic3Rabbit agreed with the IDF call and she’s a trained eye, if it was unclear to her than it was probably unclear to the panel. Skate America seemed like everyone was getting called. He can work on it in more detail during his winter break but for GPF, what matters most is that he lands all his jumps even if he gets calls and gets all his levels (!!!).

I don’t know if it is the rules have been tightened this season, nerve issues, or it is becasuse Nathan is away from Raf and didn’t get enough supervision from Raf. Like I mentioned, Romain got it in SkAm, but didn’t get it in IdF. In Romain‘s case, It might be the unfortunate angle the tp is viewing from different competition, or Raf had been working with him to fix the problem. Same case with Vincent, he also got ! Calls in SkAm, but not in NHK and Tallinn.

I remember Raf said something in a recent interview about Nathan’s teletraining is that his mistake should be corrected promptly. This is something I have been worried about him training mostly by himself. If something not get corrected in time, it will be hard to fix when developed into habits. Hopefully they would address this issue during winter break. Going forward, I really wish Raf would be able to visit Yale for a few days once a month or in 2 months, or they would have better skype sessions so Raf would be tracking Nathan more instead of just Nathan contacting him when he is encountering problems, as what they talked about in SkAm.

Nathan needs someone like mamaiia to take quality videos to send to Raf, not what he said some videos luckily captured by his phone sitting on the board. Maybe he has someone, he just doesn’t feel like revealing lots of details.

In case not everyone in this ff aware that there is new webcast by Tony Wheeler, here is the one about IdF. sheetz posted the one about SkAm several weeks ago. Nathan part starts at the 7:33 mark

Iirc, Nathan won GPF last year by 0.5 points with Shoma suffered 1 point deduction for time violation in sp. Nathan made several costly mistakes with his quads. It is going to be a hard battle this year.
