Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

Well, firstly the bpm range for the set pattern is between 110-114. All of these tangoes use a different pieces of music; and some of them use a different tango rhythm. Playing the music from one across the other three and then telling people to compare is BS. If you want to compare, you should use the performances with music at the bpm actually used and also the same rhythm too.

That said, G/P are pretty much faultless.

Thanks! That makes sense. Looks like the person who made the video used Grishuk’s and Platov’s music here.

Do you know which sections are the key points/want to know which sections are the keypoints?

That would be wonderful to know, if that won’t be a bother! Thank you in advance! I’ve never understood the patterns, key points, and what are expected of them. Knowing where they are in the performance at least is a beginning for sure. TV commentators never really talk about them in detail. I don’t know why P/C got a level one on one of the patterns.

A really simplified answer would be that you have to be on a prescribed edge at a prescribed beat (or beats). In compulsory dance every step was scrutinized, but under the current system, a few key points in the pattern are singled out for scrutiny, thus making it somewhat easier for skaters. Keypoints for every type of dance pattern are specified in ISU's published manuals.

Ok, there are two set patterns being performed- TR1 and TR2

Times are approximate for this video: https://youtu.be/HRoJ79NbOOA

TR1

The first key point is the lady as she goes through that bit where having just passed the centre of rink by the judges, she does a twizzle (the man does not do a twizzle). The key point consists of the step before, and then step afterwards which both skaters hold for a beat of four. 1:33- 1.36
The second key point is the man through the same part of the pattern (he doesn't have to do a twizzle) 1:33- 1:36
Third key point is the lady as she skates from the near right corner of the rink to the far right corner of the rink- syncopated footwork, in the middle of which there is a rocker, and then two more steps. 1:42- 1:48. Rocker at 1:45
Fourth key point is the man as he skates from the near right corner of the rink to the far right corner of the rink- syncopated footwork, in the middle of which there is a rocker, and then a few more steps. 1:42- 1:48. Rocker at 1:45

TR2

The first key point is both the lady and the man. See that bit where she steps over his leg and it's then held. It's that and the next two steps 1:52- 1:55
The second key point is the lady only. Its the step that glides over the centre of the rink, and then the two steps that are each held for four beats (for the man). 1:57- 2:01
The third key point is the man only. It's the step that glides over the centre of the rink, and then the two steps that are each held for four beats. 1:57- 2:01
The fourth key point is both the lady and the man. Its the bit where couples are at their most extended and hold an edge for 4 beats, as they cross the far left centre axis of the rink. It's then the next step as well, which ends with the lady twizzling. 2:08-2:12

That's my kind of recognise what' going on without really having to know the technical stuff guide.

But if you want the verbatim ISU version- it's page 61 of this document.

Thank you so much for taking the time to point these out! I really appreciate it. I am at the very moment watching the Grand Prix finals rhythm dance online and am seeing it in a new light with your descriptions in mind. Fascinating! I used to not watch ice dance at all till P/C came into the scene and am now very intrigued by ice dance (and seeing less of the other disciplines!). :-)

And this video!: 7.46 shows the diagram and they have highlighted the sections.

(I've changed some of the timings for the last post to make it more in line this reading: as I am just learning as I am going along too!)

It's the same for me, although I have to admit I'm just about ready to give up on the pattern this season... I tried to see things in real time last night and got many calls wrong... It stings especially since I felt I had the pattern down pat last season :sarcasm:

Evie and J J have done us all a service. Really, Halina and Hilary should have done a video on this. They were great presenting the rules for the new GOE system; so why not? There's a Skating Lesson video promised on the subject, but, y' know......

I felt good on the Rhumba pattern by the end of the season too. I'd be good for when it comes around again, only the next time Latin is used for RD I hope the set pattern is FINALLY T and D's rhumba d'amour.

French Nationals this week, and apparently at least parts will be broadcast on French TV, so some videos should make it out into the wilds of the internet eventually - let's hope the camerawork is as good as at IdeF...and that we get both the RD and the FD!

Did you all see Romain Ponsart with Nathan Chen watching Gabi and Guillaume dance at Grenoble? Fan club like us?

Yes I noticed that too as well as Lambiel and I believe Tracy Wilson during the practice. I'll be a male skater, I would be glued watching him to understand how he moves so freely.
Here is a very complimentary interview with Oleg Epstein https://rsport.ria.ru/20181207/1547573117.html the translation from Google is quite approximative but we get the gist of it. I love how the interviewer is throwing shade at P/C suggesting it's incomprehensible how skating the same program for 4 years they keep being so ahead and desperately trying to find out if anyone can finally take them on :laugh2: But Epstein is having none of it.

ETA: btw has anyone read the International Skating Magazine December issue with P/C on the cover ?

I like that piece of info where he said he's heard from many judges that when they watch P/C skate they sometimes forget they need to give marks. Gabby and Guillaume's power! Schbilband on the other hand, seems to keep implying what they do is easy and his brand of "complexity" is better lol.

Do you remember who came to watch their practice in helsinki ? he only came for gabby and guillame , he left right after.

Who? I didn't see anyone notable in the audience. But this is one of the best practice videos of them we have.

Nope, it was during the FD... they are easy to spot behind the boards.

Who was it?

Thank you, Yuna13 ... ! I probably would have missed him without your hint! I think that they have much in common. It is great to see the appreciation of other skaters :luv17:
Maybe we'll have a Pap/Ciz inspired FS from Yuzuru Hanyu one day ...:hap93:
