2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

For whatever it's worth she would have done a lot better this season than she did. Hope the 18 month plan works. It has to because 3 great Russian junior girls will be senior next season making for tougher competition for all ladies.

You don‘t know that she would have done better so please stop just assuming things and presenting them as facts.

In my opinion, she would have had problems even if she had stayed with Eteri this season. I think there were signs of her technique deteriorating already last year and combined with her lasting injuries, Eteri‘s training method would have made things only worse. Is this a fact? No. It‘s just what I think. The above is what you think.

And can anyone explain to me why people alwqys assume staying with Eteri will all of a sudden solve all problems? She‘s a good coach but she‘s not a magician. It certainly didn‘t help Yulia when she stayed with Eteri after the Olympics.

Honestly, once you reach a point where you feel like you can‘t work in an environment anymore - for whatever reasons - it is probably the only decision to leave and make a fresh start somewhere else. Otherwise it will be a huge burden mentally and it will always drag you down. Even if you somehow manage to continue working, you will never be happy. And how could you work properly let alone compete, when you feel like you don’t belong with your team, the people around you anymore? This is not only Zhenya‘s case, it‘s like this for everyone. Staying when you feel like you need to leave is not healthy.

Zhenya‘s made a choice. Whether she would have done better with Eteri or not is irrelevant. I‘m sure we all have our opinions on that matter. But I think it would do everyone good if we presented them as what they are: Opinions. Nothing else. Not facts, nothing that‘s proven.

I think Zhenya would have faced problems too, had she stayed with Eteri. You think the opposite. That‘s okay.

Super FS by Elizaveta Kulikova in today's event in Moscow. A sort of nascent Kostornaya to my mind. A clean programme with 4 triples and 2 x 2A. She is 10 y.o.

Could someone in the know please tell me why Marya Artemova's final spin was annulled. Nice skate by her too.

I didn't see the CSKA bonus for Gubanova this season either. Not sure if her change paid off :(

The team and GP spot announcement next season will disappoint me for so many amazing skaters regardless of who gets chosen...

We saw a bit of that at some Cup of Russia stage, i guess we'll see that next season with the GP spots.

I didn't know there were such rumours neither but I could guess that they come from the concern that Zhenya has been training for almost a month at the facilities of CSKA.

I don't think that's because she is changing coach but maybe problems getting visa for Canada or other reasons.

But watchout cause i feel that was one of the reasons why it didn't work for Elizabet Tursynbaeva with Orser, too much training on your own which is weird for any skater and especially weird for eastern skaters that are used to have their coaches with them all the time.

If that is going to become the norm, i'd suggest Evgenia to bring TAT and Orser together, have some discussion on what's her work schedule, and list Tarasova as second coach.

Poor Zagi. I hope she doesn't embarrass herself at worlds and not even get the third place finish she only has a slight chance for.

Can anybody tell me why there is such a fuss about Evgenia staying in Moscow for a while? As long as I know she's a second alternative for Europeans with no chance to go to Minsk so she doesn't need to prepare for the competition (for the first time since 2015/2016 season, by the way). She has to train just to stay in shape, that's all. There are the best facilities in CSKA (as I read in this thread) so why she shouldn't go there if invited?

And some tips why she didn't return to Toronto: 1. Korean Nationals (Brian went with Junhwan; Jan 10-13); 2. Canadian Nationals (TCC skaters went for a camp on Jan 8; Lee, Brian and Tracy are present at the competition now); 3. US Nationals and Europeans next week, what means intensive training for Jason and especially Javi (and absence of both Brian and Tracy during the competitions). So Zhenya could go to Toronto and train in almost empty club or take the chance for a nice time with family and friends in Moscow. I quite understand her choice. (However, if she had returned to Toronto, she would have trained with Yuzuru exclusively... I can see those rumors afterward .)

Viktoriia Safonova came out on top today (SP4, FS1). Well done to her!

Alyona put in an excellent SP yesterday to lead by some margin, but had to pull out of the FS, ill. Wishing her fit and ready for JNats.

Maya was second (and in both SP and FS). Anna Frolova third (and 3, 3).

Superb assured SP and FS skates by Sofya rewarded her with first place. Her score 193-plus. :clapper:

Anastasiya Golubeva second (very nice FS) and Polina Popova third.

It's okay now (even though RusFed said two reserves might have a chance for Worlds) I'm personally worried this could be a trend going forward and that wouldn't be a great idea in my opinion.

I guess we will never know about alot of things with Zhenya. I hope she is happy. Her shaky results this year shocked a lot of people and got a lot of people asking questions. Next season will be big for her especially 3 great Russian juniors will become seniors.

I know from your writings you are not very fond of Eteri but she is more than good coach. Be fair to Eteri no one leaves her and gets better. In fact they get worse. No coach has ever had the run of talent over a few years from Yulia to Zhenya to Alina to Sasha to Alena to Anna than Eteri has. to be fair its not just Eteri. Sergei Danil and other deserve credit too. They are a great team.

Hoping for Alina to nail Euros after rusnats problrms.

it doesn't really matter if eteri or brian is the better coach. if zhenya feels uncomfortable staying with eteri then she should leave, even if she would have gotten better results by staying. i think most people would prefer to have an average career but be happy vs. being miserable with a great career. even people who pick the latter seem to regret choosing that life when they get older.

if zhenya stayed she'd be reminded of the olympics everyday, at least with brian maybe she'll be able to forget about it once in a while. Even if she has more problems with brian she'll still be worrying about new things instead of fixating on losing the olympics.

Alina is Russian #1 by a Russian country mile! Any talk about no worlds for Alina is insane! Lol!
Well she could potentially bomb at euros. Which i dont hope but look back to last season's world's she bombed her fs and was what 5th place in the end? Do I hope she has two clean skates at euros yes. Is it possible for her to bomb ? Yes but tis also possible she goes clean. Same goes for worlds

I think next year will be big for every Russian lady, not only Evgenia. How will they handle it when these three turn senior and suddenly sweep the ranks? Russian Nationals was definitely a sign of what‘s to come. And even for those who like to scream about the puberty monster... if it‘ll come, then not next year. Something could still happen, of course, that prevents one of them to dominate alongside the others but what‘s the chance of that? So, yeah, I think next year will be crucial for all of them. It will be interesting to see how Eteri handles it with 4 top senior skaters.

Zhenya will either manage to get it together with her nerves and injuries, or she will not. I was sad by her results in the beginning too but they were to be expected and after thinking this through logically, it would have to be expected anyway, which coach she had chosen in the end. Maybe not as drastic with Eteri this year. I guess her mindset and body could have managed another year of this training method. But after that? I believe she would have been done completely. No one says she won‘t be with Brian either. But at least she made a choice and she is happy. To stay with Eteri would have meant she‘d have to think about the Olympics everyday.

I‘m not fond of Eteri and I have no problem admitting that. That‘s not in relation to Brian in any way, so please don‘t start any comparisons. He has his fair share of problems as well and I‘m aware of that.

“Be fair to Eteri, no one who leaves her gets better.“

Tarakanova begs to differ. I like her skating much more this year and that after loving her programs last year already. She is more refined now, her movements aren‘t as rushed but she still has many transitions so it’s in no way at the cost of that. She explores new styles and while she‘s even more underscored than last year, I think she got better in every possible aspect. She has problems with her consistency in the SP admittedly but she wasn‘t as consistent of a skater under Eteri either.

The others? Well, in my opinion, they left when they were already broken or starting to break. The reason why Tarakanova isn‘t declining is that she was very young when she made the choice. Tsurskaya, Lipnitskaya, Medvedeva? The system started to fail them already, things were already going downhill for them. Yes, for Medvedeva too. Her jumps were muslced and the technique declining. Her spins weaker as well as the steps and skating skills. If you compare her from 2016 onwards, every year things looked more forced. Besides that, she was injured and had to miss the Worlds and half of the off-season, too. So, no, I don‘t think that “everyone who leaves Eteri gets worse“. I see skaters leaving who were already experiencing the system fail them who then went to other coaches with their already existing problems.

If I have to be fair to Eteri: She creates champions. She helps girls fulfill their dreams, she gets them to the World and Olympic medals. She truly excels at that like probably no other coach in recent times.

I‘m not fond of her because I see at what cost this is happening and because I simply don‘t like this factory kind of system. I don‘t like it in any sport. And in my personal opinion I think coaches should support their students even when they‘re struggling and maybe try to adapt their working method for each individual at least a bit. That‘s why in my opinion, she creates champions but I don‘t see her as a great coach. But that‘s just what I think and my definition of “great coach“ is probably very different from yours. That‘s okay, though.

I‘m hoping for Alina to nail Euros too and I‘m fairly confident that she will. She is a strong girl and this title is hers to lose. Maybe that will give her confidence.

Olympic level athletes are not "most people".

You've really brought it to the point with Eteri. Kudos for that, since I couldn't agrre more :)

Olympic level athletes are not "most people".

i doubt olympic athletes are an exception to this. if they were we wouldn't see skaters leave coaches like eteri. most of them don't leave because they don't think she's a great coach, they leave because they weren't happy in that environment anymore.

eteri herself is a great example of how winning medals doesn't mean much if you're not happy. it was pretty telling in that interview with ted when he asked her about her greatest coaching moment. the olympics should've been her greatest and happiest moment as a coach but because her mom was sick during that time she'll never be able to enjoy that memory fully.

Everyone is "most people" when asked "Do you want to be happy and healthy".

Sure, if you ask: "do you want to be happy and healthy rather than unhappy and unhealthy?" On the other hand, if you ask: "do you want to be the best skater in the world if there is the price to pay such as reduced happinness and increased injuries?" the answer will be different depending on whom you ask.
