‘So after Russia, now its Usa.
I dont know what to think about all of this rules...
How can we allowed baby kids competing against real women ?
I really think something should change in our sport, if we wanna build champion who will stay and grow more than 2 season.’

I was sure a champion is usually built by herself and her team and not by national or international federations.

What is that junior camp thing? i guess they hesitate to give Ting spot, because Izzo is junior nats champ? Last season they give 1 spot to Starr who competed in senior nats and Ting who placed 3rd in junior nats, bypassing Pooja who is silver medalist in junior, but she doesnt have JGP assignment so it make sense, they did sent her to Bavarian Open i think so she can have TES min for JWC. The junior champ Alysa is not eligible so no problem bypassing her.

... What's the sum required for retaining two spots, again?
total placement lower than 28 i think? its definitely do-able. Both have good chance to place in top 10, top 7 in lucky day.

This world junior camp is new. Hope to hear more details. IMO, it’s clear that Ting and Hanna should be sent to Junior Worlds. Sending anyone else seems kind a huge mistake.

I don’t understand why people are always so negative. You can’t tell the future. Yes, Alysa may crumble under the pressure, but she’s not even internationally eligible yet so we don’t know. Before Nationals people said she would crumble under the spotlight. She didn’t. And now that the Ladies event is over, people are saying she’ll crumble come next season. Only time will tell.

Before the season began, people were saying that she will not land her 3A’s at all because of her technique. She improved on that. During the season people talked about her lack of artistry, performance skills, and spins. She improved on those in a matter of months. Heck, people were saying that she’ll never land a 3A let alone attempt one because of how horrible her 2A was. Remember when she literally stopped on the ice to jump? Now she’s going into those jumps with improved speed and once she gains even more experience, I’m sure she’ll get the distance, height, and speed you guys are looking for. Plus, I don’t see the over-hype anywhere. The U.S. literally tweeted like three times about her and posted about our National Champion... and I’m pretty sure any federation would post about their National Champion. In fact, they’ve kept her out of the limelight until Nationals. Additionally, have you guys seen the posts on Instagram from other young skaters? What Alysa did our there last night lit a fire within them. Kids are impressionable and seeing a kid their age become National Champion not only made their dreams a little bit more obtainable, but is going to push them technically and artistically.

As for the others, Hanna had inconsistencies before Nationals and she really needed this medal to boost her confidence. Regarding Ting, knowing that she could have placed within the Top 3 had she skated lights out in both programs will only intensify her flame. Remember Rika during her Junior seasons? She botched one program, came out strong in the other, and each competition just fortified her mentally. Nerves got to her so much that she fell during spins and step sequences. Look where she is today. People said she was a headcase, fell under the pressure, and almost wrote her off until she showed the heck up during Nationals and is now going for Gold at 4CC and Worlds as the favorite.

Things change and whether they be for the good or bad, it is entirely up to the skater. The only thing we can do is support. What they are doing out there is not easy and for us to add pressure onto them just makes it worse. Let’s have hope for the future and not always be doom and gloom.

I think it’s obvious that Ting and Hanna be sent to junior worlds. 4th and 5th in senior ladies and Gabriella doesn’t have a 3-3(ok she’s tried it once in the sp at nats, would have been more convincing had she landed it again in the long). I am not sure why they don’t just name them to the team. As far as Alysa goes, we just have to watch and see. Nobody knows what the future holds but last night it was difficult to crown anyone else the champ. Had Mariah landed that dang tripe lutz, or had Bradie landed that dang triple lutz and added her combo.... but they didn’t and Alysa was too clean. Who knows what she will do on the junior Grand Prix or eventually on the senior stage. I hope she figures it out and can continue improving. I see her improving. She’s a charming performer and I saw her improvement in that area more so in the short. She’s actively working on SS, she has said it many times. Like everyone, I’m nervous about the technique on the jumps. But I’m cheering for her. I hope she can figure it out.

Fun fact-

I am sitting in the ihop at my hotel and alysa, her coach laura, and her dad are 2 tables down from me

I really enjoyed the US ladies event this weekend. Certainly loads of talent there, filled with the possibility of future stars. Congrats to the competitors and I look forward to seeing some at 4CC's and both Jr. and Sr. Worlds.

12 and very doable. I can see Bradie and Mariah beating two Russians, all three Canadians, holding off any Chinese, Korean or other Euro challenger -Lindfors, pagianai et al. Mariah seems to be building confidence and really has the more marketable full package and Bradie will always be a fighter and is strong consistently.

Far too soon to be saying these young girls in Russia and USA will flame out in 2 years. We have never had girls at 12-14 doing quads and 3 axels before, nobody has any idea how that will last.

People said the same thing about Nathan when he was 14 and doing quads - said he was going to ruin his body. He continues to dominate the sport.

Agree with this!

If Alysa had been skating in Kwan's era could she have gone to worlds? I can't remember but I thought Michelle competed super young as it was allowed. I think genetically Alsa is in far better position than the Russian girls to hold on her jump and get even stronger - more amplitude. She also will develop artistically too. I am quite disappoiinted in Starr. I don't think she has developed as fast or as well as many of us once thought.

Or is it 13? Now I am confused. It is actually I believe 13 total placements.

Pre 1996 yes
1997 I believe the rule changed but they allowed Tara to be "grandfathered" in because she competed at 96 worlds. But I think that's when the medal at junior worlds became a requirement (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
1997(?)-2000 she would need to medal at junior worlds (that's what killed Sasha)
Post 2000 no

13 is for three spots. It's doable enough, Canada won't have a particularly strong team this season.

Main competitors would be: Russia (3), Japan (3), Korea (1). So they can at the very least gun for 8th and 9th. But that won't guarantee the spots. Hence my question about how many needed for two.

I worry about Starr. She always seems to look quite winded after the short and I'm praying she hasn't inherited any of the vascular or cardiac problems her mother has. Not sure if it's a genetic thing or not.

I like this junior team camp idea. Hanna and Ting are the clear frontrunners and will most likely go, but I do think young athletes can benefit by being surrounded by peers who are at your level or a little above. As long as the camp is managed right they'll hopefully learn from each other and motivate each other. Plus, if Bradie or Mariah gets injured, Ting will probably skip junior Worlds and that will leave a spot.

I think Amber should be the 3rd alternate for Worlds, and 2nd for 4CC. You can make the argument that Starr has greater long-term potential, but to be completely honest I just don't think this is her season. She may benefit more just from taking a break and starting to prep for next season.
