The Great Battle of Nizhny Novgorod begins! (soon).![]()
Welll, just think about it - Russian field is so deep that even the selection for the 3rd spot on national team is an international drama and a spectacle of itself now. This local small competition in small provincial town of Russia is getting more international attention than ever. This is big for probably both - for Nizhny Novgorod and for Cup of Russia. This tournament was mostly meaningless before, you know, it was not even the team-C caliber meet, because AFAIK team-A'ers and team-B'ers mostly did not bother to show up there before. And now they have 1 Olympic medalist, 2 World-champions (Liza and Zhenya) and all 3 GP-medalists competing there. And the fight is gonna be no joke.![]()
Somebody make a drama-bottom for GS here. 'Cauz we need one.

I assume the federation is keeping allllllllll of their options open. Including booting Sofia or Alina from the team if they feel so inclined (though neither lady should be booted, period).
I agree that Liza deserves the spot based on her fall season, but if she hasn't proven that she has regained form or momentum after her illness, it's understandable why the federation would want to send Zhenya or Stasya instead.
I think it's possible that Sofia or even Alina's spot will be in trouble if both Zhenya and Liza skate like World medal contenders. Or Stasya. She has a lower international score ceiling than Zhenya/Liza, but the fed likes her.
(IMO, Sofia, Alina, and whoever wins Russian Cup Final should be the team. But since Sofia and Alina haven't been named to the team, I don't think their spots are totally safe.)
Has anyone thought about the scenario all three worlds spot contenders perform extraordinaly well (not very likely, tho) or at least Zhenya and Liza? Do you think there's still a possibility that both girls will be chosen over Sonya? Sonya has proven shes rock solid, but I have a feeling Liza's 3A and Med's reputation are worth more (to some people, not including me) than Sofia's reliable skating.
Also Im a bit worried for Alina on WC because of ghost memories from Milano. I hope she lets go of that skate and medals, since WC medal is the only one missing on her shelf.
I just wish for the girls competing at RCF to all do well.
If Sofia's only claim this season was that she's been the most rock solid of the senior Russian ladies, I would say it's possible, but given that she won European's and is the only reliable Russian senior lady of the ones really talked about in consideration for Worlds, I doubt they kick her off for Liza who's recovering from an illness that kills people and Evgenia whose been performing lackluster and mistake filled this year. Of your scenario, that Liza and Evgenia both skate extremely well and the Fed wants to kick off someone else besides just Staysa for the Worlds team then it should be Alina that's taken off Worlds team - last season she got stronger as the season went on, it's been the opposite this year her performances have gotten worse. It would be horrible if next season they have the 3 super strong incoming juniors and their current crop of ladies fighting over 2 spots. I think they should go with the Sofia/Alina and then let the other 3 girls know that the highest place finisher at RCF is #3 on the Worlds team.
Good point. I 100% agree with you. With the problems she has been having with the short, I am glad she is going first. She went last at Nationals and IdF and it was not good. Maybe these things make a difference, maybe not.
Definitely agree. They'd have requested Alina and Sofia to skate Dragon or RCF if their spots were not set in stone. I do not believe Zhenya skated 2 clean programs at the same competition all year, sadly. She'd have to win by a significant amount to question Liza's spot IMO.I don't think it is that simple. I think if Evgenia beats Liza somehow just by a bit Liza still would be the better choice. I think Russia has to use Sofia to guarantee a top six placement and then assume or hope Alina willbe in top 7 or Liza / Evgenia or whoever also places in top 7. All 3 ladies should potentially have the chance to medal but worst scenario is like last year.
Good point. I 100% agree with you.

I think the Federation have indicated that whoever the winner of RCF is is going to Worlds
