2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

If you want to analyse the motion of a skater in the air, you have to decompose their motion into three parts: translational motion of the centre of mass horizontally and vertically, and rotation about the rotation axis (I'm assuming the rotation axis itself isn't changing, otherwise we have more pressing concerns to deal with).

For jumps, the horizontal translational motion doesn't actually affect the force upon landing that much, because the ice is slippery, so a decent landing will lose little speed. Thus, we only need to consider the other two. Quads necessarily rotate faster, and to be able to stick a landing, you have to kill the rotational speed instantly, so faster rotation means more force on the legs is needed. The vertical velocity depends on the height; if you jump higher (and not all quads are higher than the corresponding triples), then of course you'll hit the ground harder. However, the difference in height between a quad and a triple usually isn't that great, whereas the rotational velocity increases dramatically.

So, overall, yes, quads will hurt more than triples, but this is mostly due to increased rotation and not increased height.

Which quad isn't higher than its corresponding triple? Not sure what you're saying here. Do you mean that some people execute quads that are lower than the best executions of its corresponding triple?

Also, jumping higher would actually give more time to complete rotation in the air, and therefore break out in a manner that resolves the landing with lower torque being exerted on the landing foot. There are multiple reasons why I find this "they don't NEED to jump higher when they rotate that fast" reverse-reasoning to be some of the stupidest stuff being spoken into existence, especially when it comes to quads.

Gubanova wuzrobbed.

I am an Evgenia stan, but I stand by the above sentiment. Quality jumps, spins, program, skating - Gubanova had it all.

The LP is going to be a bloodbath.

No surprise. Nastya always gets the shaft. Especially in Russia. it's really odd because she skates beautifully is beautiful and feels the music. Maybe the Russian Federation is trying to get her to skate for another country. Whether it's Nastya or not we will see this in the near future where some of the Russian girls leave and skate for another country the way a little ET did with Kazakstan. I think the Kazaks need good number 2. ;)

If only Anna Tarusina didn't have such a deep flutz... She is great and consistent as always. But with the low jumps + a flutz you really can't overlook her scoring potential is heavily limited...

Thank you again @tempo for the live links! For some reason the streaming has been of excellent quality today in the US.

Tarusina's flutz is obvious but you don't think her height and projection on all her jumps will improve as she grows stronger? I really think she may be one of the exceptions of the puberty diminishment rule and it may actually really help her. She literally just turned 16 and looks like she has otherwise great technique and knee bend.

And as for the flutz in general, honestly doesn't like 80% of female skaters have a flutz? I've rewatched lots of late 90's and 2000's programs and they all had the same edge issues we see today and did versions of the flutz from Witt and Bonaly to 3 of my all time favorites, Kwan, Queen Butros, and Alina.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but one has to naturally be gifted with the type of hips like a Kostner or Tarakanova. It was described to me from someone I respect greatly in the FS world who is a fellow doctor plus an ortho that if a female is gifted with traditional 'birthing hips' doing the lutz correctly is basically impossible. In attempting to do so its painful, can immediately tear the hip's acetabular labrum tendon, immediately and continuously inflame the superior acetabulum (outer joint space around the synovial, or ball and socket, hip joint) and will increase the, already likely from the sport in general, major hip issues early in life.

She told me it's hands down the most common reason for retirement and is one of the original arguments behind the allegation that those of Asian decent have an advantage since they are genetically predisposed to being naturally gifted with narrow hips and butt. Though it is argued the same gift also gives those of Asian decent an equal if not worse disadvantage because of the lack of or ability to significantly strengthen the same superior acetabulum and synovial hip support and butt muscle. That muscle and joint (obviously along with other joints and muscles throughout the entire body) is particularly imperative for height, power, extension, and control of starting axis of all jumps.

Those skaters of Asian decent also have a significantly higher chance of early hip osteoarthritis, displacement, and degenerative hip disease because obviously skating itself is the constant motion of pushing down and off on edges on skates over and over. Having a inverted pelvic bone leads to an increase of mass of the labrum but a smaller acetabulum synovial cavity surrounding and protecting the articular joint, which leads to a smaller scale articular joint capsule (the entire area that encompasses that part of your body) which leads to less periosteum membrane (tough outer layer) to protect the synovial fluid between the joined bones (the fluffer) and surrounding bones' articulating surfaces. So with mother nature's reduced protection and constant use from the basic skating motion the likely hood of Asian skaters facing a breakdown of the capsule causing bone on bone results can be greater than those of their European and North American counterparts.

Since doc explained the flutz issue, like 10 years ago; my disgust of the flutz has diminished greatly LOL, as long as they all are being judged equally on it.

Hope that wasn't TMI.

Not only that - her 3T was under too. And they definitely were rewatching it in slo-mo repeats - so it was impossible to not notice it (atleast 3Lo UR).Talking about judges favoritism ) On other hand the panel there was very lenient overall - Vasilieva's and Tarusina's wrong edges weren't called as well, so..
I also saw at least two underrotations (loop and Toeloop). I don't understand why RusFed does that - do they actually think that international judges would turn a blind eye as well?

Stanislava was grossly overscored. I think they well send her to Worlds. Russian judges and RusFed just love her and overlook all the mistakes and flaws.

I was looking closely at Stanislava's jumps too. But I think they were just inside. Doesn't the rules say that you need to be "less than a quarter turn" inside before you call it an UR?

From the above comments, it sounds like the Russian fed still doesn't support Gubanova. I really wish I could have a peek inside the judge's heads: what is it they see in their favourites that isn't there in Gubanova?

Found this in Anastastiia’s fan thread

https://youtu.be/3R3kIAD63XE

It’s an ice level HD video of her SP today (I had a different angle on my stream from a greater distance) but what I liked about this angle is that it really captures her facial expressions and gives an interesting and close look at the detail of her interpretation. She looks so calm and cool as if she was really enjoying herself today. Maybe even a bit of ego mixed in too right after she lands her jumps

Good for her...her jumps are a bit tilted at take off but she lands exceptionally smooth on a very nice running edge.

Whether you like this program or her or not doesn’t matter. This angle is very interesting from an analytical point of view. I think it’s really close to or just at the side of the judges point of view.

I think it's about "star quality". They have decided that Medvedeva is a star and give her the extra PCS accordingly.

Tuktamysheva does not deserve her PCS.

Not today no. Interestingly she had a higher PCS than Konstantinova. It seems that the judges have decided that this fight will be between Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva and they are doing everything to keep those two in front...

Wow, what a level of competition. I‘ve just watched it all. That was awesome.

I’m beyond thrilled for Zhenya, of course. Whatever happens tomorrow, it was great to see the SP finally clean. She seemed so happy too. Well deserved first place! Her jumps looked a bit better in practice and it’s clear that it’s still a work in process but this was a major improvement.

Stasya... no surprises there, she’s always at 100% in National events. I really like her, though, I think she has great skating skills and personality on the ice. I wish she was more consistent outside of Russia because right now I’m always afraid when she gets sent to international competitions.

Gubanova: She is a quality skater! Wonderful spins and skating skills. That step sequence is divine. Her airposition scares me a bit, though. Happy for her making the top three, really deserved.

Liza: Well, the 3A didn’t work out but she‘s still more than in the running. She‘s still the lutz queen and if she lands the 3A tomorrow, I can definitely see her win this. Nothing’s decided yet.

Also happy for Sima, even though there was a small mistake on the combo. I love seeing her and Zhenya at the same competition, it‘s like in the old times. Overall, it was a great SP with an amazing level. Well done, ladies!

Tomorrow will be another day, though. Zhenya, Stasya and Liza all have a chance to make it, it will depend on who‘s best tomorrow. I wish all of them good luck even though I’m of course primarily rooting for Zhenya. But all in all, whatever happens will happen. I’m happy for her SP and just hope she can have an equally great FS tomorrow. :)
