2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

It would be funny if after everything in the end Konstantinova did end up on the world team. After all she's pretty much the reason all of this is happening. If she had stood on the Euros podium, even if only a Bronze, she would have secured her spot. Liza, despite the great GP season, unfortunately to got sick at the wrong moment would have to simply accept being unlucky and Evgenia, who hasn't had a clean competition all season, would be home and preparing for the next season. Instead not getting a medal there opened the door. It would be a shame if neither Liza or Evgenia couldn't take advantage of the opportunity.

Its a pitty, but im starting to see this as the best option... Lets just wait for tomorrow and root for Stasa as much as for the other girls. She must have deserved her spot somehow so lets trust rusfed a bit.

But by having this "skate-off", RusFed has also proven that they really really wan't Medvedeva or Tuktamysheva to go to Worlds. RusFed wouldn't have done this if Konstantinova hadn't bombed last year. They are usually very consistent in following the Russian Nationals results.

But if they haven't forgiven her (and her marks at nationals and here don't really say that at all) why is she still in the conversation for the third spot? Why then hasn't her failure to get a medal at Euros take her out of the running :scratch2:

If you discount all the other ladies (which it seems the Russian fed. is doing) then it probably, depending on how you feel, should be between Liza (trying to prove that she's getting better after unfortunately getting sick) and Evgenia (probably shouldn't even be considered after this season but is because of her reputation) alone to decide the third spot. But instead if anything it seems like Stanislava getting yet another chance to prove herself when she technically already had one and failed.

I think in the end the "skate-off" is happening because Russia didn't sweep the Euros podium not because they really want someone else who didn't go to Euros.

I want to see Zhenya go to worlds. It was wonderful to see her fan base today, and see the love people have for her. In my opinion is she the best in this group? Not even close. I would have had her 5th or 6th. But I would like to see her and Alina compete at Worlds, because I suspect it will be the last year for both of them. I think Zhenya has enough of an international boost to come in high enough to save the third spot. Liza can take the year to get back in shape, and with a 3A she will still be competitive next year.

Well, I totally agree with you. As I said, they really really want Medvedeva/Tuktamysheva to go to worlds. They are both previous world champions and have international fame. The problem is that they have rules when it comes to Russian Nationals/European Championships. The first two go to Europeans and the 3rd is decided by RusFed. This year Konstantinova was the senior "champion" so they had to send her to Euros. It's a lot about saving face here for RusFed I think. Usually they send the same team to Worlds but this year it's a different story. Almost losing the 3rd spot last year made them nervous. And a lot of that has to do with Konstantinova. So they are doing everything they can to NOT send her again, though she is the national senior "champion". It was interesting today that Tuktamysheva beat Konstantinova on PCS, which is a little bit odd as Konstantinova had a great skate, Tuktamysheva missed her 3A and had a fall. Come tomorrow, I think it will be between Med/Tuk for the 3rd worlds spot, that is what RusFed have already decided....I didn't think this before, but I do now after todays events.

Worst case scenario

What if all three of Med/Tuk/Kon totally bombs tomorrow (even with heldup PCS) and end up in scores around 180. And then comes Gubanova/Guliakova/Tarusina and sweeps the podium.
What happens then?
I don't think it will matter, one of the Big3 will go to Worlds anyway...or??:scratch2:....or??:scratch2:

From everything I have heard, word on the street is that winner goes. No matter what.

I am beyond nervous. :eeking:

I believe that whoever wins this RusCup Final will go to Worlds, even Gubanova/Guliakova/Tarusina. They are young and need international experience (and SB, Ranking...), then why don't send them to Worlds if they win? The risk of losing 3 spots next year is extremely small, as Zagitova cannot finnish lower than 5th position, and Sofia is super consistent.

Erm.. why it's worst case exactly? It's just dream come true :cheer:

Of course not. Even in that case they are still will put the top of the big 3 in the world team. Don't be so naive - RusFed don't care about some noname skaters well-being. All they care about are medals - and new skaters without int reputation aren't going to win even with clean skate due to low PCS and rating. So it's just waste of potential in their eyes.

I just realized how well Gubanova holds her luz edge before her take off. One thing I feel a little jarring about her performance, is that she seems to be over performing and over the top. The right amount of sassiness adds to the program, but too much... I don't know. Her coach gives everyone in her team jazzy sassy programs.

Zagitova could absolutely finish lower than 5th. Especially if she skates like she did at Euros and nationals.

Rika, Satoko, Kaori, Mariah, Bradie, Leona, and Lil Bet all have scores higher than what Zagitova produced at Euros. That doesn’t even include her team mates from Russia.

Eunsoo and Viveca are also on the rise and if clean could pass the 200 mark.

LOL! Yes it's a dream come true. But I think you are right. One of the Big 3 goes to Worlds...no matter what. We mustn't forget - this is a skate-off between certain skaters, it's not Russian Nationals...

Maybe if she wasn’t so underscored for her performances she wouldn’t feel as compelled to over perform ;)

Oh, I meant PCS as in she deserved her scores today. I worded that wrongly, I‘m sorry. I thought the 3Lo was under, so yes, she should have lost points there. But otherwise she did deserve her scores. She‘s had a lot of 3Ts in combo that were clearly more under and weren‘t called. This one was fine, so I‘m okay.

I‘ll be honest: in my opinion sending Stasya to Worlds wouldn‘t be a good idea. Yes, it‘s very likely for her to win tomorrow, she has a great chance. But she never has two clean skates outside of Russia. This year, Sofia is the only one on the team who is rocksolid. They really need to make sure to not lose their spots for next years when they will have even more girls battling it out. Maybe it‘s unfair to her but I just don‘t have a good feeling. I like her a lot and I agree about what you said, in some parts I really see a bit of Zhenya‘s performance quality in her but if pressure manages to get to her all the time... I just wouldn‘t be too happy if she really got to go.

I think you and I are on the same page regarding Evgenia. Even with a 2A< I would still have her first. She was the class of the field on PCS and I want this for her more than anything. I've seen you on her fan fest so I can only assume you feel similarly.

Stanislava was great on pretty much everything other than the 3Lo, and when she's on she deserves the PCS she gets. Despite this I have to agree that sending her to Worlds would be asking for trouble. If not Evgenia I was hoping for Liza to pull it out, or even Anna Tarusina since we know we can count on a solid performance.

Anything can happen tomorrow. I'm freaking out.
