I also think that giving the defending champion an automatic wildcard would be the most elegant solution.

I don’t understand why the argument shifted from Liza vs. Zhenya to Alina vs. Zhenya, because 1. Alina is even more qualified than Liza and 2. this argument shouldn’t exist in the first place because both Liza and Alina would be better suited. Zhenya is doing great and I really hope she maintains the second highest WS in Russia to be invited to WTT, but for worlds, Alina, Sofia, Liza is the best way to go.

I think Fluture was referring to the qualifying rounds that were used at Worlds when there were too many entries (see the tables here with QA, QB, SP, FS). The ISU voted to eliminate them in 2006.

It feels like at think point it could be 49/51, I think Liza has the edge but Med is Med. To see her at Worlds would be amazing.
Ultimately if I was to decide I’d send Liza because I think she’s less likely to have a disaster skate. Med definitely turned a corner at the Final but her record this season isn’t convincing. Liza landing that 3A clean said a lot.

That‘s mostly what people have been discussing the past few pages. Opinions differ, as you can probably see. Some think she should be there, some think she shouldn‘t. Whether or not she‘ll be there is unclear, we‘ll find out, as has been said, on 25th. But considering the fact that neither Tuktamysheva nor Medvedeva are going to Universiade, we don‘t get any clues from there either. We‘ll just have to wait. For now, we can only speculate.
Yes, thank you, that‘s exactly what I meant. I wasn‘t sure when and how they were used since I‘m a more recent skating fan but I remember seeing a program of Slutskaya and the commentator mentioned “qualifying rounds“.

I know we are all excited about who will go. Seems like only Sofia is guaranteed lol. What a choice. I went on youtube and one lady said most likely it is Alina, Sofia and Liza with Evgenia first alternate with a good chance to g o to worlds because Alina has not been fully practising. Whatever is the situation it will be a bit sad one of these four ladies is not going. All good points. Liza had the better overall season. Liza is recovering from pneumonia - this is a positive and negative. Alina has been going down each competition. Evgenia has been slowly gaining strength. UR issues for Alina and Evgenia. Evgenia having issues with edge on the Lutz. Alina recovering fromm whatever.
So much to consider. A skate off now before worlds might just sap more out of them so inthe end it hurts the russian team. I thought Liza might have just won the Russian Cup and Evtgenia would show her problems still but that wasn't the case. Though it wasn't much of a win.

There is no reason to believe the decision isn't down to Liza or Evgenia for the third spot. If Alina isn't at Worlds, it's because she isn't able to go because of injury or some other personal issue.

The Moscow Championships 2019 (qualification for elder age nationals) will be held from the 25-28. Notable participants include: Sofia Akatieva, Elizaveta Berestovskaya, Kamila Valieva, Sofia Samodelkina, Daria Usacheva, Maya Khromykh and Anastasia Shabotova.

What’s the first segment of younger age nationals? I looked at protocols from last year and I was baffled. Kanysheva (the leader) just jumped 2 3Lzs, 1 3Lz+3T and 1 3Lz+3Lo (along with a step sequence and combo spin). And the lutz toe was invalidated? And there were no PCS? And although the TES was 28, the final score was 56!

Even if Alina is not well enough to go to Japan, I just don't think Evgenia is competitive enough to be even top 6 at the Worlds. None of her technical elements (spins, jumps, steps) will receive much GOE even if she is clean. She is at best last year's Sotskova's level. I have never thought any skater reached her level would regress in so many areas. Mao had to rework her jumps but she never lost her intricate step sequences. Yulia was losing her jumps after Sochi but her performance significantly improved after that... Suppose her jumps are being taken care of, her interpretation, performance, spins, flexibility also need a lot of attention, because if she does not go back to her previous levels in these areas, she won't be competitive even if she mastered a luz or 2A-3lo or 4sal, because she will be at most a jumping machine.
Oh, the difficult spot the Russian Federation is facing. I’ll admit the Russian ladies fought hard under considerable pressure and did great. If I were on the selection panel, I think I’d edge in favor of Tuktamysheva. She evidenced she’s in fine form after her illness, she’s had consistently strong season (last I checked she was season’s #2), and it was so close at Russia Cup, with both skaters leaving points on the table (Zenya in the long, Tukt in the short, especially). But, it would be tough because I think Zenya is improving form really nicely with her new technique and could likely peak and win/podium at worlds. Tukt’s closeness to Zenya now, her success on the GP and at the GPF tell me she’s earned a shot. Zenya first alternate without question if I were on the panel as I’m confident she’s peaking now and figuring out her adjustments.
They have Olympic qualifiers. 2018 it was Nebelhorn Trophy for those countries who didn't qualify at the 2017 World's and another chance to meet minimum Olympic Qualification scores for teams. The ISU is just a governing body under the IOC and has to abide by their underling rules or risk being dismantled (though there are small rule differences between them, in the end the IOC is the final word).
I do hate the quota rule in all sports, but understand the absolute need for them. The purpose of the Olympic's mission is to decrease nationalism, educate, and bring the world together through a common interest, sport. So participation from as many countries is obviously the goal, and to do that you need to include as many sports that have universal participation to fit in the 2 weeks of the Olympic Games. Sports are cut and added every cycle.
There is a max total quota of participants to The Games. To increase the quota of spots in FS would mean the elimination of spots or an entire sport to make room for these additional spots. Which may include a country that otherwise would not participate in The Games therefore going against the Olympic movement. And another reason FS fans may not want to push the subject, ISU has one of the smaller numbers of federations at 28 (this includes figure skating, synchronized skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating unions). As opposed to say, the FIG (Gymnastics) who has 143 federations on 6 of the 7 Continents and over the years found increased participation but decreasing per country quota (until very recently) to make room for the globalization.
