Kwan, Slutskaya to follow in Cohen's direction?

Slutskaya and Kwan will be too old by then, atleast too old to miss the time they have missed and make a return. Notice that the only reinstated pros who had success in Lillehammer were in dance and pairs. Well Gordeeva/Grinkov retired very young, they were still only 22 and 26, younger then many of their competitors in the event when they returned. Miskutienok/Dmitriev had won the Olympic Gold only 2 years before Lillehammer, so missed only 1 season, and were not old for the event when they returned either. Torvil/Dean were the only true "old timers" to return and win a medal, that is in ice dancing, a totaly different event then the other 3 events, and particularly then the singles event with the fine tuned jumping elements. In fairness alot of people believed reinstated pros Boitano and Petrenko had good chances of medals(although their exact chances were probably exagerrated by attention hungry media) but back then the pros had a very competitive circuit with a fairly high technical level, triples, even the hardest triples per gender, were in existance in those pro events. The pros have nothing like that now to stay somewhat competitively sharp.

Cohen is young enough to make one final comeback at 24 and 25 years old but she seemed to be struggling with motivation even when she left, and has never been considered one of the hardest workers. She also stopped attempting triple-triples, she used to have a triple lutz-triple toe and even was once trying a quad sal, but abandoned them. She might try a comeback, like some previous posters suggested, but will almost certainly IMO abandon it when she finds the work and commitment required to get to the required technical level to even have a chance. If she were serious about continuing she would probably have not stopped at all, or at latest been coming back in the 2007-08 season, 2008-09 is too late for her to make a return, unless she really buckles down in a way I dont believe she has in her.

Well I was stating an opinion when I begun this thread, and we just dont know what will happen, but best of luck to all 3 in what they decide to do, if they want to skate, skate, we are not going to stop them and any athlete that would return knows that they will have to be in tip top shape to compete.

MAY THIS THREAD NOW END, SEEMS TO BE GETTING OUT OF HAND

I hope by 2010 Michelle is the U.S. ambassador to China, Sasha wins an Oscar and Irina is elected to succeed Pizeev.

I look forward to an Olympic showdown between the old-timers, Mao Asada, Yu-na Kim and Kimmie Meissner, versus the upstarts, Caroline Zhang, Mirai Nagasu and Rachael Flatt. :)

Right on the money!
Except Michelle will have her own clothing/perfume/makeup line, Sasha will only be allowed 'ice related' roles (Hollyweird sure do LOVE their type casting....), which will put her about as far away from any kind of self-congratulatory statuette as Jupiter (but she will still make 100 times the money anybody makes anywhere near an ice rink), and Irina will be caring for her aged parents in a drafty 1/2 bedroom apartment in one of 1,000's of nondescript high rise apartment blocks in Yaroslavl......

Sasha never "had" a triple lutz/triple toe or a quad sal. Her one attempt at a 4S at Skate America 2001 failed and so disrupted her FS that she never tried it again. After many tries at the 3Z3T in the 2002-2003 season, she landed ONE at Worlds 2003, and got so rattled that she fell on her next jump, a triple toe, and then toppled out of a spin. She finished off the podium, and never tried a 3Z3T again.

I don't think they can do it. MK, Irina, and Cohen all have trouble w/ their jumps. Mk only can do a single lutz, Sasha can't never do a clean triple toe loop, Irina keep pop jumps. I guess the 3 are starting to fade.

Kwan is recovering from hip surgery and Slutskaya has a chronic illness and must take medication which causes her weight to balloon. That's why they don't have their jumps. Cohen is able-bodied and I guess her excuse is she hates to train.

I don't think so. I think she has just had enough. Been there, done that. People move on.

Well she had them in practice I should have said then. ;) She was atleast pushing hard to try and master those jumps if nothing else, you are right she never really did though anyway. However I did believe she had landed the triple lutz-triple toe one other time, other then clean triple lutz-triple toe she landed to start her free skate at the 2003 Worlds, but I could be mistaken on that.

I'd personally love to see it just for the multiple internet board meltdowns it would produce from clashing fans:

Kwan v Cohen
Kwan v Slutskaya
Slutskaya v Cohen
Kimmie v Emily
Mao v YuNa
Caroline V Mirai
Mao v Caroline

and onwards unto eternity!!!!!!!!!!

Imagine

Out of the Ladies over 25, who really has a shot at the 2010? I agree age SHOULD NOT matter, and likely does not nearly as much as abilities. I would say Fumie has the best chance at a medal in 2010 for the ladies over 21 now that haven't went on a "sabbatical or the likes of temp. retirement" - and that is not seeming to possible due to Jump content. Sasha seems to me to be using the 2010 possibility only as a back-up. Her heart just doesn't seem to want (but that is SeaniBu speculation only). Ira, I really don't feel like she is going to. blaa blaa.... spec spec speculation....

To directly address what is being said though, age should not matter, don't retire JUST to give the newcomers a shot! If they want your title they need to take it. If you still want to skate and qualify, then skate and compete against 10 years younger in some cases. If you can beat a 16 yearold at 26, you rock in my book!

I had a similar attitude of "let the new little girls have a shot" when I first started posting here, and the members had both POVs. But that is the only one that is truly a "sports" attitude. "If they want it they will have to take it!" That is sports.

I like Suguri but after this season I dont think there is any hope for her even if she continues. Has she announced her plans to continue or retire yet anyway?

Just rumors so far (other than comments a while ago she would still be in it) or recently, and I really agree. But out of the "old guard" I would say she has the best shot, which is not that good really. I hate to say it so I will say no more other than if she does make the 2010, or is there to try to make the Oly team, the gold (or any medal) she will receive will be the one in the hearts of her fans. AS SHE IS NOW! But if she has some miraculous unseen ability to ADD content that she hasn't in the past, the CoP changes...etc...
I would never be able to count her out and wouldn't put it past her to be that one in a million (for she already is in so many aspects) that can get even better after 26.

Yuka got better in some aspects.

I think adding me to her life as a supportive husband would make that happen!:agree: ;) I would gladly be SeaniBu Suguri!

Sean as much as I like Fumie I don't think she will be around for the 2010 games. It is my guess that she has been fighting quite a few injuries the past couple of seasons. I just don't see her being a factor in 2010. Another poster mentioned how Irina, Sasha and Michelle could breathe some life into pro skating I would add Fumie to that list.

i really don't think that we will see any of these ladies again in elegiblile competion... but sasha has the best chance of a comeback. She is resonably injury and illness free and flexible enough to compete with the rubber-band juniors. She won't though... as sad as that is for a fan like me. :(

I have asked in other threads what is the source or basis of statements like this about Sasha and not received much of an answer (I know someone who saw her etc.). I know that leading up to the Olympics Mr Nicks said in an interview that she had trained if anything too relentlessly. Maybe chuckm being so knowledgeable could explain his statement?

Why did it take 4 pages to get to the correct reasons behind Slutskaya and Kwan - One is not well, the other hasn't practiced much since 2002 I have no qualms about them making a comeback but I think it would be just for an 'old trouper saying, I'm Still Here.

Sasha, on the other hand, is still in tack physically, and I assume she is working out 5 days a week????? Who is the coach?????
I think she deserves another crack at it but these new Ladies will be all that more powerful by 2010.

in response to Fossi
huh? Kwan's taking the political approach and Cohen's taking the princess/wannabe actress approach.

I do agree that these youngsters now, will be that much better in 3 years and be a mighty force to reckon with. That is why I say if any of the aforementioned ladies are able to beat them and get to the Olympics ... then good for them ... they will deserve it!
I think the chances are slim for any of them, but until I hear from their own mouths that they're done, I will continue to believe there is still a chance that they will try again.

It ain't over till it's over! :p

Yes, but my point still stands- (recent) history has shown the attempt to step up from Olympic Silver to Olympic Gold pretty futile, at least for the Ladies. In Cohen's case though, you have a point in that she doesn't have a world championship unlike these two. I don't think she wants it badly enough, though- otherwise she'd be right in the mix still. But it's better that she isn't- more new faces, and an extra American- Alyssa Czisny- gets to go to worlds

How often has it happened, anyway? Before skaters could earn while remaining Oly eligible, the only skater that I know of who wanted to step up from silver was Carol Heiss -- and she did win the OGM the next time around. I was thinking that, maybe, the world championship is some kind of "jinx", along the lines of being the men's reigning world champ.

IMO, MK will be in Vancouver -- according to IFS magazine, she is mentoring Caroline Zhang, and, since I think (or at least hope) that NNN/L will make the Oly pairs team, Michelle will also want to cheer on her sister's students.
