2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I don´t know much about the cross country rules, but aren´t there like about 80-100 to start? It´s almost 100 starting in biathlon, and about 4 spots for Norway last OG. So you can´t really use that as an example because there aren´t that many starting in figure skating. I think the rules makes sense when you see the numbers that start. Or do you mean that they should have for example a 4 spots rule and then extend the numbers of starters, and still allow spots for other small countries?

Totally off subject but you should totally start watching Cross Country and Biathlon Skiing LOL. I didn't really get into it until this year (after watching Keegan Randle and Jessie Diggins win Gold last year. And seeing how freaking attractive the guys are (Boe....Hello!). It's like Swedish Curling team x 2. Like right up there with the male 2018 World Russian gymnastics team. hehe) and it's so much more exciting then I ever imagined and a fun easy watch. Especially Biathlon. The guys who do the commentary are fantastic and really knowledgeable, and if you live in the USA its shown on The Olympic Channel and on their app a lot. Just sayin!

Back to Russian LFS...Go The Empress Go!

It's a VK group (similar to Facebook?), though with the name being Russian Figure Skating I can see anyone's confusion. But it's good to see that the folks in that group aren't delusional about their picks for the World team!

Alexandr Gorshkov, chief of RusFed started a poll about national team for Worlds and fan's preferences https://m.vk.com/wall-24972370_254878

answer 1 - Med, Tukt, Samodurova
answer 2 - Med, Tukt, Zagitova
answer 3 - Med, Samodurova, Zagitova
answer 4 - Tukt, Zagitova, Samodurova

Sorry, I think that I read that page inattentively :slink:

So, based on the poll, it seems people think the 1st spot goes to Alina (the choice without Alina got the lowest votes), the 2nd to Liza, the 3rd to Sofia, and the 4th to Zhenya. I'd say I agree with the poll and hope the fed thinks the same way.

I also agree with this poll.

I just really want for Alina to have a strong showing at this worlds cause I'm scared that with the 3A coming up next season, her condition right now and Eteri's way of running her school, she won't be there next year.

I don't know, I'm just still bitter about the way Alina was and is being treated by, well everybody at home? The press, the Russian fandom, TAT and the fed and her own team.
I feel like she didn't get the recognition she deserved for her OGM so I want for her to get it at some point for sth else. Can't help but keep comparing Alina's win to Sotnikova's.
Adelina's coach cried and screamed when she won, you could see how invested she was in her and that she was almost more emotional than Adelina herself. TAT praised her, the media loved her, they literally printed her name on the ice rink at CSKA and plastered the walls with her face. Anybody who saw the video of her backstage reaction when Yuna's scores came up and how everybody hugged her knows what I mean. And what did Alina get? "Sorry, but it's just that we have known Zhenya for a longer time that's why we like her more"-TAT

I don't want her to let those people feel validated.

Even if Evgenia won, you wouldn't ever get a reaction like this out of Eteri. Also, Adelina was the surprise winner (and "saviour", really, after Lipnitskaia had a poor individual event), and it was in Russia so the meaning of that medal was magnified that much more. Zagitova can always show her OGM to the naysayers though, including those who wanted Medvedeva to win over her. She did exactly what she needed to do to win and executed everything flawlessly, and that's what makes a champion. While I was rooting for Med, I couldn't help but be thrilled for Zagitova. And kudos to her for continuing on, even after winning the sport's biggest prize.

Three skaters per country limitation is one nonsense for me, but the worst nonsense for me is that Kaetlyn wins spots for Aurora or Larkyn. Those two girls have absolutely no contribution to Kaetlyn’s success, have literally nothing to do with it, and yet, they are going to major events because of Kaetlyn’s hard work and talent.
Those two girls are not qualified, have absolutely no business showing themself to any international audience. How come do they even feel entitled to take advantage of Kaetlyn’s success?
Kaetlyn won the Olympic and WC medals only for herself and is the only one entitled to be taking advantage of it. And literally nobody else.
That’s the most ridiculous rule for me.

Kaetlyn could have skated this year and taken one of the spots if she wanted to, but she chose to take the year off. I also disagree that Aurora is not talented.

I am almost expecting an epidemy of traumas, sickness, headaches, stomach problems, bad mood etc. among the top four contenders.

Knowing the chances for a medal are slim and pushing for places for the next WC where others will gain almost for sure helps little.

Ok, Samodurova must go to WC. Others? Don't know.

Is that sort of thing very common? I know in his biography Weir said he faked an injury once but I really hope no one does this. Skate your best and let the results speak for themselves. I don’t think Russia needs to be worried about losing spots or not winning at least one medal

A poll? What a splendid idea. Spanish ice dance selection panel, are you taking notes?

Brilliant description of how Alinas gold and Adelinas gold were handled internally and externally. It kind of makes you go hmmm. yes I know Adelina's gold was the first ever for Russian women in figure skating and I loved it but Alinas gold was increfible too.

Interesting. I have to agree.

Figure Skaters need their home federation to help them in the beginning...That's why it's important. But I do agree 3 spot for Canada and 3 for Russia at the moment is a big joke. Time to review this.

While I would agree partially with the part:

"I'm just still bitter about the way Alina was and is being treated by, well everybody at home? The press, the Russian fandom, TAT"

(even if I don't follow the mention of "fandom", Alina is by several different measures the most popular athlete in Russia right now, yes, there are the ones whose name shall not be spoken as anywhere else, but defitely not significant group of public, maybe just loud)

I don't get that:

"her own team"

If just the reaction after skate is why did you say so, remember that competition was not over yet, there was Kaetlyn on the ice and more than that, other skater of their team, Zhenya, was still in warm-up area. So of course they were all still in huge tense how the final result will be. And even without this tension I would consider it not being appropriate towards Zhenya to celebrate extensively before her skate.

And if you mean by it "how they treat her now", than things like Alina being on Eteri's birthday celebration today and all that doesn't seem to me "how they treat her" thing... :)

What about extra wild card spots for GPF medalists? That would mean Russia would have 5 spots and Japan 4 with Alina, Liza and Rika already qualified. This would only add 3 entries to the total in a fair, merit based way.

Love this idea - what about even making it all gpf qualifiers? this way we add an even warmup group. although 6 for Japan and Russia might seem a bit extreme for some I guess.

I don't think other countries would be too happy that certain countries get extra wild cards, there is just too much politics involved. Also, Katelyn wouldn't have got to where she is without federation support. Hence, I think Canada should retain the benefit of her work. However, I agree it is silly to waste spots on skaters who are clearly not prepared for Worlds. I think countries should be given the choice to not use that spot and save it for the future when better skaters appear or transfer it to another discipline that needs it more. Of course to prevent excessive build up of spots, you can limit it to one or two such save or transfers in one season. So for example of equal craziness is that Russian men have 3 spots, same as women. If Russia could transfer at least one of those spots to girls, I'm sure they would love to. The ability to transfer spots also send out a message to skaters that you can't just rely on a good year from your predecessors. If you don't pull up, you risk losing it to another discipline.
