Yuzuru Hanyu: 2018-2019

Oh and I mentioned this in the general thread out there, but the voting for the overall rank was done real time during a TV broadcast. People watching TV were only given 30 seconds to vote on the spot. In other words, when given only seconds to consider who is your 'hero', more people thought of Yuzuru than even Miyazaki, so it is very reflective of his public support (i.e. this is not the result of fan power voting, but general public love). 180,000 is a HUGE sample size in Japan, even 1000 for a survey is already considered big.

I missed that final voting and couldn't give my support for Yuzuru :sad21: One of Yuzuru's fans I follow on twitter is also a huge SMAP fan, and at the moment of final voting, she got panicked because she couldn't choose Yuzuru or SMAP, and only she could do was to change the channel, it was so funny to read :laugh2:

SMAP may not be famous worldwide, but the group was pioneer in many ways in idol industry of Japan. Their split hit whole country, but they are still loved :)

Jaidee, a 14 y.o. Thai junior figure skater, says Yuzuru is her idol.
I’m positive there are many more of them out there, but figure skating is almost nonexistent here so we never hear anything about it in the media. Thanks to the fact that her father is a very famous singer-songwriter in Thailand, we got an article on her to find out that Yuzu has inspired yet another skater!

I hope you guys don’t mind me translating these bits of the article here:
- She wanted to try figure skating when she saw her older sister did it when they were little (sounds familiar?)
- Translation on the part about Yuzuru: “In terms of her future goal, because Yuzuru Hanyu (a Japanese male figure skater, a 2-time Olympic Champ who displays exquisite movements in competitions) is her idol, she aspires to compete at the Olympics.”
- Seeing that she is serious about her Olympic goal, her family allowed her to drop from school and she is now solely focused on training. They are very supportive.
- The last part of the article was her promoting the sport and convincing people to try it out.
- The article says she will be at Asian Trophy.

Who do you think is the sale icon of world championship?

And, take a look at the price  I know pot is legal in Canada now but should everyone be on pot when deciding the ticket prices for FS events? Of course, we all know they want to milk Yuzu fans but seriously shouldn't he get a percentage of the sale? And, we all know if he gets sth he is going to use it for right causes.

These prices are so unfair and sad when you know they are exploiting people's love for Yuzu. And what happens when he retires? Will they bring the prices down or perform competitions in empty venues?

...And I was planning on going, too. But probably the only way I can afford that is selling an organ.

I hope she does well!

Honestly, I hope all Yuzu fans restrain themselves and do not attend. Attending is a wrong message to ISU :noshake:

I think many Japanese will care more that Yuzu sees the support and full crowd he deserves than that the ISU get the cocked snoot theydo. Especially if the prices do dip - as I think they will have to!

The World's promotional photo has Yuzu only for single skaters... there is a huge Japanese language button ... the are not very subtle at what they want are they  when it comes to money he is suddenly honorary Canadian. Well then, shouldn't they also mark him like one? :sarcasm:

But the thing is its not like it's now Yuzu fans are exploited, a lot of these prizes are what scalpers end up reselling Saitama World's tickets to Yuzu fans anyways especially when it was lottery so some people can't get tickets even if they are willing to pay. It just end up being money going to different hands for the good seats.

My evil head is saying ISU is even thinking some of Yuzuru's fans will show up no matter what since his participation in WC will be limited before he retires, and they might keep the price high next 2 or 3 years :scard8:

Agreed. Esp since ISU seems itching for Yuzuru to retire.
Esp after what has happened this year. The fans in the stadium didnt fly halfway across the world to be insulted with complaints abt pooh rain.

Agree with all of the above. Also, why on earth they had to put that picture of him? It is almost impossible to make an unflattering pic of him but they managed to do that. Every time I see that picture it sets me over the edge.

Because they don't care. It's just a business, it can be summarized as a picture of Yuzuru Hanyu + unimaginable crazy high prices + Japanese language button. If I were Japanese I would be offended that they think they can milk me however they want. As a non-Japanese I want to punch them in the face that they are basically saying "We let you in if and only if you are rich". That is why I hope fans restrain themselves from fuelling this discriminatory treatment.

Regarding Worlds, I suspect their expectations of ticket sales are so outsized that they'll be disappointed when the arena doesn't sell out within a week, which it won't. Like, Vancouver sold quickly but in a smaller arena with tickets a fifth the cost! I am personally still planning on going as it's rare Worlds is so convenient to get to for me (and yes, among the many other skaters I hope to see there, I'd love to see Yuzuru live again), but the pricetag definitely hurts.

I tried to recompute again my possible expenses if I go for Montreal 2020.
But its really too much. If I will choose the lesser price tickets I am not sure if the view is good.
Well being there is a good experience but when I went to Saitama, and sat far back well it wasn't that satisfying.
Though I enjoyed the exprience of meeting other Hanyu fan's in the process.
I might just go for single event tickets and fight for the better seats once it goes on sale.

Oh hi Alysa Liu! We need more little girls training at TCC to confirm the existence of our ninja since they are the only ones allowed to post photos of Yuzu.

His soft spot for the kiddies is such a lifesaver....

I wonder how many shops in Japan do this? Sometimes there can be "too much" Yuzu in one place :laugh2: People are trying to work out which shop has the record for the most lifesize Yuzu cardboard figurines

If I was Yuzu myself and see this I will get a bit freaked out

I wonder who gets to keep these cardboard figurines? the shopkeepers (if so wayyy too lucky) ? or Kose will take them back? you bet some will find their way on ebay or yahoo once the advertisement campaign is over to be sold for a fortune
