2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

accidentally thought how hard the fight for the podium will be at the Russian Championship 19. Even getting into the top five can make the season for everyone. It should be cooler than the nats 18.

This has to be one of the events that I'm looking forward to the most if everyone I want to qualify qualifies. Throw in Sinitsyna and Kanysheva (hopefully) to last years mix, and it gets even better. Might be the only event where I could possibly be invested in every single warmup group.

Me too. It’s going to be a crazy competition. Quads everywhere, it will be impossible to predict [emoji23] There will be, what, 5 Eteri girls? It’s a shame there aren’t 5+ podium spots and Euros & Worlds spots [emoji23][emoji24] I’m happy about the dates too, the actual competition will be in between Christmas and new years which is the time that I’m usually bored out of my mind [emoji23]

Expressing sexuality through ones art does not mean you are inviting someone to objectify your body. Teens can write stories or poems about rape, doesn’t mean this is what they want in real life. Teens can draw or paint nude pictures, doesn’t mean they are inviting people to sexualize their own bodies. Art is a personal experience to express oneself and own ones sexuality. That does not mean they want or feel comfortable with adults sexualizing them.

The difference is when a teen is dressed or expressing choreography that has been created by adults that depicts adult themes or draws attention to a teenage body. Doesn’t mean they can’t be sexual, just that they should avoid bringing excessive attention to their bodies as they are not fully adults.

I think Sophia expressed sexuality through her burlesque performance, maybe wouldn’t have been my first choice for someone her age, but she portrayed an age appropriate personal expression that felt genuine and worked for her without over sexualizing movements or excessively skimpy consumes. It did not rely on drawing excessive attention to a teenage body. Liza expressed a more adult program for her exhibition that was fine for her as an adult but I think would have been inappropriate for someone younger. Some of Trusovas big spender choreography also felt inappropriate, especially given her age at the time. That’s the difference I see.

You may be right but sometimes you just go with your gut instinct and think to yourself why did she do that? And I know that art is different than real life but the figure skating girls and ladies are so nice and so sweet it's just kind of shocking when they do certain things to be different or sexy. In a way I can't blame them we were all young once I'd like to push the envelopes with whatever we were involved in.

I brought up the conversation about Talalakina and Tarakanova, etc because I was trying to steer the conversation away from this mess...... I failed.

But, it’s still interesting to think about the futures of those girls. Do u guys think any of them have a shot at the GP ?
I think I Gubanova gets a Grand Prix event. I just don't know if the Federation well also give her some Junior Grand Prix events along with a couple Challengers and a senior Grand Prix event to get her skating with more consistency this year. Nastya is such a beautiful skater love her spins. There is really no reason for her to still be in juniors since you didn't skate any Junior events last year. My question now is is her being with an former Olympic champion coach and with CSKA mean anything as far as her getting a push now goes? I guess we will find out in time.

Buyanova and Tarasova are bffs, so if Buyanova will make a push, Tarasova will pull her strings, they‘ll get 2 spots for Gubanova, leaving Sakhanovich and Tarusina without any.
Judging by how Sotskova was given to another coach, Buyanova seems to be focused on Gubanova more now as her main girl.

At least Trusova's costume was tasteful and I didn't feel like she was trying to express sexuality with her body. It was the lyrics and song choice that felt distasteful. I give a pass to the little girl butnot the coach. I don't pop my cork for every man I see. Who do you pop your cork for??!

I hope you're right about her getting a GP event. You can't compete on the JGP and GP at the same time though. And she didn't compete on the JGP last year so surely she won't this year. Gubanova is too good of a skater in every aspect to not be given a chance on the GP though, it would just be unjust. Also her sp last year was one of my favorites ever, totally an underrated routine. Here's to hoping she at least gets to shine on the GP.

In all honesty, not that many people get the whole popping cork reference tbh, especially if english is not your native language. I admit I didn’t understand it and I myself am english educated and more or less fluent in the language. Popping your cork is also a Colloquialism in itself, like where I am popping your cork means to flip someone off or to yell at someone, I didn’t even think about the other implication until multiple members of this forum made it into a big deal.

Well, if we’re going to talk about Big Spender for the 3,896th time.;)

I would agree that “pop your cork” in isolation may not be particularly meaningful. But in context of the entire song, it can only mean one thing, even if you are not a native English speaker. (And I  to all non native speakers who post here.)

Hey good lookin, so refined
Wouldn’t you like to know what I have on my mind?
Let me get right to the point,
I don’t pop my cork for every man I see
Hey big spender,
Spend a little time with me.
I can show you a good time...

Again, as I think almost everyone has said, a young teen skates the choreo and song given to her. She is not at all at fault. But if anyone on her team is near fluent in English, which is my understanding, :slink:

I'm hoping that they just didn't get the the expression - I'm guessing that if English is your second language, you might not recognize an expression like that. Then again, they should've at least looked up the plot context for that song or looked at the translation, but :scratch2:. I thought it was funny when the issue was first brought up because I remember seeing a certain famous American child dancer dancing to Big Spender on youtube at age 8 or something, and at the time I didn't really get/pay attention to the lyrics, but now I look back and am horrified. So ig seeing a 13 year old do it paled in comparison. Really old issue though, it's been over a year now.

Are only 18 girls allowed to participate Russian Nationals, or just everyone that meets the criteria?

I believe only 18, which is unfortunate. They definitely have 24 skaters of the caliber to qualify for nationals. It will be extremely competitive to qualify via the cup events this year - there will likely only be around 4-5 slots available. This assumes approx 10 qualify via GP assignments and 3-4 via JGPF qualification (must be 14 years old, so included Alena Kanysheva, Sinitsina, Tarakanova and maybe Vasilieva in my estimates; no Kamila, Daria, Maya)

I am German so English is my second language, a language that I like more than my native one, but in context of the song anyone who understands English knows what this is about when reading the songtext

I am very very curious to see what becomes of Gubanova, Guliakova, Talalakina, Tarakanova, Tarusina, and Vasilieva. Very very curious to see if one of them can break out of the B-list box and become a world team member, or at least a GPF competitor. Thoughts?

I think Gubanova and Tarusina will have their chances at GPs. Final is difficult even for the A-list. But in order to be successful in them, they have to do something extra apart from a clean skate. A new jump/combination or an excellent program.

But not in context of the song, I don't pop my cork for every men I see, is rather specific and has nothing to do with opening Champaign

I could excuse the choice of music. The lyrics are double entendres that aren’t really obvious to a non native speakers. But what I don’t understand is the one part of the choreo where they had her glide and make a gesture on her legs toward her private region. Maybe this is also a cultural thing, but in America that’s a profane gesture that implies inviting (or demanding) sex. Without the song choice, I could excuse that just as bad choreography but in the context of the song it looks really bad.

Oh no, let’s not pop the cork (heh) on the Big Spender debate again. Please. I beg of you. This is beating a dead horse literally years after it’s shuffled from this mortal coil.
