2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

So I guess this means Gubanova and Konstantinova are more likely to get GP spots than Sakhanovich and Tarusina.

I would think so. A bit surprised Tarusina is on the junior team again. I wonder if she will be on the JGP for another year or if she will just do challengers.

Naming exactly 9 skaters to the team makes it easy to justify submitting these 9 to the GP

I expected they'll keep her in juniors. She was quite good this season, took 2 JGP silvers, but didn't make it into JGPF...
Solid 8th place at RusNats, just below Medvedeva (7th) and higher than Gubanova (9th).
5th place at junior nationals, behind Trusova, Scherbakova, Kostornaya and Sinitsyna.

But hey, being on the junior team is still better than not being in any team at all.
At least she's going to get JGPs, and if she makes it into the JGPF this year and really proves herself, I think the door into senior GP would be open.

So I guess this means Gubanova and Konstantinova are more likely to get senior GP spots than Sakhanovich and Tarusina.

+ in juniors: only Valieva (from team Tutberidze) was included in the junior team, Khromykh and Usacheva didn't make it.

juniors are
Valieva
Tarusina (I predicted she'll stay in juniors)
Vasilyeva
Kanysheva
Sinitsyna
Tarakanova

Substitutes: Frolova (coached by Panova)

Also, Akatieva, Usacheva and Khromykh are in girls' team, Zhilina and Samodelkina are substitutes

But why is Gubanova and Kosntantinova named as "Reserves". Is there a risk that they won't get GP's after all??
Probably they are not prioritized to get 2. I wonder if that means Sakhanovich and Sotskova wont get submitted. I really wish Sotskova get her guaranteed 1 GP which she earned from being in top 24 WS

Wait, does this mean that we won’t see Usacheva on the jgp?☹️

It surprises me that Usacheva isn‘t on the team. I thought Eteri’s new junior trio would be a lock! But I guess there‘s still Junior test skates, right? And Alena Kostornaya wasn‘t even supposed to get JGP events two years ago but was so good at a national event that they gave her an assignment nevertheless. So, I‘d say it‘s still very likely that we‘ll see Maya and Daria on the JGP.

With Tarusina out of the mix, the scenario might be that Gubanova, Konstantinova, Sakhanovich and Sotskova all might get one GP spot.

but 2 of them is not on the national team which is make me unsure if they will get a GP but yeah hopefully they will get it

But Sima and Maria aren‘t on the list at all, are they? Not even as reserves... Imo, rusfed will try to give as many girls as possible a chance to advance to the final. So, I‘d say they‘ll prioritize that the main/reserve girls have two spots before anyone else gets a single one. I really think Masha and Sima deserve a chance. But seeing it now, I don‘t think they‘re likely to get it.

Also, I have no idea what the rules for the national team are to be included but it does surprise me that Stanislava is on the reserve team. She was the highest ranked senior at Nationals (4th), beat Medvedeva, Zagitova etc.. And fourth at Euros isn‘t too shabby either. She was even in the running for the Worlds spot. I mean, sure, she’s prone to bombing and I couldn‘t name anyone on the main team that could be switched for her but given the constant rumours about her being close to someone from the fed, a fed‘s favourite etc, it sure does surprise me that they didn‘t include her in the main team, especially since her performances this season weren‘t bad and they could easily justify it.

Stanislava is the last russian girl on the SB list though. So in a way it makes sense.

It is more about funding.

Overall, usually they get GPs, and usually they get 2 GPS, see previous years.

2018/19
Main: Zagitova, Medvedeva, Sotskova, Konstantinova, Tuktamysheva, Tsurskaya
Reserve: Pogorilaya, Radionova

2017/18
Main: Medvedeva, Zagitova, Pogorilaya, Radionova, Sotskova
Reserve: Konstantinova, Leonova, Lipnitskaya, Sotnikova, Tuktamysheva, Tsurskaya

I'm somewhat curious because this year they named 7 people to main team, instead of the usual 5-6.

well, i suppose we now know who is getting GPs.

Awesome team with incredible depth. Blows all other countries away. Never seen 1 country have so much talent in 1 discipline. This really is historic and unprecedented in figure skating. .

Well, yes, I think so, too since the girls ahead of her on the main team all deserve to be there without question. There‘s really no one that could be switched. In the past she‘d certainly be on that main team with her performances this season but not this year when you have three more than talented juniors moving up, a strong trio from Worlds + Liza with her 3As and some of the highest scores this season. I was just surprised, that‘s all. And I think she‘ll (and Gubanova from what it looks like) will still get two GP assignments each anyway.

I think they had to name all 7, because how could you leave any of them off? All the skaters on the main team had medals from major internationals, plus 3A swept the podium at both nationals. This is not the case for Stanislava, so there was no argument for her.

Zagitova: WC 1, GPF 2, EC 2
Kostornaia: JGPF 1, RNats 3, JR Nats 2
Medvedeva: WC 3, Cup Final 1
Sofia: EC 1
Sasha: JW 1, JGPF 2, RNats 2, Jr Nats 1
Liza: GPF 3
Anna: RNats 1, EYOF 1, Jr Nats 3, JW 2

Zagitova is a World Champion.
Samodourova is an European Champion.
Medvedeva got Bronze at Worlds.
Scherbakova is the current National Champion (seniors).
Trusova is the current National Champion (juniors).
Kostornaia is the winner of the JGPF and also medalist at both National Championships.
Tuktamisheva - had a strong season aaaand..they owe her that one for the drama around Worlds.

I don't see how they could excuse not including anyone of these on the team.

National Team was announced

Zagitova
Medvedeva
Kostornaia
Samodurova
Trusova
Tuktamysheva
Shcherbakova

Reserve
- Gubanova
- Konstantinova

Rusfed made the best decision they could imo.

Rules on team are not really transparent.

When easy, they take the nationals results, but sometimes they don't.

My thoughts here:
- Zagitova: they couldnt leave the OG and WC out of the team.
- Medvedeva: they couldnt leave the OS and World Bronze medalist out of the team.
- Tuktamysheva: Arguably russian #2 this season, GPF medalist, sort of beat Kihira at WTT, has 3A. No way to leave her out of the team.
- Samodurova: she beat Medvedeva at Rusnats, and won Gold at Euros.
There is no doubt about those 4, and no way to really drop one of them from main team for whoever else.

Then, there is 3A, who took the podium at Rusnats. Again, no way to drop one of them from main team. Yes, if it would go down to a choice between Zagitova/Medvedeva/Tuktamysheva and one of 3A, they would maybe drop one of 3A, but Konstantinova or whoever else, just nope.

The 7 girls above are also hold the top 7 international scores among russian ladies.

So i suppose the main team is logical. There is no reason to replace any of those girls with other russian skaters. There is nothing to argue about.

Reserve now is a bit trickier.
Konstantinova: #1 senior at Rusnats, fed's darling. So far, they gave her all the chances. While other skaters outperformed her internationally, I suppose she is in reserve because rusnats result + fed support.
Gubanova: Notice that there is not a single CSKA representative in the team so far, its all hogged by Tutberidze (4), Mishin (2) and Orser (1). My guess is that they chose Gubanova over lets say Sakhanovich or Tarusina because Gubanova is coached by Buyanova.

Of course those are just guesses.

As for GPs, considering there are 9 skaters, 7 in main and 2 in reserve, and 18 spots... It kind of clicks.
Would make sense Rusfed to try giving all their skaters 2 GPs, to maximize GPF chances.

Which is funny because I was just browsing through the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Russian ladies team and each year people were sure that the bloodbath could not become any worse. Well, it did, year after year and it‘s not likely to stop if we look at the current Juniors field. I can‘t say that I‘m not excited but it also scares me. There‘s three spots for those girls at Worlds/Europeans. Currently Russia has more than twice as much who are capable of winning/medaling. What are they going to do with all those ladies? GP assignments are going to be tough. Where you will end up can very much decide whether you‘re going to the final or not.
