Fading Dancers

Joe - IIRC Scott's book he decided to basically thumb his nose at the idea that Europeans didn't like Americana music and he skated a patriotic program... he either won or came in second I can't remember off the top of my head... he did it for a specific European competition...

I'll have to dig out my book...

but to answer your question - it's been 23 years since he won his Olympic gold... so we're getting up there ;) but I hear the judges were pretty anal then too.

It didn't do much for Weiss or the Kerrs. Come to think of it. Janke for Rodeo didn't win any kudoos,

I think if one uses Americana one might consider the old warhorses of Gershwin.

But the Kerrs finished 5th in Europeans, which has been their highest place yet with Last of the Mohicans....

The only European team who placed ahead of K/K at Worlds (but not at Euros) was Faiella/Scali, and I believe they had a disastrous fall in the FD at Euros. F/S placed ahead of the Kerrs at Worlds 2006, too.

The Kerrs were passed by Khokhlova/Novitski this season as well as new teams D/W and V/M.

BTW, the OD theme for the 2007-2008 season is folk and country. Does that mean that teams need to choose folk dances from other countries and avoid anything American?

A good question. If it were me, I would definitely not use anything with American Indians/First Nations in it. Or cowboy outfits. Or aborigines of any kind.

I truly believe they are not rewarded-you lose a place or 2.

Dubreuil/Lauzon (First Nations/Taboo free dance)
Christopher Bowman Indian Love Call SP
Philippe Candeloro 'Lucky Luke' LP
Kerr's Last of the Mohicans FD
Mark Cockerell Bonanza (AFAIR) LP
Eric Millot's Cowboy themed LP
Denkova/Staviyski Bach to Africa FD
Spitz and Gregory Hoedown FD
Heikko Fischer's Calgary 1988 LP in a cowboy suit
Ryan Jahnke Rodeo

About the only savages program I ever saw get much acclaim was the Duchesnay's Savage Rites 1988 FD

The Duchesnay's could do no wrong. Arguably the best team ever.

I remember once several years ago when I got a glimpse of skating on TV that a Russian dance team did a very cute kind of peasant dance. I think they won that,. too.

I was referring to the point about avoiding Americana music because European judges don't like it... just thought that it was funny given that this season saw the Kerrs placed higher than they have done at Europeans with Americana music ;)

it didn't do well for Janke or Weiss because they didn't skate those programs all that well most of the season... but IIRC Weiss won a medal at at least one GP assignment with his American tribute LP

Tanith and Ben did well with their Elvis routine - and he's as Americana-cheesy as they come:laugh:
