2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

Last year it was at least a week before the first was put up and several weeks before the last of the first group was added. I'm too impatient.

They’re eventually added on NBC Golds figure skating pass for the senior level. I think everything else is supposed to be on the usfigureskwting fanzone

Caveat re Fan Zone: For last season's USFS qualifying comps, Fan Zone excluded video for juniors as well as seniors.

... I noticed there were only 4 men competing. Does that mean they all advance?

I believe you are correct that all three senior men and all four junior men will advance.

... And yes I would stay for all the competitors. ...

:yay:  You would befriend a lot of them too. :ghug: :)

… BTW if anyone is attending EGL this weekend i will be ice monitoring (again) :)

 :thank:

So, I realize that this isn't the most accurate, but it is all I've got, but it you crunch numbers based on the last several years performances in the South Atlantic Regoinal, even if Gracie doesn't do much better than Rostelecom, she has a pretty decent chance of advancing to Sectionals, and I do expect her to advance to sectionals. in 2019, the 4th highest short was a 38.68 and the over all 4th place was 112.99 - which I think Gracie would feel like was a bad score for a long program, let alone a combined score. I realize she is a different skater and this is her first skate of this comeback, but I think she should easily move on even with a pop or a fall. Eastern Sectionals was a little tougher last year with Ting and Megan Wessenberg both scoring in the low 60, and Ting had over 180 combined, and Megan had 167 combined. 4th place was 157 combined.

For the 2018 cycle, the 4th place short was a 36, and the 4th place combined was a 103. Not to dismiss any of the skaters in the region, because they are doing far, far more than I can, but I think Gracie will have a easier competition for her first skate back. I wish her and all of the other competitors well.

Thanks for this info. Hopefully Gracie can skate well enough to surpass those scores. I just realized that this is her first senior regional competition, as she participated in GP events in her first year as a senior and was able to earn a bye through to Nationals.

My two cents:

Emily Zhang of SC of New York placed ninth in Novice Ladies at 2019 Nats.
AFAIK, she is the same Emily Zhang of SC of New York who just a few days ago competed in Junior Ladies at U.S. Challenge Skate.

The Emily Zhang who placed sixth in Junior Ladies at 2019 Nats then represented Richmond FSC.
Although there was active discussion earlier re Emily Zhang of Richmond FSC joining Team China, my guess (by process of elimination) is that she is the Emily Zhang who is competing in Senior Ladies at regionals this week -- now representing SC of Wilmington.

Anyway, good luck to all, including Gracie. :)

And now I’m even more confused.

In 6.0 days, the maximum group size at regionals was 18.

When IJS came in they raised it to 24.

A few years ago they added a provision that they would take the top 4 (or 6 if there were only two qual groups) from each qualifying groups plus the top 4 scoring skaters across all groups of those who hadn't made top 4 in their groups. That was to mitigate the effect of uneven group quality, especially at juvenile level where very few of the skaters are seeded across the groups and the distribution is pretty much random. (Maybe that has changed now with the data from the NQS available, but I don't remember reading anything about using that data for seeding.)

So if there were 6 intermediate or juvenile qualifying groups at a large regionals, that would mean 28 skaters in the final round, exceeding the official 24 maximum. But the alternative would be adding a second round of cuts -- two groups of 14 in a middle round and then top 12 or 16 or whatever advancing to the final. For juveniles that would mean skating the same program three times since they don't have an SP.

One year that there were 28 junior ladies at South Atlantics that all skated in one group. I think the thinking of allowing that was that 1) they were already going to have 28 juvenile girls in the final round at that level and 2) it was likely that some of the juniors would scratch at the last minute, as is often the case at higher levels. But few if any did.

So I guess now they figure 30 is not much different from 28 -- it doesn't require an additional warmup group.

well maybe because if they have 2 groups and then a final round, someone might not make the final round and advance to sectionals.

Is there an exact date and time for Gracie's performances at her regional? I don't want to miss it.

I think it’s a great idea to implement a minimum Technical Element Score because it will push even Sectionals skaters to increase their technical goods and consistency. What’s even better is that unlike International Championship requirements, if a skater semi-bombs their Short, they can still earn enough points to accrue a total of 75 and not have to worry about individual segment scores. Furthermore, it’s a good strategy for developing skaters across the board and it will hopefully lead to a more competitive and in-depth pool of skaters.

the group begins at 3:05 pm EST on Friday. she skates #13 out of 20.

also, i wonder why the other 2 regionals going on this weekend don't have schedules posted yet when competition began today?

The dance competition starting orders/results are available at https://www.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2020/28835/index.asp

Singles events don't start until Friday, so the draws for starting orders may not have happened yet.

Northwest Pacific schedule is available at https://www.nwpregionals.com/2020schedule

Again, the qualifying events don't start until Friday so start orders may not exist yet.

The accountants will put them up after they do the draws.

The Emily Zhang is the really good one. She used to skate out of Richmond but is now out of SC of Wilmington. She skates in a group coached by Victor Pfeiffer that includes some really good Junior men.

I looked for her name on the NQS list but did not see it near the top. That really surprised me -maybe she did not sign up for it.

Where did you find a published list? I was trying to keep track but wasn't able to find all the results. Thanks in advance if you can post a link!

She's scheduled to skate 13th (of 20). I don't recognize the names of the other competitors. Does anyone know who else in the field could give her tough competition?

Julia Biechler scored a total 159 and change at Eastern Sectionals last year. But she was last at Nationals.
As a junior, Emily Zhang scored a total 152 and change at Eastern Sectionals and was 6th at Nationals with 148+

Those two are probably the toughest competition here.

Morgan Leighow and Kristine Levitina were first and second at last year's Regionals, scoring 126+ and 117+; Grace Moyer, Kimmie Nguyen and Kyra Hoctor were 5th, 6th and 10th with much lower scores.

I don't either, and I hope her programs end up online somehow.

I'm really excited to see her back. I re-watched her Rostelecom skate from ~11 months ago, and although her jumps were not there, a lot of other things were well executed. Her spins were pretty solid, she maintained good speed through the end of the program, and the choreography was interesting (but perhaps not executed with conviction). Her confidence, stamina, and consistency should be far better now, so I'm hoping for a solid performance.

Disagree. Jill Heiner is the toughest!

As I mentioned before, she had an injury last summer that prevented her from competing at Regionals. Prior to that injury, she was one of the top Juniors.

I have a skater registered for the series.
All registered skaters have complete access to it ( all levels and disciplines) through their USFS EMS account.

Any word on Polina? With all the talk of Gracie, we seem to have forgotten she also competed in a summer event and seems to be flirting with a comeback? Is she signed up? Do we know anything?
