NBC Coverage of Skate America and Ice Network

Selfishly, I am not happy about NBC coverage because I can’t get good reception. I have cable but it’s always been bad. So has MSNBC but I get CNBC crystal clear. Any suggestions?

I am happy that skating is being picked up though by a network.Dee
Dee, It's USA cable you will be interest in as well as NBC.

Joe

Dee- do you get bad reception of NBC/MSNBC via cable? If so, have you tried getting the over-the-air signal to see if it's any better? Maybe a nice big antenna would help in this regard.

Yes, it's NBC/MSNBC via cable. As I said CNBC is crystal clear. Of the 2 MSNBC has no color and NBC has wavy lines through it. Every other channel is comes in terrific.

Cable in my area is the same way but MSNBC comes in clearly. but WBAL (Baltimore's NBC affiliate) has scan lines in it sometimes.

Over the air, though, WBAL-DT (HDTV) is excellent quality, but WBAL-TV (analog) has the same phenomenon you describe. I don't know if you have an HDTV or not but I would try getting it off the air (that is, if you really care enough to improve the quality). If that doesn't work, the digital broadcast will definitely be clear (assuming you're near the affiliate). Let me know if you have any questions.

Do you live far away from the dish the cable provider gets their signal?
You might need a "signal booster" but I have found that when the lower channels signal (usually just one) is bad it is because a connection somewhere is bad / loose. The outer part of the cable is just insulation, so it is usually the shielding not getting a good connection at a point anywhere in line to your TV.

Rarely it is the inter solid wire that is not cut cleanly at one of the connection points that can cause this too.

I just had a horrible thought. Bob Costas won't have anything to do with this, right?

Isn't Costas connected with NBC?

BTW, There are so many negatives about commentators:
Costas, Hamilton, Boitano, Bezic, Brownley, Button, Fleming, Kerrigan, Wylie, Carruthers, Gannon, and probably more.

I don't think everyone can be satisfied with any or all of them. What is it about these commentators that makes one dissatisfied?

If we were to list the perfect commentator, I doubt everyone would agree. No point in saying you like someone because another fan will disagree.

My suggestion would be to try to get to the arena. You will not hear any of them.

:agree: Right on Joe!

I have never heard anything bad about Terry though - I may have said he talks during programmes, but the amount he does is less than and usually in response. I think he is one of the best. He might not know or name all of the elements, but I think that makes a good connection. I will be bummed he is not also going to cover NBC skating events.

btw, I know my mom loves Bob. *shrugs*

He wasn't mentioned by Ebersol so I don't think so- the only reason I see him there is if they decide to have some "pre-game show" before the event, which is not mentioned, so I doubt it. But he doesn't bother me at all.

eh... I kind of like him actually. But he's covered so many sports over his time at NBC. That said, I doubt we need to "worry" about him in this case unless they decide to expand coverage. But if he IS there, I wouldn't throw a fit- although the scene would look completely different because I'm so used to Dick/Peggy at US Nats.

Bob Costas is the Olympic telecast anchor. I doubt he would be doing any skating commentary.

I just hope they bring back Olympic Ice --- along with its same toungue-in-cheek attitude. I enjoyed all of the episodes--- but a favorite segment was when they did the "mockumentary" where they all dissed each other ... hiLARious.

:agree: Don't know what they would call it.. ??? But I liked that as well.

I think they will...I remember them saying something like they'll be back for Vancouver after the last OI telecast. No need to worry. NBC/USA knows it was successful with it and I don't think they would walk away from a winning formula.

As for Costas- nah, this guy does everything  I think he did the NBA back when NBC had it and he hosts the NFL pregame show on Sunday nights. I'd be surprised to see him at US Nats, though- I think they'd be able to find enough people to cover the event so they don't have to turn to him as a last resort  ...that is, unless they plan to have a studio show as well...but since that wasn't part of the initial TV contract, I doubt it.

Another little tidbit I found. When Ebersol was asked about potential interest in acquiring the ISU rights next year, he responded by saying:

"[Our interest] will be totally dependent on how innovative [the ISU is].''

Innovative the ISU is not! But, if they are desperate enough for US TV coverage, who knows what they might do.

IMO, if NBC doesn't take it, no one else will.
