2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Who the hell is TSN and when have they commented on Alysa? I think you have your facts mixed up.

I think some people might be confused on the fact that TSN is Canadian but because the accents sounds similar automatically assume it's a US American network. That's probably where Alysa, since she's constantly used as a comparison for quad love in the US

Trusova said her 3A is progressing, sometimes she falls, sometimes she lands double footed. Looks like she’s approaching landing it confidently. Oh god, she only really needs 3A to close any potential gaps where her competition might get a lead. Get it gurl!

Stop comparing Trusova with Biles, Biles must be compared with Bonaly, since Biles and Bonaly compete with men and nobody finds any artistic difference. Trusova will have limitations with her art but she is still present, she is very feminine and will obviously continue to improve as Zagitova did.

What on earth...? I would sort of understand if you said to compare Trusova to Bonaly instead of to Biles, since these two have figure skating in common. But I think Bonaly was a very different skater and had a very different legacy.

I actually think the Biles/Trusova comparison is pretty apt; both are female athletes who are leagues ahead of their peers in their sheer athletic prowess. That much is indisputable. Personally, I also think both of them are also more artistic than they are given credit for. Sure, they're not the most artistic in their sports, but they're both more graceful and emotive than everybody complains that they are.

This doesn't make any sense.

This kind of biased American commentary is nothing new. Watch any US commentary for major competitions from the 90s and you'll find it too. They would just endlessly bash foreign skaters for certain weaknesses but sing the praises of the US ones without fail

Then go watch another country's commentary. Every country will tend to be biased towards their own skaters. You're complaining about water being wet.

I think even biased commentary should have some limits without getting straight up nasty and rude. Sometimes, they cross that line and it’s not unnatural to be shocked at lengths these people go. Like, is it okay to say “you can go and have a toilet break during the first half of her program, because there’s not much jumping happening here”??? The hell, it’s so rude!

We all know if Trusova was from any other country, they would be overwhelmed with joy and pride over an athlete, who’s making history and pushing limits like no other. But some people are just jealous and don’t have much kindness in their hearts.

Would that be the lengths to which Yagudin went? (Or at least the translations I’ve read). Rude, nasty and utterly uncalled for.

And the comments that Averbukh made, which I believe some posters here were laughing about. (And I am not at my desktop, so I cannot quote, but I will edit tomorrow) The translations I read, rude, nasty and utterly uncalled for.

Both commentators only proved that they were far from amusing and not at all informative.

I agree that all commentators should be like Ted. If only

I mean agree there are limits. Averbuck crosses those limits for me. So, did the comments that were made about Jason by a certain commentator. But, the TSN commentators weren't saying anything everyone doesn't already know. No one watches Trusova for her beautiful SS or artistry. They watch her because she is a crazy good jumper disguised as an adorable tiny girl. It isn't biased to say her athletism is what drives her wins... it is fact.

Omg I remember that Zagitova commentary, just horrible. A commentator's job is not to tell you how you feel about a performance anyways, its to add expert insight and analysis - not something that most commentators do these days.

Omg, in what interview? I bet the short program of this competition really put some more fire in her to land it - get that poodle girl!

Oh yes, to the lengths Yagudin went talking about Jason, if that’s what you’re asking for. He was pretty rude about him.
No one said “every russian commenter is super nice” if that was what you heard, you seem to be bothered with the critique of an American commentator in particular, although it’s pretty common internationally, and the comment I cited was of a Canadian one.

I was laughing about Averbukh not because I found his commentary funny. I was shocked, because it was pretty unexpected to hear him comment anything like that. He did say some things that were pretty harsh, and I did not like his commentary in general. And yes, I would not like his commentary, neither that of Tarasova, hence I compared the two.

Wouldn't it be cool if Russia sent Trusova, Scherbakova and Kostornaia to Worlds
And Zagitova, Medvededa and Tuktamysheva to Europeans?

They would probably fill out the two podiums anyways  :)

I put in a post about just that scenario not long ago, wondering if RusFed would even consider it, and pretty well learned it would have been better for me to never have mentioned such. :slink:

You mean like all those fans who were saying the most horrible and pathetic things I have ever seen about Alysa when she won on the JGP, many of whom were Russian? So much so that the ISU has to issue a warning about tone when commenting on the skaters, the chats were turned off, and the comment section under the JGP videos was disabled.

Get real people. There are horrible nasty hypocritical jealous biased people in every nation including yours and it happens to skaters from all over. People are going to be overwhelmed with joy and pride moreso about their own skaters, period. That’s nothing that any country is more guilty of than others. If someone was to criticize Sasha but didn’t hold Alysa to the same standard then certainly that would be hypocritical as she definitely deserves a similar critique, but I see that kind of hypocrisy everywhere. It’s not like any of you were defending or giving a crap about Alysa when it was aimed at her.

I also think it’s possible to praise both Sasha and Alysa in one moment for doing quads but in the next moment talk about all the ways they can improve in the PCS categories (even if the language is sometimes blunt). If this was essentially what TSN did then I don’t see how they did anything wrong. They weren’t the ones offering nothing but praise to Alysa so you can’t call them hypocrites on this point. That information was incorrect.

Sasha can further up her BV if she did 4T-Eu-3F instead of -3S, Yuzuru has done this. And it works because right now she doesn't have a flip in her FS

Yep, I’m pretty sure I said Alysa doesn’t have it any easier than Trusova, but also doesn’t have it harder since Trusova probably experiences the harshest critique from everyone.
And I don’t think it’s fair to compare commentators and fans, with casual viewers I kind of expect that they could be nasty and vicious since ... it’s the internet. However, paid commentators are (or should be) professional. Hence, I don’t think it’s fair to even put these two next to each other.

lol Bonalys attemps were invalidated because they were not allowed, Trusova is totally different also she has no female idol, her idol is a man named Nathan Chen.

Sasha's 100.20 TES sounded like "Take your bate and leave us alone. We're fed up..."

It could be 110+ overall with that Salchow clean. But...
- Not today!

To be fair Yagudin makes even nastier comments about Russian male skaters like saying they should grow a pair)) What did Averbuch say? I watched LP on youtube but all I got from SP was him calling one program boring and saying Medvedeva had a terrible skate (which she did).

Have to admit I prefer commentators/former skaters who point out things they don’t like as well as things they like just don’t want them to be biased towards their home country or particular skater
