2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Interesting to see Liza vs You Young for GPF chance. You has better jumping layout and very high BV in FS (even higher than Kihira with 2 3A in SC). But her 3A is not as consistent as Liza. There is also Satoko who if both fail to land 3A, may come out on top

Yes, Cup of China will be very interesting now that Young You has been assigned there. Whoever of Liza and You that gets second (or wins) will go to GPF.

I mean agree there are limits. Averbuck crosses those limits for me. So, did the comments that were made about Jason by a certain commentator. But, the TSN commentators weren't saying anything everyone doesn't already know. No one watches Trusova for her beautiful SS or artistry. They watch her because she is a crazy good jumper disguised as an adorable tiny girl. It isn't biased to say her athletism is what drives her wins... it is fact.

Whether this opinion is right or not - it's another question. They have right to have any opinion, of course. However, the problem is that they allow themselves to express their criticism and downplaying what she shows on the ice - during her skate - thus ruining the impression of it which could be much better otherwise. Even Yagudin/Averbukh are usually silent during the skate (and commenting maybe only on jumps being done) - allowing viewers to make conclusions themselves. They can be quite rude - but it is usually after the skate when it can't change opinion of a viewer if he liked it already. That's the key difference.
Also, they say that one of commentators on TSN was Tracy Wilson. Don't you think that for her as a current coach of active competing skaters - commenting other skaters performance is just unethical? Imagine Tutberidze criticizing Medvedeva's skate on tv? Or Bradie's? What reaction it would trigger - what do you think? :rolleye:

This is what confused mw about Alina being at NHK; she had first choice and chose NHK when it was certain that Rika would be there, along with another top Russian. I know she loves Japan and Japan loves her, but I think the better choice would've been Rostelecom.

It is possible that getting into GPF is not her first priority. Also Alina beat Rika in Japan twice in a row. Therefore, the team might think that chances are good for her to do it for the third time. She loves Japan and she has many fans there. There are Japanese sponsors. She had troubles performing in Russia last season. Etc.

The ISU uploaded videos of every medalist at Skate Canada except for Sasha (and Young You) it seems? Or are these two geoblocked? It's really a shame... I'd love to have an easy-to-find video of Sasha's skate, because it's the sort of thing I want to re-watch every day

They're there for me in the UK, both SP and LP, must be geo-blocked for you.

Professionals like trainers, coaches can comment on other skaters, they know the sport, but for most it is too difficult to remain impartial. Goes for Canadians commenting on Russians, and for Russians commenting on non-Russians the same way.

Though I and many others like good commentary, the silent ISU streams are a godsend, and obviously nobody will complain over commentators' bias.

... Sergey Rozanov runs it himself.

Rozanov and Dudakov look like they are doing a good job technically lately and put a lot of effort. All the skaters from that team have more or less improved during the last couple of months.

Zhilina kind of reminds me of Trusova. The body build looks similar, a muscular kid from a young age.

Something that went a little under the radar due to all this talk about commentaries, quads, etc. This was the second time Evgenia Medvedeva finished out of the podium in an international competition during her entire career. (last time happened in france last season)

I feel like we have to discuss this cause i don't know if this is a case of:

1) Accepting that she will never be the skater she was again, and unlikely she will compete with the newcomers so they decided to water down everything hoping to find that consistency.

or

2) She'd like to do more but she still struggles to adapt to this approach and after a year the big issues are still there.

Realistically is there a plan to make the team for Worlds?

Few things i'd like to point out:

- since last year they started to work on the lutz edge and the 2a. To this day these issues are still there: the axel is better when it is landed, but it is also more inconsistent, while the lutz she got an "e" even here.

- her spins are significantly regressed, i don't understand what they are doing there: yes she ditched the layback spin to avoid back injuries but she's also getting V all the time on positions that used to be fine in the past.

What i don't understand:

- the 3loop is arguargbly her best jump and she doesn't have that in the short for whatever reasons (i guess they were hoping to not get calls on the lutz)

- they could up the technical contents in the free: we saw her landing 3-eu-3 combos in practice, i'd personally push that over the 2a-3t which always look a bit scrappy.

I'm worried this is more and more becoming the same situation that happened to Tursynbaeva when she was in Toronto forcing something that doesn't work.
