2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Oh yes, to the lengths Yagudin went talking about Jason, if that’s what you’re asking for. He was pretty rude about him.
No one said “every russian commenter is super nice” if that was what you heard, you seem to be bothered with the critique of an American commentator in particular, although it’s pretty common internationally, and the comment I cited was of a Canadian one.

I was laughing about Averbukh not because I found his commentary funny. I was shocked, because it was pretty unexpected to hear him comment anything like that. He did say some things that were pretty harsh, and I did not like his commentary in general. And yes, I would not like his commentary, neither that of Tarasova, hence I compared the two.

I apologize if I confused posters, I believed the original post I replied to was in support of a post that 90% of American commentators were biased and then citing a Canadian broadcast to support that. And then another post about how hypocritical it was because if Trusova were from their country, they would be singing her praises. And then finally a post that all commentators are biased in favor of their country (which I agreed with).

I was not on my desktop and I could not do multi quote. This thread moves so fast it is hard to keep up with. I just wanted to support the statement that all commentators from all places can be rude an/or biased. I wasn't trying to pick on any one country or broadcast. :)

There is a difference. Averbukh, Yagudin, TAT - they are not political correct, of course, sometimes to the level of nastiness. But, political correctness is not what Russia is famous for. And what is even more important, they are biased and opinionated but it extends to their personal preferences rather than some patriotic feelings. Like TAT being clearly displeased with Eteri's success, never naming Alina by her first name, etc. What people are pointing out to here is a clear national bias of some Western commentators.

And what about "what about?" If I am not mistaken, you have been one of the most decorated critics of this approach to reasoning.

I tried to explain what I was responding in the above quote, I won't do this from my iPad again. :)

From my own perspective, I often find that "political correctness" is simply hiding "I want to be rude." I don't like rudeness from any commentator. I don't like it from Johnny Weir, I don't like it from certain websites, whoever. Personally I rarely find it amusing and don't feel it adds to my knowledge or understanding.

Ted on the other hand stays quiet during the program. Then, during the replay, he explains what happened, what was right and what was wrong, in a calm way, after the program. He loves *everyone*. Russian ladies, Japanese men, Indian ice dancers.:agree:

I learn from him. I like learning.

All I know is that it will be heartbreaking to see whoever ends up staying at home. Especially from the 4A. Let‘s assume three of them make up the team, that will leave one of them to stay at home alone. So, one of Kostornaya and Shcherbakova (assuming that, as of now, Zagitova and Trusova are safe bets) will not make it...

I know those are the rules and life and all but it seems cruel. Are there any spring competitions where we can send the poor girls to whose season would otherwise end after Nationals?

Why do you think that Zagitova is a 'safe bet'? From what we've seen so far she is skating the same technical content as last year while Trusova/Kostornaia/Shcherbakova are landing much more difficult technical content. If those 3 maintain what they've done at the beginning of the season how could the Fed send a skater that would need some skaters to fall to win and potentially podium whereas the other 3 are looking like safe bets for a podium sweep at Europeans and Worlds? Let's not forget there are Japanese and Korean skaters that are doing triple axels in both the SP and FS.

Well said all the way around. And I'm glad you got to your desktop. ;) I almost never post hear from my hard wired laptop. It's just more convenient for me to use a phone or tablet.

Загитова тоже будет усложнять программу. У меня такое предчувствие.

Honestly I hope they don't do this. She is probably tired, and there is more of a chance to get injured. It is a pressure cooker of a few days, and I've noticed so many skaters seem thoroughly wiped out in the Gala. (And I remember Nathan suffering a horrible injury in a Gala).

ha... for Trusova jumping in a gala is like training 10min a day with Tutberidze ... Remember, have you ever seen Trusova tired after jumping quads in a exhibition ... Now, if they say it for menI get it, they can't go at the same speed as Trusova in the exhibition.

hahaha... I just saw the fanpage on instagram, she's training quads synchronize with Hanyu

Well, precisely because she is doing the same content as last year and yet keeps getting scores similar to those of the other three. She is also a huge star and has marketability, PCS and GOE. She is just that, a “safe bet“ to rely on when the others with their ultra-c elements make mistakes.

Her FS at JO was 154. Kostornaya‘s (albeit with an UR 3A) at Finlandia was 157. Shcherbakova scored 160 for a FS with two quads. Alina‘s regular SP score is around 80. That gives her a lead of about 3-4 points over Kostornaya (unless she successfully includes 3A there) and about 5-6 over Shcherbakova and Trusova. Now, I believe Trusova will be the clear leader this season, that‘s why I named her safe bet alongside Zagitova. But Shcherbakova and Kostornaya? We will see. For now they are much closer than one would think given their differences in technical content. Now, if I was the fed, I would clearly choose the skater who can score similar to the top skaters without any risky elements than the one who needs two 4Lz or 3As. That‘s why, at this point of the season, Alina looks like a safe bet. Considering that she hasn‘t even skated her first GP yet this can obviously change. Next week we will see what the judges do when it‘s her vs. Kostornaya. That should give us first sign of who will be chosen later on when it comes to Worlds selection. In any way, I‘m quite curious what‘s going to happen at Nationals. The 4A are all quite capable of sweeping a Worlds podium. Zhenya and Liza could play spoiler should they improve significantly. So far it doesn‘t look like it but we‘ll see what happens. Will be intriguing.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Alena K and Zagitova (sorry.. I love Alena but I'm really struggling with the spelling of her last name for some reason- I am dyslexic- not just saying that I really am- I can't actually sound out words I have to memorize them and for some reason her name is not sticking with my brain. Maybe it is the fact that I've seen it spelled 2 or 3 different ways).

I've been really interested to watch Zagitova grow as a performer and artist. I think Alena just comes by it naturally. It's a gift and she has it. I really, really hope that she doesn't get swallowed up by all the great jumpers because what she does have makes her special and beautiful to watch. Russians do seem to have an aesthetic for line and poise and elegance so I'm hopeful that they will continue to support her even if she doesn't have quads.

Please provide a translation for this. This is an english speaking forum.

“Zagitova will complicate her program too. I‘ve such a feeling/knowledge/presentiment.“

I can speak Russian now. Just kidding, that’s what google translate tells me.

Thanks Fluture. Google translate scares me.

Just a reminder to all to please provide a translation if you post in any language other than English, please.

Friends don't make friends use google translate.

I understood it without Google Translate. :p Largely from the context of the discussion. *patting myself on the back*

I only understood Zagitova. *sees myself out* :slink:

And so is Evgenia but times are changing. There is no safe bet in this situation, obviously.

Zhenya is my absolute favourite but it‘s very clear that her scores aren‘t up there with the top scores right now. She needs to skate squeaky clean in a few competitions before we can judge. Zhenya is and will always be a star who does a lot for the sport in promoting it. This won‘t get her on teams, though and she knows that and tries to catch up.

At the moment (and that should be emphasized) Alina is different because her scoring seems to be roughly on par with the 3A. This can change, of course, once their PCS rises, we will see. I do agree that my use of “safe bet“ was probably wrong choice of words. But I also said that at the moment she looks like a safe choice for the team and this can change quickly. At the very least we will have to wait until next week to get any clue on how Alina will score in a full competition.

Well..my Russian is appalling. Russia is number 2 on my bucket list (after France) so I'm going to have to learn some (at least please and thank you and where is the bathroom?)

Skate Canada had probably the strongest overall field in ladies singles. What about the other stages?

Coming weekend, in GP France, Zagitova vs Kostornaya is going to be very exciting. Who will come out on top? Very most likely they'll go 1-2 in both of their stages, but I have a feeling it is a Gold and a Silver for each of them, so an equal 28 tally in the rankings, and both with very large scores, but probably well clear of any tie breaking.

Compared to Shcherbakova and Trusova, Kostornaya can hardly be seen as a child anymore, and will need to live up to 'senior' expectations right away, for her skating and interpretation of images always has been very mature.
