2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

It would be wonderful to think that. But Zhenya has a huge, dedicated, loyal fan base. Everywhere she goes the cheers are twice as loud as those for other skaters. It seems to me that she is sort of the 'michelle kwan' of Russia. I'm not sure the casual viewer knows who Sasha is yet, whereas Zhenya is more of a household name. At least this is what I'm guessing. Basically that Zhenya is the celebrity draw for figure skating in Russia.

It wouldn't make sense for Russians to not know who Sasha is, I mean, she makes history every time she skates, what more is there to say?

Undoubtedly Alexandra' s appearance there. She most definitely is a household name in Russia, even among those who only follow the senior circuit, and among casual viewers.
She and Anna and Alena have together been drawing increasing numbers through last season's junior circuit, the last S and J nationals, J world and this season's S debuts, adding to the already the huge drawcard in Alina, as reigning Olympic champion, reigning World champion, and accomplished ambassador for the sport. No doubt some extra may also have been curious to see how Evgenia is doing, but she seems to be regarded increasingly as "yesterday's child" among the general followers of the sport in Russia.
Just my impression from closely following the domestic sports and general news media in Russia.

Until October of this year, she was a cute girl from Arkhangelsk with a fantastic flexibility and amazing spins, - and now her two different quads in her 11 years make this wonderful child a potential contender for high positions in ladies single figure skating in the near future.

The quad rivalry of Veronika and Sofiya (tTutberidze's) is going to be something to watch with immense enjoyment over the next couple of seasons. Sofiya is also developing her trixels, no doubt inspired by long-time rival, Sofiya (tDavydov's). I wouldn't be surprised to see quads developing in Alina (Zh), who is already an accomplished skater and has the same strong build as her big sister. Somewhere there is a clip of the two sisters doing a lo o n g cantilever of the Alexandra--Shoma variety. Adelya could also surprise us soon with unassisted quads. She has an Alexandra-type build and in fact reminds me of Alexandra in her skating.

Well, the dedicated Russian fans know who Sasha is. Sasha hasn’t won any of the big competitions that Zhenya has like Euros, Worlds, Russian Nationals, or Silver at the Olympics. I think that as she progresses in her senior year Sasha will become more popular in Russia, it’s just that right now she doesn’t have the reputation that Zhenya or Alina have. The same goes for the rest of the 3A.

It is kind of the same concept in the United States. Not many people knew who Bradie was until she won nationals and went to the Olympics. Many people know who Gracie and Ashley are though because of their reputations and accomplishments. But now Bradie has made more of a name for herself.

Congratulations to Elizaveta :)

Here she is at Khrustalnyi with young Anna and Dasha 3 or 4 years ago.

This is gonna be confusing, we might as well call them Junior and Senior (like in the movies: Tomas Jr and Tomas Sr) [emoji1]

Very true! Although we could call them Zhenya Med and Elizaveta or Liza Med. I always refer to Zhenya Med as such because there's also Zhenya T in pairs...

Anyway congratulations to Elizaveta Med! I assume she and Zhenya Med aren't related at all? Pretty cool last name for a skater moving up the ranks ;)

So Alina, Anna and Aliona made all these people watch SCI? Even though they weren‘t competing there? Interesting.

Look, I don‘t want to say Sasha or anyone is not famous or beloved in Russia. Because she is and rightfully so. But people like Alina and Zhenya are Olympic stars - and the Olympics generally draw more attention to athletes - both nationally as well as internationally. Watch test skates, how many people were screaming for Zhenya, how many cheers she gets whenever she‘s competing literally anywhere. How the Cup of Russia Final was immediately sold out after it was announced that Zhenya would compete. If that‘s “yesterday‘s child“ I‘m sure many skaters would like to be just that.

People were watching SCI because it‘s one of the most competitive GP event this season. Top Russians, top Japanese, top Korean ladies. Many fans tuned in because of Zhenya but many tuned in because of Rika and Sasha and Young as well. Had to edit that because I think it‘s important. I surely don‘t think everyone just watched because of Zhenya, that‘s a bit naive.

Or 1 and 2 like people do for Kostornaia and Kanysheva (AK1 and 2).

What about Aliona junior/Aliona senior? Will only be difficult once both have turned senior.

There were a lot of skaters there, who are already famous, including Rika, the japanese #1 skater, Young You, the korean young prodigy and star, Bradie Tenell, US National champion.
It's silly to reduce it all to just 1 skater. It was a star-studded event

Just the numbers from TV1 YT :
FS Sasha 155 thousand views
FS Zhenya 37 thousand trosmotrov
exhibition Sasha 108 thousand views
Zhenya's exhibition 42 thousand views.

Which is just one channel, when there are so many channels where you can watch both skates, and why does it even matter? 3a, alina and zhenya are beloved in Russia, so why do some of you in this particular forum seem too have the need to make it as if zhenya has no love in Russia? When we all see it is not so.

These are just numbers. Basically 1TV is a Russian audience. There is no hatred here unless you yourself bring hatred here.

Figures speak for themselves, today’s winning stars, exciting, setting records, vs ‘yesterday’s child’ not doing so well in the general public’s view.

Also IMO Medvyedeva’s somewhat unflattering costumes don’t help her popularity in the eyes of non dedicated sports viewers.
#TeamBOrser’s ‘packaging’ isn’t helping here, Medvyedeva is visually less appealing to the younger audiences.

It is inevitable for athletes to fade, general populace’s memory is short, attention span even shorter.
No results, no exposure in today’s fast moving mainstream media.
