Alena Kostornaia

Aliona's teacher (?) and classmates from school congratulated her on getting a world record score in the SP!

Very cool! :peace:

Anyone want to tell us what the Russian, Italian, and Spanish commentators had to say about Aliona's performances?

Russian:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv3UTVFkSjs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJonqSkGTGo

Italian: (FS)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2T4CK4pCNY

Spanish: (SP):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smKJ8X4WqLM

Once I get my hands on a version of a Japanese broadcast, I'll share what they said...

I'm not a native spanish but my level in the language is pretty much like one but the translation isn't perfect because English isn't my native language either ... so my brain is a little confuse sometimes. But this is the translation of the Spanish SP ( the general idea):

First they said that the Eteri’s girls are more jumps than artistic. They have a child's body

During the program:
_ beautiful 3A
_ Great length on the combination
_ Beautiful combo spin

End of the program:
_ marvelous and beautiful program
_ great technic and power
_ It’s the one we prefer if we consider 3A ( they said the names .. i call them the 3A)
_ Power in the jumps. Her body is more develop if we compare to the other 3A. Not so much a skate of a chid but is a skate of a women
_ She is a elegant skater with big jumps and beautiful spins
_ I’m enchanted by her. She is 16 years old but her jumps are from a woman not a child. Beautiful exits on the jumps
_ Good scores on the PCS
_ 3toe more big than the first jump
_ Great stepsquence and “phils”/ edges ( angle of the skate)
_ Beautiful cat eyes and beautiful choreography

In the scores:
_ The other skates on the russian team and Rika will have a hard time to beat her in the SP
_ Eteri is preparing Zagitova. She is with Danill
_ She put 14 points on technic on Karen Chen

LP

The woman to beat. She is in the first place. She won the GP in france. She won GPF junior. She needs to be first or second place to the final. She is in the way to the GPF in senior. She needs the 2 triple axel. She is doing them in the beginning of the program.

During the program:

_ First 3A
_ In << Ur. She avoid the fall.
_ beautiful 3F+ 3T

End of program:
_ Except for the 3A … She is 1,51 … she have powerful jumps … she is very elegant… We like her very much ( she is the one we like the most of the 3A).
_ Her program is classic, she gives the program her personality, is different, she flirts … she is feline ( about her eyes)
_ She gives the program her personality,
_ Her program wasn’t perfect because of the triple axel… the triple axel look strange … because it was missing << Ur and rotate on the skate on the exit
_ beautiful spins, level 4… a complete skater… level 4 in the steps … monstrous 3F+ 3T … she lives the program, great interpretation … she is not a rigid skater… she flirts …
_ Rika is giving interviews .. But is a dream if anyone thinks that Rika is gonna win.. But Rika got more than 9 in PCs by all judges and Kostornaia didn’t … but she got better Tech

Any clips with those good Canadian commentators that did the commentary in (J)GPF last year? I've checked the CBC clips by VPN, but they are all silent, i.e. w/o commentary?

Yes, I think because of the ISU contract renegotiations this year, CBC is only doing streaming coverage and not TV coverage, so there's no commentary. :sad21: I think they might be airing Worlds at least though (?)... It is a shame because I would love to hear what Kurt Browning and Carol Lane have to say about Aliona!

I'm also really missing the British Eurosport commentators... :sad4:

WHOLE POST

Thank you so much for translating, Artemisa!! :thank: I really appreciate it!!
It's nice to hear that like so many of the other commentators, they also prefer Aliona.
It's also cool that they commented on Aliona's cat eyes--I have long thought that she looks kind of like a cat.

How sweet is this?? Rika trying to fix Aliona's collar--but actually Aliona likes it that way!

Ugh, I just got into a little tiff with someone on Instagram over them saying they ship Yuzuru Hanyu and Alyona romantically. Excluding the creep factor of shipping real people, I get that Alyona is a beautiful young lady and a very mature performer for her age, but I wish people would just let her be a 16 year old. Adults sexualizing a teenage girl is never ok. Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now.

Sorry for the flurry of posts--last one from me.

Yuzu hugging Team Tutberidze

Apparently more people in Japan watched the Ladies FS than the Men's FS, which is kind of shocking considering how popular Yuzu is... But maybe Yuzu was the only draw, so the Japanese audience only tuned in for him, while there were three big names in the ladies, plus the other Japanese skaters. Average rating for the ladies was 16.2% viewership; for the men it was 14.5%.

Aliona in a Japanese newspaper!

https://twitter.com/corszk1220/status/1199088360502919168?s=21

I had seen smaller sections with her from NHK but she finally got a huge picture and her own little article it seems (I don’t speak Japanese)

Actually there are quite a few articles about her online--mostly just talking about the fact that she won, but if anything more interesting comes out, I will try to translate. Since I'm always asking other people to translate, here's my contribution!

The article pictured in the tweet has the headline "I want to enjoy [my performances] and make the audience happy."
On the far left, the vertical bold text says "She'll head to the Final with her beautiful skating."
The bold text (horizontal) in the middle: "With NHK Trophy Sapporo she has two wins in a row--16-year old Kostornaia."

The first part of the article talks about her winning, and then there are some Q&A's. I think it's from the press conference, since I've seen similar comments in other articles.

Q: What's your goal for the Final?
A: To enjoy myself and make the audience happy.

Q: It's your first senior season. What are you enjoying?
A: What's very different from junior competitions is that you get to go to far-away countries. In juniors we also went abroad, but mostly within Europe. In seniors, you can go to the US, China, Japan. That is fun.

Q: Now you have a triple axel, which you didn't have as a junior.
A: I was able to do the triple axel when I was a junior too, but there are also other elements [to work on], and you also need time to polish your programs. There wasn't enough time to properly train the triple axel, so I didn't put it in my programs until I turned senior.

Q: Now there's a lot of focus on ladies doing quads.
A: This is proof that figure skating is advancing. Every year, there are new things being done on the technical front, and I'm glad that skating is becoming exciting.

Q: Your beautiful skating is another "weapon." Do you have a role model for this?
A: I'm following the example of Carolina Kostner (2014 Sochi bronze medalist; Italy).

Q: What do you think of 2-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu?
A: In the figure skating world, he's more than human; he's like a god.

Wow... I wouldn't expect that.. I mean, even I watched Yuzuru (and some other guys) and I watch almost exclusively ladies category..

Thank you for the translations, Artemisia and Batsuchan! It is so lovely to hear others praise her, and I do like to hear her own views. I get the impression that she is very sensible, and that she really loves what she does. May she achieve her goal at the GPF - as long as she is enjoying herself, I'm sure the audience will be happy!

Wow! Our girls are such superstars!

Ok, here's Aliona's interview from the middle of the exhibition gala!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6fhWeKxOiw

And here's my translation of the Japanese (but what Aliona actually said in Russian might be slightly different):

Announcer: Welcome to Shizuka's room!
Aliona: Thank you very much.

Shizuka: How many times have you been to Japan? [Kostornaia-senshu means 'skater Kostornaia;' senshu means player, as in tennis player, baseball player, etc.]
Aliona: This is my third time in Japan: the first was Nagoya for the Grand Prix Final; the second was for the show Dreams on Ice, and I was able to do some sightseeing around Tokyo; and this is the third time.

Shizuka: Do you like Japan?
Aliona: Very much.

Shizuka: What do you like about Japan?
Aliona: Everything!

Shizuka: Last season, you didn't do triple axels, but this season you were able to do triple axels with extremely high consistency, and you won this competition. When were you able to master the triple axel?
Aliona: The first time I was able to land the triple axel was during my first junior season. But then the off-season started, and when I came back and thought I should try to practice them, unfortunately, I wasn't able to land them anymore. [I think that's what she said; I couldn't quite hear the translation.] Then, before the start of this season, when all the Russian skaters get together and practice [at the test skates], I understood that I needed to change something in my programs, so I decided to train the triple axel.

Shizuka: You're known for your huge jumps, but your strength is not just your jumps--you're also very good at spins and they're beautiful. What part of figure skating do you like best?
Aliona: Of course, I like the jumps, but if you ask me what I like best, it's skating itself.

Announcer: Well, you have many fans in Japan, so please send a message to your fans.
Aliona: Thank you to the people who have always supported me and to the people who came yesterday and the day before--thank you for cheering for me. That support is very important to me, and I feel it when I'm skating.

Announcer: That was Kostornaia. Thank you!

I am new to the party but just want to share my thoughts, I did not follow Alena as a junior but wow she blew me away from the first comp of the season.
Nobody will ever fill the hole in my heart left by Sasha Cohen's retirement but Alena is the first female skater since Sasha I feel really excited about. John Nicks, Sasha's coach, used to say that Sasha was incapable of hitting a bad position. I feel same about Alena she even manages to step out of jump gracefully
And to be objective her jumps are better than Sasha's (painfully as it is for me to admit that ha ha) at least in height and consistency (I did like Sasha's air positions though). So at 16 she is already a marvel and here hoping for a great career for her!

When I used to dance back in the day, sometimes you meet people who are naturally gifted.
They just move and can repeat the moves so well, and it's so innate and natural.
I feel like Alyona was born with all this innate grace

Super cute! That laugh!

Yes, this. She has that grace and poise on the ice, and even when she rides, despite being a novice, she has that same innate quality of movement and balance. I imagine she's one of those people who is naturally competent at a variety of sports.
