“The fear of not being accepted is a huge struggle for me,” she says. “Being perceived as [going through] ‘just a phase’ or [being] ‘indecisive’ is a common thing for bisexual/pan sexual women. I don’t want to shove my sexuality in people’s faces, but I also don’t want to hide who I am.”

Kudos to Amber for deciding to talk about it :) I'm sure she'll be an inspiration for some younger skaters. Also good luck to her at nationals. I hope she's supported there.

Brava, Amber:clap:

Also loving, as the article says, that she has a mentor in training mate Tim LeDuc: “Anyone who would prefer my silence is not aware of what’s at stake and the good that comes” from being out.

Good for you, Amber! and isn't it just great that both Ashley and Timothy are such good support.

Well done, Amber!

I keep thinking about how Adam Rippon has said that once he was out, his skating became so much more true, because he was being true. I don't know if Adam used this word, but I think it's not just about the acceptance of others (*although that's a huge hurdle, as Amber rightly said) and accepting oneself. It's also about valuing yourself. That's how I see it, anyway.

Yay Amber!

Now please start skating to programs that reflect just what a fierce woman you are, rather than these milktoasty emo programs.

Good for Amber for coming out publicly! It's crucial to have diverse role models, especially in a sport like women's figure skating, which can often seem incredibly homogenous and 'not with the times'.

I enjoyed reading the article. Thanks for sharing!

It's brave to make this announcement. -And aside from that, this season, I found her presence in the Kiss and Cry so funny.
I hope to see more of her in the GP. :hap10:

I don't have much to add, but wanted to add in my support & admiration of Amber. :luv17::luv17::luv17:

Good for Amber. Now I'm really!!! rooting for her. When she was dating Nathan, I never would have though she would reveal herself as such (bi/pan etc.) But being of similar proclivities I am pleased with her honesty.

Good for Amber. This is freedom, and freedom is the first step towards happiness.

Best of luck to her at Nationals.

I had forgotten about her and Nathan.

It is crucial to the sport to show all colors of the Rainbow. While her sexuality should not define her skating, I hope she encourages others to come out. It is almost 2020 and there are still only a handful of out skaters.

I don't entirely disagree with you, but I think this year's programs were important for her personally in some way. Maybe expressing unaccustomed (or even unpopular) emotions felt connected to bringing out something true in herself. I am only speculating; I'm not her and don't know what's in her head.

There has been way too much of people shoving their sexuality in our faces in recent years so I'm very pleased Amber does not want to do that and that she is sensitive to not doing that. I truly don't care who is gay straight bisexual pansexual etc etc etc and I don't want to know about it and I don't need to know about it. The main thing for me is Amber is comfortable going public with this and that her life is good. The good thing about my sensitive nature is I don't like somebody just because of their sexuality or religious beliefs or not. I like and dislike people on their merits and what I know about them and that's it. Fortunately figure skating has some super people in it and there are a lot of people to like in figure skating no matter what they believe how what lifestyle they live.

There is A LOT to unpack here

Would you say the same about a heterosexual person publically announcing their marriage, which has been happening for centuries?

Exactly. As a gay junior skater, this is one of the most ridiculous things people say.

I don't think Amber is coming out for herself only. Like Adam, she is letting young skaters know that anyone can be a champion no matter who they are.

making a wedding announcement in the newspaper is not the same thing as what Amber was talking about. I think we all appreciate her feelings and sensitivities. She is probably a very modest low-key person.

I do not care when heterosexual couples make an announcement of their marriage or when same-sex couples made an announcement of their marriage. Most people are way past that. Thankfully.
