Well, I'm glad Michelle is media savvy. A lot of countries already hates the US, last thing we need is a female Johnny Weir as an envoy. Being controversial is overrated.

I agree that MIchelle is better suited for an envoy than Johnny.

Why is there a perception that it is great for Johnny Weir to "be himself" (by being controversial), but it isn't equally great for Michelle Kwan to "be herself" (by being diplomatic)? IMO, Michelle would sound as absurd trying to be Johnny-esqe (i.e., controversial) as Johnny would be if he tried being Kwan-like (i.e, diplomatic, or PC or polite, or use whatever word you prefer).

Well, you're right in that the two have their own "style" and it would be odd to see one act like the other. Weir prefers to be outgoing and candid; Kwan prefers to be more quiet and private. Nothing wrong with either one, and yes it would be odd to see them switch personalities. Weir's better off being candid and Kwan's better off being PC. For the latter, being PC is a good thing for an envoy, so that position fits her well. Weir doesn't have to please anyone, so he can afford to speak his mind more.

This is actually from a different feature than the "Sports Games" show in the title of this thread.

If anyone missed it, the screenshots ILoveTodd just posted are from a recent segment of the "My Wish" show on ESPN where the TV network works together with the Make-a-Wish Foundation to help seriously ill children fulfill a special dream.

Here Michelle meets a budding young skater who was stricken with a brain tumor. The operation saved her life, but she was left with serious disabilities. Her dream was to meet Michelle Kwan.

Dani loves ice skating and has for a very long time. She was starting rehearsals for an ice show when she was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma in 2004. I vividly remember how excited she was to be get the chance to wear one of those sparkly outfits and to be able to get out on the ice. She was starting to show an aptitude and real signs of promise when this all started and she loved it.

She's one of those kids who if she loves something than she wants to do it all the time. We never had to force her to skate because she wanted to be in the rink all the time. Watching her smile on the ice is what made it a joy to bring her to the rink to skate. That was robbed from her, but for at least one day she got it back. She had that smile and excitement that she deserved and wants so badly and Michelle Kwan was the conduit.

For that I will be eternally grateful....

I can't say enough how gracious Michelle was to Dani. From the moment we arrived and she walked out to open the limo door for us, I was impressed with her kindness and grace. She was a total class act and went out of her way to make sure Dani was enjoying herself....

Michelle is one of the most beautiful women ever. Her features are so natural and warm.

I don't think any figure skater is outspoken, and that goes for Johnny, too!

There are things Johnny will not open up on, and all the others skaters, too.

The European boys, Plushy, Joubert and Lambiel do open up from time to time and it is about skating which is what one wants to hear(read). Never any word from the Asian boys.

I don't think they are obligated to open up, and if so, it should only be about skating. I do think some skaters like(need) attention on their mundane lives.

I'd like to see Meissner regain her championship form. However, I won't be devastated if she doesn't. This is a transitional period and nobody really stands out to me. Last year's worlds was so bleh and disappointing. Let's wait and see.

Do you mean 2006 Worlds? That was kind of bleh in Ladies because only one skater did well.

But 2007 worlds, how much more exciting could it have been? We didn't know until the very last score was posted who the winner would be. Miki, with a great LP, held on by a mere fraction of a point against a charging Mao coming on like a freight train. Yu-na Kim and Caroline Kostner burned the house down in the SP!

going into the stadium that night, no one knew for sure. It was quite a big question for lst place.

With the boys, Joubert was just so far ahead, it was less exciting and so was his FS. There was some suspense for Daisuke winning overall.

No real suspense for Pairs and Dance.

No, I meant this year's. Very uninspiring and uninteresting. 2006 Worlds was lacking some serious starpower, but at least there was suspense in Cohen/Suguri/Rochette. Meissner came out of nowhere in that one. And the other worlds (02-05) were nice and suspenseful.

Just like US Nationals...after two absolutely thrilling ladies' events (03, 04) and one mildly thrilling ladies event (05), here comes this snoozer in 06, and a close, entertaining event in 07, although like 06, to me it totally lacked that anticipation that makes your heart race.

MM - How could you dare to mention Kwan without a whisper of Cohen. You know how some people consider forum talk as hype and hype should be even steven.

In all seriousness, I haven't seen Kwan and Cohen much in GPs, Worlds and now Nats. And for my honest opinion, I don't miss them in competition. Thinking about it, though, I think the present field of Ladies has left them behind.

It's a Mao/Kim World now.with maybe a new challenger from the USA in 2009,
