How tragic would it be if she just withdrew? At this point she practically has no chance to podium/make top 4. Since RusNats is in the middle of nowhere she also has no chance to get new boots. So, what use is there in skating the FS if it‘s very likely she might injure herself? She did the SP, she showed she‘s not backing down, that she isn‘t making “excuses“. Zagitova stays in the National Team and she didn’t even skate at Nationals. Surely they could do the same for Zhenya, she deserves it just as much. Of course, her detractors would go mad but they do anyway. Now it might be better to look after her health. I know Zhenya is Zhenya but a FS is so different from a SP and she was visibly struggling today already.
 
I hooe they consider changing the layout of the fs (or even better, wding) doing 3s-3lo is a death wish with her broken right skate. I would repeat toeloop instead of loop and do 3s-3t

I was thinking the same. Loop combo on a broken skate...? Please just no. It’s not worth it. She‘s not making the team anyway. She should rather focus on doing Averbukh‘s show and then getting to TCC asap to keep training for next season.

Making top 4 would again depend on her and the others . I would have no problem at all with her withdrawing and I would say the majority of the people would not fault her. But this is zhenya we are talking about so I have no idea if she says yes I withdraw or if she says no I will fight with everything I have
 
I know many of us are upset about Zhenya's scores, but could we please not bring the other skaters into her fanfest? There is a whole Russian Ladies Thread where these discussions can be had instead.

I would rather focus on the positives in here, such as Zhenya's courage, and the fact that she placed as well as she did, skating with a badly broken boot. She got the second highest Program Components score of everyone, receiving marks of 9 and up from all the judges bar one for her skating skills, which is astonishing considering the circumstances, she got a positive GOE on everything bar the combination, and has left herself still in the hunt. She and Brian will doubtless figure out how to tape the boot for better support and stability for the free skate. It's not an ideal situation, but she is making the best of it, and doing so well. May she skate safely tomorrow!

I haven't watched the SP back yet, but didn't Medvyedeva get a standing ovation all through her K&C when she was first frantically trying to free her foot from that cursed boot before acknowledging the arena? People felt for her, and not out of pity, but out of pride!

Hello, Vemvane. I think it is fair to discuss Zhenya's score here, relative to the others. I don't see anybody bringing other skaters down, rather stating their observations about the judging. Also, lots of us know that there cannot be any real discussion of anything related to Zhenya in RLT; soon enough certain posters will derail the discussion and point out that Zhenya did not bring her old coach flowers when she left.
 
There really aren't enough adjectives to describe Zhenya. She is the ultimate badass warrior queen. Not many could pull off what she just did. She is utterly incredible.

I couldn't sleep because I was so worried for her, and it will be the same tomorrow again. This is such a terrible thing to happen to her last minute and I'm just so sad for her after how hard she's worked.

Zhenya is used to dealing with huge levels of adversity, but it just seems so unfair. But she never complains, even when everything seems to be working against her. She even goes as far to apologize to us after her skate. We don't deserve her. Russian fed doesn't deserve her.

They threw PCs and GOEs and Level 4s at everyone like candy (even when they had botched spins and StSq or obvious URs) but once Zhenya came out they decided to judge differently.

Frist. Zhenya is amazing for skating through literally a broken boot. What a champion!

Secong, the judges can just......... such harsh scoring while they ignored everyone else's mistakes. I guess that's the Eteri effect....I'm pissed off. I guess RusFed had dumped her, such idiots

Don't be daft. Fans are just fans, useful for holding banners or throwing plushies. But no matter how we think of ourselves, for the skaters we are far less important than their home club, federation, sponsors, business and society contacts, show promotors. Outside of the small world of figure skating, nobody knows their names.

Sambo-70 is Medvyedeva's home club and Russia is the federation she proudly represents.

Yes, and Yevgeniya will be glad to retreat to the Averbukh show once back in Moscow after the stressful National Championships. No matter the outcome, she knows she has given it her all and the nation will respect her for it.
 
After recent events, any qualifying to describe Zhenya's courage, strength, determination and fight is few. I strongly believe that there isn't other skater who loves this sport as much as she does. I think it's her huge love for this sport that keeps her standing.

Regarding qualification, I honestly always thought that Zhenya was going to be underestimated in these nationals because it was necessary to do it. What I never imagined was that they were going to be lucky ? that a skate just broke so they could do it blatantly.

The score wouldn't be rubbish if all of them had been qualified with the same criteria. But as there is clearly a differentiated criterion for Zhenya so it's a rubbish score.

I sincerely believe that RusFed has long since stopped supporting her and is demonstrating it. Because they don't need her anymore. RusFed doesn't care about ladies single skaters, they consider them disposables. For RusFed it's more important a coach who constantly produces athletes that make them win medals and when one of them break is thrown and replaced by another. ET created a system that for her (in terms of prestige and money) and for the RusFed suits and works for them and the RusFed is delighted to deliver the national team in her hands. Only ISU could stop this by raising the age to compete in senior but they have also surrendered to this system and are delighted.

This whole matter of the broken skate is very confusing and hopefully it was a coincidence. Otherwise it would be very serious. And the fact that Zhenya went to the store with her coach to buy others is even more incredible. It seems to me that in such a case your Federation should has helped her and clearly didn't.

We know that Zhenya is a fighter but I also ask myself how many vicissitudes an athlete endures in her sports career. Because for three seasons she has been in a constant test with hardly any respite. I know that she isn't the only athlete who goes through this of course. There are thousands of examples in the history of sports. But the issue is that in addition to her career as an athlete, the athlete represents a country. But if that country which the athlete gave so much glory and raised the flag so many times and many times alone (not only in sports terms, but also political) betrays you at the most important moment of your career and doesn't lose the opportunity to show you that they don't need you, is it worth continuing to represent it? I'm not Zhenya and I know she would never consider this option. But do you think that if there wasn't a broken skate there wouldn't be the same criteria to rate her differently compared to other competitors. It's impossible to fight against such a system. And it's useless to represent a Federation that doesn't deserve you and doesn't want you to represent it. For me the message that the Federation is giving Zhenya is very clear.

If Zhenya's goal is to reach the Olympic Games and continues underestimated in the next nationals, even without a broken skate and skating incredibly, how is she supposed to get there? Even if she doesn't reach the Games, she may also won't be able to make the team either in Euros or in Worlds. And I don't talk about this season because this season was ruled out even with a healthy skate. I speak of the future. Is it worth that the sports career of an athlete of Zhenya's level would be reduced to some GP events and nationals in which will finish all her seasons? If I were Zhenya I would seriously think about competing for another country because ultimately what is at risk is her sports career. But I am not her...
 
Competing for another federation (if they can agree on a transfer sum in the first place) will perhaps allow her to be national champion of that country..

It will not change anything in her chances to win a World Championships. Yes, she may get to compete in the Olympics one more time, but without medaling prospects, unless Russia is banned from participating.

I think Yevgeniya is too clever to even consider this move.
 
The individual video of her skate is up on 1tv's YouTube channel, and watching it, I was struck by how well she handled the boot situation. She looked nervous at the start, biting her lip and blinking often, but once the music began, she appeared to go into a very calm space. I think it impacted her performance to a degree, as she was, understandably, very focused on getting through everything, sort of more inward looking, as it were, though I mean she still got 9.18, so it clearly didn't hurt her too much in the judges' eyes!

What I really appreciate is how she maintained speed, smoothness, and knee-bend throughout. She appeared to jump more from her legs, and landed on soft knees, and somehow did that with a broken boot. Her spins were lovely, fast and centred, and her flexibility in the I-spin (is it an I-spin, or is it a Y-spin?) was impressive; I don't understand quite where she lost the levels on her flying sit spin, as that looked very good to me, but what do I know about skating and judging? :laugh:

Also, her SP is clearly loved, as it's at 23k views after only four hours. Way to go, Evgenia! Good luck for tomorrow - may she skate without problems, and without pain!
