2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

There is no magic pill.

Excerpt from a large interview with Tamara Moskvina

....

-- In the world of figure skating, How do they react to the doping scandal , with Russia being involved in it? Didn’t they look askance at our skaters?

- I have been working in this sport for a long time, I communicate with many, I speak English fluently. And never a single foreign athlete or trainer allowed himself to hint: they say you Russians use doping.

What can I say? Everyone sees how our athletes work, and this removes the questions. Well, think about which pill will increase the synchronisation of rotation and artistry, help the execution of complex throws?
Will give inspiration to the number so that everyone thinks it's like a small performance. This is achieved only by tremendous effort.

The fact that we are faced with such misfortune is, among other things, a consequence of increased competition in world sports. Today, in order to win, many not only seek to show the result, but also look for the opponent’s weaknesses, monitor the development of pharmacology. And we missed a lot in this regard.

How did it happen that many Norwegian skiers are asthmatics, American gymnasts, tennis players have a bunch of illnesses and all of them are legally taking drugs for which we are being punished? Well, sick people cannot run on ski's, set records and win gold at the Olympic Games!

Attacks on Russia are excessive, it’s another matter that after a fight they don’t wave their fists. All that remains for us to do now is to work for the future: to attract science, to train lawyers, specialists who are well versed in these problems.

-- If in terms of doping, our figure skating is beyond suspicion, then serious passions boil inside. Why, in your opinion, did Zagitova’s statement about a pause in her career cause so much emotion?

- Of course, now our sport is at the peak of popularity, including and thanks to the media. The level of female single skating is especially high. Real stars are made out of these pretty girls, their every step is considered under a magnifying glass.

But this still does not explain the hype surrounding Zagitova’s decision to leave the sport for a while. Yes, Alina is an Olympic champion. So what? She has the right to do what she wants - to participate in tournaments or to suspend performances. It is necessary to respect her choice, and not run a negative, tell each other nasty things.

-- It's not even so much about Zagitova. Comments on the topic of her future ended in a conflict between Yevgeniy Plyushchenko and Tat'yana Tarasova with the skater's coach Eteri Tutberidze. Mutual accusations sounded, phrases were whipped at each other...

- It’s not very clear to me why such a tough exchange of views is public. Statements are published on social networks and are widely discussed. This immediately provides food for conversation, and overgrows with strange details. It seems to me that these disagreements could be discussed inside the rinks, and not put on public display.

-- A number of experts believe that the essence of the problem is as follows: Tutberidze simply turned her attention to younger athletes, and Alina felt superfluous.

- Only those who work in her group can know about the motivation of the coach and her student. We see only the external side of what is happening, and the real reasons may be different. I repeat, no need to invent anything. If the participants of this story deem it necessary, they themselves will tell everything.

-- Today our 15-year-old girls divided the pedestal in women's figure skating. It seems that they do not leave older athletes any chance.

- Young people have not only “fired” today. Remember the same 15-year-old American Tara Lipinski, who won the Games in 1998. But today the level of complexity of technical elements in figure skating is such that even at 25 years old it becomes more and more difficult to become a champion. At this age, you simply physically cannot perform high jumps with four turns. But for 14-16-year-olds, they are easier.

Is she planning on comeback? She have all her triples back and even euler sal combo too. She has yet to show her 3T combo though.

I hope so, if she manages to get back all the combos, looking at the most recent results at nationals, she still has chances to finish in the top 10 and get GP spots. (as long as RusFed gives her a chance, wasn't there a comeback rule?)

I think it's too late for Anna to use the comeback rule. It'd be nice to see her in competition again, though.

(Gracie rushed back into competition because the clock was ticking and her comeback GP spot would have expired had she waited longer.)

The first GP season she could potentially be considered is the Olympic season GP series, though. And we all know how crowded it will be. Getting in the Top 10 at next years Nationals where all the Olympic eligible skaters will be already competing, after missing several seasons? Sounds tough...

I don't think an international comeback is realistic at this point "at her age", sadly. Also, the post-22 generation is already on its way, and it looks like they're not going to be any weaker than the ones before them.
A domestic comeback, maybe, if she's satisfied with that. Gracie is doing it after all.

Good for Anna and Kseniya, former rink mates. Hopefully there is no real antipathy between their trainers, as both Panova and Davydov are listed in that ROC document. There is even a mixed team event, where strategising is important.

I wonder why Anna switched mid-season though?

I wonder why Anna switched mid-season though?

We all wonder, but there is no information to be found on this. Nobody from the press apparently asked? Over on some Russian boards it was suggested due to restricted circumstances in Snow Leopards, but that's what I've been hearing all the time.

Still, in Frolova's case it seemed for the better, she shined in Nationals.

Now we must wait for Tarakanova to return to the ice, her not mentioning figure skating in her New Year's resolution vlogs, nor mentioning her rink mate Sinitsyna, makes me wonder wether everything is still OK.

An interview with Eteri: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtftUeOouLM
(Edwin, your turn. :))

I've tried interpreting the YT vid, am still waiting for the proof of my interpretation.

In the meantime, found a reasonable transcript of a this alltogether not very interesting interview, since Eteri Georgiyevna has to weigh her every word.

" I rarely experience joy. " Eteri Tutberidze - about working with TShK, her daughter and 'cosmos' in figure skating

Interview with the coolest trainer in the world.

At the end of December, the Russian Championships were held in Krasnoyarsk. In the women's tournament, the first three places were taken by the students of Eteri Tutberidze: Anna Shcherbakova, Alyona Kostornaya and Aleksandra Trusova. Tutberidze told Channel One about their skating runs, preparations for the European and World Championships, as well as about her daughter.

Sport24 highlighted the most interesting.

Impressions from the skating

I would like them all to skate perfectly. And see what it brings. And not when they have mistakes - you understand that this is not quite the struggle we expected. Somewhere Alyona dropped those 2-3 points. Well, Sasha, in fact, did not participate in the struggle today.

Sasha wanted to go for the triple Axel in her short program. We just decided that it is not quite ready yet. It was impossible to get any other layout and try to catch up from there. And in her free program, we simply removed the quadruple Salchow, she is able to completely collect this set.

What did Alyona say after her short program? Nothing like that. In addition, in her short program, she performed all her jumping elements perfectly.

Was Anya perfect? No, she lost about 3-4 points on her Flip - had a step out. And the last spin series could have been done a little better.

About competition

I think that internal competition helps them. It happens when someone is not in the mood, after seeing others jump, it charges them with energy. External competition (separation between Trusova's 3rd and Tuktamysheva's fourth place - 20 points)? The fourth place skated imperfectly - let's start from there.

The three of them ended up on the podium - well, that's good. But at the World Championships with such skating runs, this may not work out.

About preparation for the European and World Championships

Probably, nothing will change in the preparations, we will continue to work out the elements. And somewhere we decide which elements we leave and which we add. And the fact that the three of them take the pedestal ...
Probably, they still have some kind of safety cushion. That is, there are technical elements, that even with an error remain well rewarded.

How do you feel when in one tournament one of your students performs well and the other does not?

It's like riding a rollercoaster - up and down. You have time to rejoice and immediately get nervous for the next athlete, you are upset. Honestly, those errors that have not worked out remain in the soul more. Now it’s a shame for Sasha somehow, I can’t say that I directly rejoice for Anya and Alyona. They just did their job. Could have been a little better. That is, I rarely feel joy. I just do my job. In order for me to experience joy, it is necessary that all three of them skate cleanly.

If this happens, there will be nothing to strive for?

This is nonsense, when you will not strive for anything? Having skated cleanly once, you will understand that the next time you can’t have any mistakes at all. There is even more pressure on you.

What are Anna, Alyona and Sasha doing - something cosmic?

Stop. I can’t say this is some kind of cosmic achievement. Don't elevate us. If we take the World Championships, the girls are already jumping. And the next girls, who are a little younger, are already jumping. Is there a limit? Let's watch together. We will see.

Ahead I see a job. Every day there are some surprises: something is working out, something else isn't. Before the free program, Anya didn't have any proper training at all. Sasha, on the contrary, skated very well in training. Maybe this gave her some kind of excessive confidence, while Anya was collected, realising that her elements did not work out. You can’t relax here.

Is there an ultimate goal in preparing Alena, Anya and Sasha? And what could be this ultimate goal? It's like a squirrel in a wheel. You can’t stop, you need to twist this nonsense.

About daughter

I can’t say that I’m directly dealing with the fact that I’m not only a coach, but also a mother. I manage - this is when everything turns out. Not everything succeeds, somewhere I want to help my daughter to find her place in life. Well, in general, I do as best I can handle it.

I was not able to become Diana’s coach. Because of emotions. It seems to me that I scolded her a little more often than other athletes, because I began to raise and train her at the same time. It distracted me.

Am I really worried about Diana? Of course. Now we are apart. If, for example, after training, she does not answer my calls or SMS, then I call Gleb, or the coach. I’m trying to understand, because you’re starting to cheat yourself. I just understand that this is sport. Of course, I am anxious, I worry.

About her coaching approach

Am I very strict as a coach? This is a myth. True, I'm not strict. Frankly: there is probably some harshness in words. I can punish with a word - that's true, yes. Not hands, no action needed. But it does work. With girls. The boys are a little different.

So, Frolova and Sinitsina at Youth Olympics. When and where does this event take place?

I have to admit that I wasn’t a Frolova fan during the jgp, but happy for her that she did so well at nationals. Although, I dislike the new program.

The first GP season she could potentially be considered is the Olympic season GP series, though. And we all know how crowded it will be. Getting in the Top 10 at next years Nationals where all the Olympic eligible skaters will be already competing, after missing several seasons? Sounds tough...

A domestic comeback, maybe, if she's satisfied with that. Gracie is doing it after all.

Well Russia has plenty of domestic competitions and similar to Leonova she can do Challenger competitions. She along with a lot of Russian female figure skaters are going to have to answer the question for themselves as far as continuing their investment into the sport if they are 'okay' with possibly not ever getting a shot at major international competitions. I think she would be a hard sell to put on any type of 'postseason' competition like Europeans/Worlds/Olympics - she had way too many meltdowns.

When are the 3As going to start training for Europeans, is there any info on that? I assume in a few days after Orthodox Christmas?

Just checked the Euros schedule and there's not even 3 weeks left. :eeking: I thought it was a bit later for some reason.
