Yuzuru Hanyu Will Compete With His 2017-18 SP & FS At 4CC

I personally think it’s a mental/sentimental reason. His Origin performance at Nationals may have been weighing in his mind and the Otonal-Origin combination is now tied to the heavy feeling of losing. I don’t think he’s switching to win per se - as in, not because it will gain him points but more to get the bad feelings out, set a new pace for himself. There wasn’t enough time between Nationals and 4CC to train for a new program so I guess Chopin & SEIMEI which are ingrained in his body was the way to go.
Imo the R word may or may not be dropped depending on how things turn out in these last two competitions of the season.

I’m not sure why it’s tied to losing. Sure he lost Nationals and the GPF .... although isn’t it some superstition that he needs to lose twice a season before winning well a big event? Still, he got a personal best at Skate Canada and landed 5 quads at the GPF with Origin. And had three SPs that were 109+.

I get changing things up. But this is hardly a “it’s broke so fix it” scenario.

Not sure why he thinks the SP should be swapped because it’s not like the elements would change. And Otonal is already pretty similar to Chopin.

Personally it makes little to no sense to me. Other than him wanting to test out the system to see if ISU still favors him or not OR just wanting to relive the two programs that won him his historic second olympics on the 2 year anniversary in the same country. Either way I think it's a bit dumb to not give Origin and Otonal as much mileage as possible before his big challenge at Worlds in a month but whatever he's the GOAT so I'll still be highly entertained, thank you Mr. Hanyu!

Well, at first I just rolled my eyes as this seems a bit superfluous at this point... but then I can't help but think about the retirement rumors some of you are hypothetizing and that makes me feel uneasy. I didn't want him to leave the sport on painkillers at a B event.

With that combination of programs, he earned 330.43. To compete with Chen, who consistently scores around 330, he needs to skate at the highest level in his career, which is why reverted back to the Olympic programs. Hanyu is even thinking about introducing the quad Axel.

Legacy wise he is going for a full crown in figure skating- like winning the grand slam in tennis: having gold at every major event in your field. In tennis it is used in terms of one year (season) competitions. When it comes to figure skating-winning gold at every major event is an achievement of it's own. Yuzuru had never won 4CC in his entire career. Now's the time. And if you think it is easy then I would like to remind you that he's the only top skater out there who is risking getting very close to the coronavirus, the one that is especially dangerous for those with weak lungs. Some may think he's an... umm, not so smart given his asthma. But he loves to compete and have it all. So he goes there to get the gold and lift the spirits of people up. That is his mission after all.

The corona virus is not an epidemic in South Korea. Japan and South Korea are at a similar risk level so I don’t think they’re particularly worried about Korea being rampant with the virus.

This is so funny. Y'all talk about Chopin and SEIMEI as if he's skated to them at least 20+ times, but reality is he skated to SEIMEI a meek nine (9) times and Chopin some 14 times (might be 15 as i just calculated in my head and the 14-15 season is a bit blurry).

Yuzuru can do what he wants and if he wants to/needs to bring back Chopin and SEIMEI to get his mojo back then he will do that. I love skaters that don't care bout what others think and just follow their own vision.

On another note, if i'm being completely honest i've been feeling as if Origin just has bad energy for a while now. It just seems to suck the life out of Yuzu everytime he competes with it and that's not something i want for him. Everytime his scores has gotten lower and the judging worse. I feel like going back to these programs could be a way of recharging his mentality and finding the fun in competition again. I know it certainly would be for me as a fan.

If he isn't discarding Otoñal and Origin forever and will come back for them later then it could also be a way to avoid feeling fatigue from the programs. If you reach a block while doing creative work, work that involves a lot of emotion, then it can be good to take a step back for a bit. I'm not sure how Yuzu feels obviously, but like i said, as a fan Origin has felt awfully heavy lately.

This is Yuzu FOURTH time in just about as many seasons doing Chopin.

Sure. But in 2017-2018 he did it at ACI, Rostelecom and Oly. Hard to call it a season.

There’s nothing new to bring to it.

And how do you know it now, before 4CC?

IMO going back to so many repeats over the years has actually stagnated Yuzus artistic potential.

Have you seen his Mascarade? :scratch2: If not, probably you've watched Origin and Otonal. Did you honestly notice ANY stagnation?

Probs that is the reason why Briand Gislain is wearing the mask- as well as people surrounding him at Korean airport. Safety measures applied for a good reason. Even flying in airplane with 1, just one contaminated person is risky.

Even if his 4A is 10% better than what we saw at GPF from my eye that’d still be a fall. His blade was hitting the ice sideways on that jump back then. Definitely a downgrade.

I’m sure sure someone will land the 4A one day but if Hanyu is changing his programs for that jump... well I’m skeptical but very happy to be proved wrong.

Briand Gislain confirmed that Yuzu have chosen both programs by himself after the Nationals. He's aiming to win WC, that's when we shall see Seimei completed with 4A. Yuzu worked with SLB on brushing choreo in January. Current layout on 4CC for FS will include 4Lz, 4S and two 4T.
He's been skating both Origin and Otonal for so long out of deep respect to his both idols. Even so he couldn't make those programs of his own. Coming back to Seimei and Chopin he wanted to have the music that comes from within, overflows with his personality.

You make it sound as though the scores are just random numbers that judges decide to award. That's not true.

He's not getting the highest scores of his career with these programs because he's not performing them at the same level of quality as he did in years past with other programs. It's not a conspiracy.

Conflicted about this. On one hand, I'm glad that Otonal and Origin are gone because I've never quite connected with them; Chopin/Seimei are much better programs IMO (even though I would have loved to see LGC again). I perfectly understand why he keeps repeating programs/going back to previous and trusted programs and I admire Yuzuru's willingness to challenge himself after everything he has accomplished; however, I think he has now reached the peak of artistic maturity and as a fan I would selfishly love to see him challenge new programs and different genres more than anything else (same goes for every other skater, especially those I like). That said, good luck to him at 4CC, I hope he can skate two programs he can be proud of and complete the grand slam.

This is a different scoring system though.

He’s gotten 48.47 and 96.40 PCS at Skate Canada 2019. Which were comparable to the PCS he got at the Olympics.

The rest is dependent on elements which doesn’t change based on the program. Sure an additional comfort level with the program may make it easier to do the elements but as mentioned he’s performed this season’s programs well, multiple times.

Missing jumps at the GPF/Japanese Nats had less to do with the choice of programs and more with just the fact that he made errors, as all skaters are prone to, and was doing more ambitious content. If he just needs a familiar set of programs to regain confidence, great. But it’s still been there, done that. Just because they got a certain PCS back in 2018 doesn’t mean they’re automatically going to get the same PCS — if anything some judges might ding it for lack of originality, playing it safe, and using something familiar so he can reel off jumps instead of bringing something fresh and innovative.

Wow, is it actually “only” 14-15 times?!? That would represent about 25% of his senior short programs, in a career so far spanning 10 years.

I know he got some flak for creating both programs this season already in the vein of Chopin/Seimei... but at least they were not literally the same programs. I do miss his PW and LGC phases when he showed more versatility but evidently he has a specific brand/style now.

Yes it's ONLY 15 times (forgot WTT when i counted the first time). It might represent a high % (if your number is even accurate as i haven't calculated it myself) because he happened to skate it during two season's where he competed for full ones (except he skipped the challenger in 2014 due to back/knee pain).

Shoma skated to Turandot 19 times but i don't see anyone constantly ragging on him for repeating that program, and it's not as if his programs are very diverse otherwise either. Other programs that were skated to a large or equal number of times as Chopin and SEIMEI that i haven't counted yet are Malaguena by Javier and Messing's Chaplin. Again, no one blames them.

If you're going to complain about skaters repeating programs then do it for them all and not a select few.

If you think Otoñal and Origin bear any substantial similarity to Chopin and SEIMEI then i truly don't know what to tell you, you're a lost cause. They're wildly different not only choreographically and musically, but emotionally.

Turandot 1.0 (8 times): US Classic, JO, Skate America, GPF, JNats, 4CC, Worlds, TCC.

Turandot 2.0 (9 times): Lombardia, JO, Skate Canada, IDF, GPF, JNats, 4CC, Olympics Individual, Worlds.

That brings it to 17 instead of 19. Please give me these 2 (two) additional competitive Turandots from Shoma if you can find them, I don't like missing his skates. Also after the high number of complaints at Shoma during the Olympics Season about Turandot 2.0 having a worse music cut and composition compared to Turandot 1.0, they are 2 (two) different programs.

Yes people are wearing masks but it would be the same going into Japan or most other places in the world at this point since it's possible a contaminated person could be on a plane going anywhere now.

You're right, it's 17.

I thought he did the free for the team event at the olympics and didn't remember that the free was cancelled during IDF in the 15/16 season. I just counted it off the top of my head so appologies.

People might have complained about the quality but not about the repeat itself (at least not to the degree they rattle on Yuzuru). To that point SEIMEI will now be a 4 minute, not 4.5 minute program so it will also most likely be different. That's not stopping anyone from complaining it seems.

The point still stands. People should be consistent if they complain. I don't mind when anyone chooses to repeat programs, it's not exclusive to my fave.
