2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Agree with your assessment, especially about Daria and Maiia. They don't have the "it" factor and their jumps are not even that good. They may improve next season but the good ones typically shines in their very first international season.

Kamila is just so special in any field, not just juniors but even compared to the 3A, Alina and Evgenia, Liza, Elena, etc. She has jumps, spins, skating skills, and musicality which is such a rare combination. I wish they had measurements at this comp, I'd love to see how the stats of her 2A compares to Daria's and Alysa's. Quads aside, I think that's her best jump. I thought Daria was just OK; she has more "maturity" than the other girls, probably because she suits this dramatic music more, but the skate wasn't anything more special than we see from the others at junior nationals. As for Maiia, I really don't see what Eteri sees in her, she's a good skater and would be great in any other country but she doesn't stand out in the sea of talent. Among the top juniors in recent years, I think she is one of the weakest. Even going back to when the talent pool was more shallow, I thought Yulia, Elena, Evgenia, and Alina were all more impressive their first international seasons and were more interesting. All I could think of was how unfortunate that Tarakanova never made it to junior worlds. And also Gubanova and Nugumanova. But it goes to show that you have to deliver when it counts.

In her first Junior Season Alina didn't qualify for international starts at all... She Finished 9th at Junior Nationals behind... Polina, Stasya and Sonya to name a few. She lost by 50 points to a winner (Polina).

BTW does anybody know in which country the full ladies SP video is NOT geoblocked? I wonder if that is not a mistake, because the other videos are not blocked for me, just this one, and I used about ten countries via VPN but with no success (incl. Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and I don't know what else :) ).

Didn't they remove full Ladies SP video? I watched it yesterday evening after it was live, so it was there. Now it isn't...

For now it doesn't write "video was deleted", but "video is blocked in your country because of copyright blahblah" :)

I like that on one hand people want "slow building of style", not to hasten trainings, too much pressure on young children and all this, but just when, according to them, somebody doesn't "shine" immediately, he is not worth support and attention.:noshake:

For me personally Maiia and Daria were nervous yesterday, which cost them several points, but that didn't hide they belong among the best juniors and personally I still liked them more than korean girls (I'm not saying they should have received more points than Haein Lee, just liked them more).

Also, Eteri most likely wants all 3 spots from Olympics. How many girls does she have with Ultra C right now? 5 of them are eligible and one (Kamila) has 'perfect' age. Nobody knows what happens to 3A 2 years from now.

This is a very interesting statement. A few pages earlier in this thread, there is a long discussion about declining 3A performance and that puberty and growth are responsible. Now Kamila, who will be as old as 3A today in 2 years, is in "perfect age". Amusing.

15 years of age is the ideal age for Olympic Gold in coordination sports: still young, light and lean, physically strong, and reasonably free from injury, but IOC doesn't want to decorate children in their prime summer and winter sports (artistic gymnastics and figure skating). Esp not Russian children coming from state sponsored specialised children's sport programs.

IOC apparently doesn't have problems with very young swimmers (i.e. 13 year old girls in the bodies of 18 year olds) or Chinese boy divers?

I just wanted to point out the contradictions in the arguments, which I find really amusing. Here is an interesting article on the subject. Unfortunately in German, but there is Google translator.

Had the olympics been on February this year, 3A most certainly, would have swept podium.

Performance of Alexandra and Alena (who is 16 years old btw) might have declined compared to the start of the season, but they are still better than they were season ago.

We don't know how well will 17-18 years old 3A compare to 15 years old themselves and Kamila, but so far, 15 seems to be peak age for most. Sure 3A are unique and their careers can develop in any way, but their future will remain uncertain for anybody (including Eteri) until it comes.

Maiia has an „it“ factor for me.
She’s so elegant, considering she’s very tall. The positions she hits, the way she moves just looks so pretty and unique.
I think she’s just a unique skater to see.

I feel like it's incredibly unfair to compare Kamila, Daria, Maiia to the 3A currently and even the 3A last year. They're 13. While the 3A were juniors last year and dominant it was their second international season. They were 14 (Anna and Sasha) and 15 (Alena). In their first season, 13 year old Anna was recovering from a broken leg and missed the entire international season. Even in their second season, Anna and Sasha were still struggling to stabilize their quads - both Anna and Sasha frequently UR and fell on their quad lutz in particular. Evgenia didn't win the JGP or Junior Worlds until her second season - she took 3rd in her first season, a perfectly delightful and wonderful result and well within the grasp of both Daria and Maiia. (In fact, Daria already has the JGP bronze). As for Alina, in her first entire international season, she didn't even qualify for any international starts. In addition, the whole sport is evolving and getting more technically challenging. Kamila and Daria in particular have that "it" factor and Kamila has been as dominant as we've seen for first years of eligibility - she's special

I feel like you forgot to mention that Sasha also dominate at 13(she is still the youngest to win JGP, JGPF and JWorlds) and won all the starts including JWC with 2 quads.

Agreed. 3A and Alina before them set the junior bar very high (but in two seasons) and from every new russian junior girl people now expect they will even that bar immediately since their first start. It requires time and a lot of work to be that good, it's not a magic. Also, people shouldn't put unnecessary pressure on the 13 y.o. girls with the comments like "you're not that good as 3A, what Eteri sees in you..." And then those people blame Eteri for being callous. Where is their decency :confused2:

Just give them time and try to suppress prejudice. Daria can perform programs with deep emotions, Maiia is elegant and subtle and despite their stage fright, expectations from the audience and all those comments, knowing that there will be always someone saying "but Aliona is so much better", they still go on the ice and try to do their best. They are brave, braver than people stitting behind their computers and holding their smart phones who understand everything from their sofa.

I didn't. That would be more a comparison with Kamila who is having a dominant season so far. I was focusing more on Daria and Maiia who are receiving completely unfair criticisms. However, that further proves that contrary to all the hand-wringing that all 3 are more than rising to the challenge set by the "3A" and Alina and Evgenia before them when they are in fact more than matching their results. And they still have one more year before they are senior eligible. In addition, all of the previously mentioned skaters have struggled at times - whether in junior or senior starts. Let's just enjoy watching their beautiful programs and appreciate the talent we have the privilege of watching.

Also, the level of competition from other countries has risen a lot this season compared to the past 2 years at the junior level. In 2017/18, the only skater with the technical firepower to beat Sasha/Aliona/Nastya at JPGF was Rika, and she wasn’t as consistent as she is now. Last season there was almost no one to challenge any of Sasha/Aliona/Anna - I don’t think anyone else was able to break 200, although Yelim got close at a couple events. This season we have Haein and Alysa (not to mention Kamila/Daria/Maia’s fellow countrywoman Ksenia), plus Young You when she skated at the Yourh Olympics all breaking 200.

So yes, maybe Daria and Maya aren’t as consistent as Sasha, Anna and Aliona were, but also their competitors have caught up.

Congratulations to Kamila, Daria, and Maiia on 3 fantastic skates today!

Kamila was beautiful, but I have to say I'm definitely ready to see new programs from her, especially a new short. Can't wait to see what she brings to the table next season!

Daria's free skate was just stunning. Some may say that she's too young for Je Suis Malade, but personally I loved it! That's a program that I'm sad to see go, and I'm so glad her last performance of it was clean :luv17:

I would say that Maiia definitely proved that she deserved to be here! Such a great quad attempt, you can tell that it's right there and I have no doubt that she'll land it in competition soon. She's another one that I'm excited to see new programs from. She did the same two programs for two seasons, I'm sure the poor girl is ready for new ones too

So happy they were all able to end the season on a high!

Tutberidze girls didn't disappoint once again.

I applaud at the preparation there, they all looked extremely prepared for the event in a tough field cause Alysa has the triple axels, and i thought Seoyeong Wi also was very strong here.

Even Maiia Khromykh despite she's out of the podium, she made huge improvements compared to her JGP season and i hope they keep working with her cause the quad salchow was once again fully rotated and very close to landing, but most importantly this time she fought for the rest of the program. I enjoyed also the steps sequence to the music, with no rushed movement.

Kamila Valieva, best quad toe in Ladies Figure Skating, she skates with insane speed and super difficult transitions, her spins also the best in the biz. I wish sometimes she just takes a bit more time to listen to the music and sell it more, idk if it is related to lack of musicality or too much contents in the program.

Usacheva i thought she was really fab in the free, everything felt easy smooth, and there was commitment to the performance. (still facial expression she could give a little more with such a dramatic song)

No comments About Kamila, please FS gods, keep that girl healthy, she can be better than anything we have ever seen.

Darya was flawless today.

Maiia didn't medal but I think that 4th place for her is definitely a success! Also She got that quad done without deduction :agree: most importantly for her age, she is definitely improving.

I think this will be busy offseason for all 3, Kamila most likely is going to learn another quad ( at least, Daniil's comments made me think so), Darya will definitely try to get 3A and probably, should be close to it considering how good her 2A is and Maiia will have enough time to get 4S stable and possibly add another one in program(maybe even another quad :wishfull thinking: ).

VUX may not be as good as TSHK but start definitely looks very promising for them :agree:

All top 6 girls were amazing today, but for me most amazing today was Maiia. As Tolstoj wrote, she fought till the end today and mainly, her elegance is to me same or in some moments even above Alena Kostornaia level. For example her step sequence today was just  Her superelegant long arms and legs are tools of victory lol. I so wish for her to stabilized that 4S and take medals because she absolutely deserve it.
