It's true, but I think cold is more efficient as virus spreading stopper than sun as virus killer.
The expert on TV asked about end of pandemic before May was sceptic because of upcoming spring temperature.

EDIT: love "Daily New Cases" chart in China!
:clapper::clap:

Wow, brakes, that is some kind of link! Lots of good info on seven countries. And more. The US has 160,000 respirators it can use at any given moment. If we dont flatten the curve, we may need 742,000. I too think getting the kids out of schools, social distanceing, etc will buy us time till the warm moist air helps with the virus .BTW, if you dont here from me over a number of months, I will be in a better place, but I will let you know if it looks like I wont make it....cant get my wife to social distance....

Medicaid eligibility varies hugely by state. I technically have insurance through the exchange since I don't have any other option, but with a $15,000 deductible (so basically, I don't have much insurance at all), and so do lots of others. Just because one "has insurance" doesn't mean they can afford to go to the doctor. 8.5% of the US population has no health insurance; in Texas that's 17.7%. You have gold standard insurance, which is by no means the norm. I guarantee you that 8.5% of the population isn't going without insurance for fun.

ITA. I think free market healthcare may have worked at one time when we had free county hospitals such as in the 1950s, but making profit off of sick people is no longer an option for pharmicuticals and the hospital/doc industry. If you can believe this, my doc of 30 years is hanging up her stethoscope cause Kaiser Permanentee bought out the owner of her practice and they are firing all the scribes so she has to do all the data entry herself and they want her to work weekends. I hope we try something better, even if its wrong....

But most people have insurance/government coverage of one sort or another. People age 65 and over can get Medicare and supplemental insurance to cover deductibles and copays, if they want. People with low income can get Medicaid. Everyone can get a policy under Obamacare. I have employer-provided insurance with a $350 deductible and 20% copays. My maximum out of pocket is $1,500. It isn’t completely free to me—I pay through payroll deductions (about $150 a month for family coverage). If the system gets stressed, it will be because some people choose not to buy insurance. That is not the government’s fault.

I am an American who, thankfully, currently lives in a country with Universal healthcare. So, I understand how the US system works and how universal healthcare works. The idea of paying more than 10 dollars for any normal procedure is absurd in most industrialized countries. Even a non- essential MRI cost less than 300 USD here in Taiwan. 1500 USD is a lot of money for most people. My parents have insurance but are still required to pay high deductibles for any extra tests or procedures. The reduced rates that hospitals have for those without insurance are still absurdly high. Not to mention, the unbelievable cost of staying in the hospital for any length of time. I almost never went to the doctor in the USA (aside for yearly health checks which are essentially free) because I am relatively young, healthly, and didn't want to pay 70 dollars for a doctor to spend 5 minutes with me and tell me I had a common cold or the flu . In most cases, this is fine. After all, doctors can't do much to stop normal viral infections. But, if a country is trying to stop a pandemic not having free access to healthcare for all is a huge barrier. I am not making a political statement. I am just stating facts.

Five more hours on hold... if they could have just called me instead of automatically moving me to another flight...or provided a cancel flight/refund option. I don’t think I am getting the flight money back. They called for the Canadians to stop traveling aboard this morning, so most everyone who was going to travel over the spring break is also trying to cancel their bookings. It’s seems pretty hopeless.

That sounds miserable.

Travel is great if everything works out. Once it goes wrong, it is miserable.

But the perception seems to be that the majority of Americans have minimal or no coverage. That is simply not true. I am not alone in having excellent insurance. The biggest employer, the federal government, provides even better coverage than mine. I have worked in the public and private sectors and always had good coverage at minimal cost. And Medicare covers a huge cohort of the population—those age 65 and over. Yes, there are some (less than 10%) without coverage. But not all of them will get the virus and the government is apparently going to provide some resources during the crisis. Sorry for going so far off topic.

You aren't wrong. Most people do have medical insurance. I worked for the federal government in America and had good insurance. But, the copays were still high and that type of system discourages people from getting the healthcare they really need. And, yes, Americans and the American healthcare system are often stereotyped by international individuals in a very inaccurate way. The healthcare available is very good (among the best and most advanced in the World) if you can afford it. Having lived all over the world, I will say that zenophobia and stereotyping is, unfortunately, universal.
However, my mainpoint is the same as before: not having universal healthcare and universal health leave will likely make this crisis worse in America than in similar industrialized countries. I can only hope it doesn't spread in South and Southeast Asia, Africa and South America where from personal experience I can say that good healthcare is out of reach for a much larger percentage of the population.

Anyway, this is off topic. I am really sad that I won't be seeing my favorites performing at Worlds. There are so many wonderful programs this year.

Millions of Americans are uninsured, and even more are underinsured. I have seen the estimated combined percentage of these two groups to be approaching 50%. I am fortunate to have amazing insurance, but my situation is not the norm for most.

I've never experienced anything similar. Every event is canceled. I fully understand the reason behind these cancellations. Still I consider it is a lot of hysteria around. Why all the toilet paper disappeared from all stores. I understood the hand sanitizer sold out, but toilet paper??? It's a flu-like disease, not dysentery.
I have no idea what figure skater do? I guess the go on with a summer like training.
I hope summer will come as long days and sun's UV light will kill most air born viruses

People buy toilet paper for everything. Winter storms, hurricanes...but honestly at this point I’m worried about supply chain, in particular if in the US Trump puts restrictions on Interstate travel. In St Louis casinos are closed, all schools and colleges, all gatherings over a certain number of people. Libraries are open for book checkout but not public gatherings, book signings, etc. The Y is open but all youth sports, older adult activities, etc are cancelled. I expect the last 2 to change within a couple of days and be fully closed. I wonder how long the mail will run. I’m getting scared, and I’m not an alarmist.

Cat shows have cancelled the rest of the season. I doubt dog shows are much behind.

I suspect his cancellation had more to do with potato-face Dutton testing positive. But it could be a moot point anyway, as now one of the Sharks players is being tested.

I googled Dutton and I think the article said he was hospitalized, even though he isn't feeling ill. Are all Australian coronavirus cases hospitalized? Here in British Columbia we have had a total of 64 COVID-19 cases. Number currently "being treated in acute care in hospital": two.

O M G! I just returned from a month long trip to Denmark, Greenland, Canada and New York and I can't believe how quickly this whole thing has escalated in all these areas (minus Greenland) since I was there just a couple of weeks ago. Had I planned my travel just a few weeks difference, I would've been stuck in Europe, unable to get into US. And all the museums and theatre places in NYC I went to would be shut. A lucky escape if there ever was one. I feel blessed.

I am sad for the Figure and Synchro Skaters due to compete at the Worlds, I hope they get their chances later this year or next year.

No, you get hospitalised if a) you have severe symptoms or b) you're a bigwig like Dutton or Tom Hanks (to put it as simply as possible). Most people with mild symptoms, which is most people with the virus, are being instructed to isolate themselves at home until cleared of the disease. It's one way to help keep limited hospital resources (and let's be clear, in the face of a global pandemic for a virus with no vaccine, every country has limited hospital resources) freed up for the urgent cases, just as in BC.

I Think that1 cold is not a virus spreading stopper but the opposite if you look at the countries mine as in Germany included, Spain, Italy and Germany have a high amount of cases of this virus. And and even in Spain it's not totally warm at this moment, hile most cou tires with a warmer climate are sill doing mostly ok .I think it's also that countries who have warmer climate often the people living there have a better immune system than people who are living in countries were it is often raining and cold etc,

From what i gather, the warm weather helps because there are less indoor crowds, people tend to spend more time outdoors and there are more open windows.
I listened to an expert saying that even an open window on a bus or an office can decrease the spread dramatically. Since you can't open windows on airplanes, malls, concert halls, etc., we'll have to keep avoiding them for some time probably. And crowded ice rinks, unfortunately.

It's literally the other way around. People living in colder climate are more "hardened up", while people who live in warmer climate are getting a cold at every little cold breath of wind. Not a sign of a good immune system. And viruses spread faster in warmer climate ( as we can see, most Corona cases are in warmer countries)

They should have moved it to Calgary! It’s minus 21 right now, and a snowstorm! Perfect place!
