2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

But didn’t she hold a press conference to announce her break? Not disputing your speculation that because her coach stated they have chosen music that she’s coming back for the competitive season. But seems she’d make another official announcement to hold another press conference?
At any rate, it’ll be an exciting season if she does decide to come back

I doubt Alina wants to do another big press conference in studio with some news person about coming back or retiring. When she did that a few months ago to announce she was stepping away from the game for a little while taking a break if you will that did not go over well and I'm sure she hated doing that. I think we will have to wait for video footage in a couple months to see her training with aliona and Anna to know she's coming back.

It wasn’t a press conference. Alina was pretty clear that so far she plans to only
miss 1 competition - russian nationals (with subsequent euros and worlds as a consequence). She never said anything more.

Nice musical scene from Russian film "Ice 2" - hockey player father lost his figure skater wife who'd gone through severe injury, so he doesn't want his daughter to come anywhere near the ice:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDuhDLITGUY

I've even seen the first movie. From the sport point it was crap but as a romantic film it wasn't bad.

I've found out about the movie thanks to Ice Age Kids, where Ovsyankina&Orechov skated to the music from it (with Averbukh's choreo) and Tarasova then used her time to tell the world how bad the movie is

Happy 18th birthday to our reigning Olympic and World Champion! :thank:

Are we expecting queue of oligarchs lining up before Alina's door from now on, lol? Just kiddin! :agree:

Hey you beat me to it! 😜 Those are exactly the words I would have used. Well I would have added defending to reigning. :) Happy 18th birthday Alina! 😎

Alyona talked about this in her interview, so yes, you could say that - if you live in a parallel reality, that is :)

Sorry for being skeptical but the impression i have about all of this is that at this point Eteri has such an influence on the federation and media because of the status they gained over the years, you can't freely call her out, and say that they forced you to switch or retire, i bet they are so smart, it's all written in the contract these skaters sign before joining, like an NDA.

Basically those who do criticize the team, are either those skaters who were immediately trashed, so their competitive career is done already, but russian media and supporters are very smart at downplaying everything, making it seem like that skater is just jealous. (which also could be true, but you can't just dismiss the whole thing just because it's not all rainbows and unicorns)

Here in a western country, after an interview like the one Polina Shubodreova did, which had several big claims against the team, there would be immediately investigations against the coaching club, in Russia it always go the opposite, defend the coach, trash the skater for speaking up which i think is unfortunate.

Anastasia Shabotova said that that all Tutberidze students take pills to get consistency, basically entire Russia bashed her, scores at following competitions started to drop significantly and now she competes for Ukraine. Before that comment her career was mostly on par with Anna Frolova btw (who got 2 events in juniors), after she was pulled out of the junior team and forced to switch country in order to compete at international events. Very unfair situation there, yes it could have been just a mistake, but an apology was enough, you can't destroy her career immediately after.

Like i said for Sambo70 skaters i bet it's behind some sort of NDA, though probably put in a shady unfair way since you can praise the team but not criticize it (if it is a real NDA you shouldn't be able to talk about it at all, positive nor negative), or maybe it's just threats and fear put on the athlete.

It's curious that the recent exodus happened while Tutberidze was not in Russia.

why stop there? Eteri rules ISU, IOC, the world!!!

parallel reality, indeed

About this comment I think the same that mr. Keating thought about prof. J. Evans Pritchard in Dead Poets Society.

Blessed are those who believe ... A. Griboedov "Woe from Wit"

According to what you support, I should just believe the worst variant of everything that somehow concerns Eteri's team, even when in fact no accusation is brought.

E.g. Polina Tsurskaya told the media that her leaving Eteri was very friendly, they talked for a long time about everything and all.

But, be careful, flanker. Eteri rules the media, so you have to rethink everything that was said. The truth probably is that Eteri was chasing Polina through the streets of Moscow with a stick and whip, caused her severe injuries and ripped her beloved tissue box apart. And then of course the media received the task to cover it up with completely fabricated interview...

People, you truly know how to spoil the day. :rolleye:

Regardless of the power Eteri has or not, RusFed obviously stand for that team the most because that's the most efficient team they have, if it ain't broke don't fix it, that's the impression you get from the outside.

Skaters are taught to say the things people want to hear, there are all sorts of taboo topics in figure skating, that's still a problem in general, not just in Russia, very few skaters speak up for potential issues they face.

But again, it was unfortunately to see the amount of backlash the skaters who dared to say something against, received, whether you agree or disagree shouldn't really matter. Immediately dismissed as false accusations, despite you can't even prove it's false.

Well we could really say the same for those who believe the opposite.

Kanysheva from one of the best talents in Ladies figure skating, 3rd at JGPF to badly injured as soon as she switched clubs and now she is in ice dance. All of this in not even a year.

I found extremely laughable at those fans who put the blame on Panova for this.

I don't blame anyone, not even Panova, such things happen, but Aliona herself said she's suffered her injury during the autumn 2018, so before she even joined Eteri. I find extremely laughable to hold Eteri responsible for the things that happened before she could even have any influence on it.

Well, of course, Eteri has the power so wshe forced Kanysheva to lie, right?

There was this theory that Egor Rukhin, the Zhilinas, and SAsha all waited for ETeri to be out of town to make their switch. But what you are saying is really correct in a sad sort of way. What Volkov said about how when students go to TEam Tutberidze, they were taken in and given the chance of a lifetime but when they leave they are betrayers and will never again reach success.

Like will you believe that both Sasha, Evgenia, and both of their families have zero gratefulness or respect to Team Tutberidze for making their daughters two time world champions that they wouldn't care to let them know properly or give a bouquet of flowers before they left their coaching team? And do you really believe that they left in the exact same manner, not answering phone calls, not telling the team, doing it so improperly that they "cease to exist." Like I don't think they're lying, but there is an exaggeration and choosing of information shared here. Why is the exact same narrative that was forced onto Evgenia being forced onto Sasha the minute she decides to try another coach? Is it forbidden to leave your coach in sport? I think not!

It's a sport and injuries happen. Alena is reluctant to talk about it, I believe it could've been a minor injury that happened in Nov 2018 but then got aggravated to the point that she couldn't jump without pain anymore. Quite clearly her retirement statement was written by Eteri, the part about the dream of learning a quad toe especially. Yeah, you trained all these years so you could do a quad toe in training and then retire due to injury and pain. Yup. I don't think that Eteri forces anyone to lie, at least not often. But there are many things that her students are not allowed to talk about. The truth is that her PR is very strong and sometimes it shows, but the truth also lays in the fact that she produces very strong skaters and her political influence makes and breaks skaters - see Medvedeva, Tarakanova, and possibly Trusova in the future.

What narrative are you taling about? So far the only common thing was "not answering the calls" in Sasha's case. Egor's and Veronika's (her sister was never trained in Khrustalnyi, though people like you talk about it as if she was Eteri's student) cases received hardly any comment.

So, people are rejecting the idea that Sasha's goodbye words were written by someone else (which I'm not claiming they were), but Aliona's words were surely written by Eteri. Tell me about the double standards and alleged "non-critical Eteri admirers" :laugh2:

Exactly! i think skaters have all sorts reason to leave a coach, and their careers shouldn't end because they left, or shouldn't be forced to retire because the coach told them they are no longer competitive.

The decision should be on the skater always, and they should have the freedom to leave even when they are at their best shape, even if that means they will train with a competing club.

It's interesting you mention that cause Aliona started practicing quads as soon as she switched to Tutberidze, in spite of the injury, as we saw from the clips on instagram few weeks after the change.

She competed at the Test Skates, with the injury.

If that injury was that serious, maybe they should have told her not to practice quads and to rest when it was still possible to recover.

Interesting point how Alena got injured before she joined eteri. I had forgotten about that.

How does it affect anything was she in town or not? Like... would she physically intervene or what was going to happen?
People left Eteri with Eteri in town. What difference does it make now?
