LOOK! Mirai Nagasu new long program

^

To me, the only thing that looked "juniorish" was some of the basic stroking in the second half of the program.

But the whole program was wonderful. It held my interest from beginning to end -- something I can't say for most senior performances. She even got away with the "doll" movements in the middle. That could have been hokey, but Mirai carried it off just fine.

According to the protocols, her last triple Lutz was downgraded. The technical specialists really have their work cut out for them, to have to make calls like that in every program. She also got a time deduction for going over her music.

Mirai grew about four inches since last year (from 4 foot 7 to a towering 4 foot 11, LOL), but she didn't gain any weight that I can see. Now she is so thin that she looks tall.

The double Axel is her prettiest jump. The triple loop/double loop was nice, too, especially the entrance to the first jump.

Edited to add: Thanks to Tagmats for posting this to You Tube and to Taan for the link.

Well, if you can't be juniorish when you're fourteen and skating at the junior level...then when?

I thought it was wonderful! She really got into the character of the program.

I really don't know how that would play in Seniors. Those upper level Ladies are threatening each other with 3As and quads. But in Juniors she can't go below gold.

I have to look at the PCS scores. I don't think she deserved less that a 50+ total in PCS.

She really was under-marked on the PCS.

The second Lutz was definitely under-rotated, unfortunately. You can see the skid of the blade on the ice clearly in real-time. Still, nobody is going to beat her on the Junior Grand Prix.

At Nationals I'm sure she will be similarly under-marked, unless she adds a Triple/Triple.

Well, she is a junior skater and skates at junior level. :)

Fair comment, but perhaps that's why I almost never get very excited about juniors - because they look like what they are.

Kim Yu-Na was an exception for me, but Mirai Nagasu isn't (yet).

For me it's often the opposite. The kids are really into the competitive aspects of the sport, they are excited about finally landing that triple loop, the world is their oyster and the sky is the limit.

Many senior programs seem to be just checking off the elements.

(Actually, most junior programs are like that, too, LOL. But it's more of a thrill when you are 14 than when you are 24.)

I love it. I could watch her all day. Her jumps look so EASY, especilly in the begining if the program. I see that she is putting the combos at the end, for the points, glad to see that. I think that this girl should be trying triple axels. her double looks effortless. Sweet program that suits her and i think is very original and clever. Really held my intrest as mathman said. I think that she is going to the moon.

Lots of potential and talent! A real delight to watch. The only thing lacking is speed, but definitely top notch for the junior level.

Lovely program. It has everything and she makes all of her elements look effortless. I think that she is very polished for a junior skate. She is a joy to watch.

I unfortunately do not have the access to Youtube at the computer that I am using today. But I just wanted to celebrate her victory! She is a delightful skater. I am happy that she won!

She really was under-marked on the PCS.
I think she got pretty much the going rate for outstanding juniors in international competition. Compared to Caroline Zhang's record-breaking junior Grand Prix scores from last year, for instance, the PCSs for the LP were

Mirai (2007 Lake Placid), 47.77
Caroline (2006 Mexico City), 46.06
Caroline (2006 Taipei), 45.41.

Straight 6.00s is a total of 48. Moving up to seniors, it's only a little higher (straight 6.75s = 54).

Mao Asada (2006 Skate America), 53.36
Yu-na Kim (2006 Skate Canada), 55.20

(Not their best performances, however.)

I couldn't agree more! I thought the program was really entertaining and you got a real sense of the music from her which is extremely impressive given her age! I also agree that the doll moves were endearing - she's at exactly the right age to be able to carry these things off. For such an early season competition i think its even more impressive that the program is as ready as it is and that she stood up all her triples. An excellent start to the international season for her.

Thanks for the clip! I could not agree more with Mathman´s words above.

Shhh! Don't jinx her. ;) People thought Zhang was going to be unbeatable last year, but then look what happened at Nationals.

I think Flatt could easily beat Nagasu in JPG. She jumps and she has style too.

Flatt is a very good skater, but I think Nagasu is better. Mirai's jumps are better, higher and more secure and has better speed and basic skating skills. And Mirai's spins and spirals are fabulous. Besides, performance wise, I think Mirai has an edge over Flatt.

However, Flatt has a triple-triple, so all in all it should be a good competition. :agree:
