My impression is that many of these skaters are not ready for competition. Too many mistakes. I'm kind of disappointed with Duhamel & Buntin. Buntin is a weak jumper, and their lift is very very scary. I guess this is due to the fact Duhamel is not as small as Buntin's former partner.

I'm pleasantly surprised by Langlois & Hay.

May add more if i have time.

With Duhamel & Buntin, I think they're not doing bad for being together for only three months! And in Meagan's class, not even skating for pairs for that long. The throw jumps and death spirals looked quite good. The spirals need polish, though their lines match better than some might have expected. The footwork and sbs spins obviously need more work, and they can only achieve better synchrony by training together for longer.

The lifts... well, maybe Craig should work out in the gym a bit? And maybe Meagan can watch her diet a bit? Actually, I think Meagan looks like she lost a little weight since her singles days. It's not easy to lose weight when your body has been comfortable at the same weight for a while, especially if you've been okay as a competitive athlete at that level. If she lost more weight, maybe it'd be hard for her to continue landing the jumps and so on?

Yeah, it's a dilema. That's why I believe this pair won't advance too far. Those lifts were damn scary, and they were only some simple ones. It will be very difficult for them to get some level 4 lifts... Just my thought.

Joannie's jumps were AWOL. It does not look so hot for the entire Canadian national team.

Sorry - what does AWOL stand for?

As for the topic...
I'm disappointed that Jess & Bryce kept both programs, I figued they could have changed the short program at least... and there was that weird double fall, but since it's at the far end, its cause remains a mystery (it looks like Bryce caught his skate in something and then tripped Jessica, who was possibly holding his hand?)
I'm anxious to see how Craig and Meagan will fare this season, I think it's a little early to pronounce myself on them (since so many teams didn't seem to be up to their regular standard).
I was also surprised by the fact that Jeff used a 3T-3T as his short program combo...

I can't wait to see these athletes in the GP series, and notice how much they improved since now (or not, but hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised :) )

Cody Hay has really improved in the last two years! At this point I think he's approaching the level of Bryce Davison, something that I would not have thought possible two years ago. He might even be the stronger partner in the Langlois/Hay pairing now. Their speed as a team appears to have improved since last year.

I have a somewhat different opinion than netnuts regarding Duhamel/Buntin. I am surprised they are as good as they are at this point, especially considering that Duhamel was off due to injury for a month or two. I initially had real concerns regarding their matching of line, but it's much better than I thought it would be, and their stroking already matches well. For a new team, they also have good speed (which would have been expected, giving that both of them are powerful skaters). Their lifts will come with time.

It looks to me like Duhamel is not pulling up from her core in the lifts. No amount of weight-lifting is going to help Buntin unless she starts to.

There is a lot of ambitious straightline footwork in many of these programs. What inpressed me most about Langlois and Hay is not just how much he's matured, but how they went for the perfect timing on many of their elements, even when they failed on them, instead of changing the timing and doing the move when they felt comfortable.

Rochette's choreography is exquisite. In Buttle's, I I wish they had used "No, Pagliaccio, non son" instead of "Vesti la giubba," but I love how the footwork goes on the big music. Patrick Chan has really grown into his body. He uses his whole body very well. Beautiful jumps from Mabee in the SP.

My question is, is anyone going to watch Langlois and Hay's SP without thinking of Flyin' Ryan? I won't. ;)

I was most disappointed in Jeffrey Buttle. The choreography seems to lack a sense of the music, particularly in the step sequence, IMHO.

I thought Chris Mabee looked pretty good. That first jump combo looked great.

And, of course, Virtue and Moir look good as always.

I suspect that is the placeholder him going for the 4T/3T. Intersting that he appraoches the combination round a corner like most skaters set up edge jumps. Eldredge is the only other skater i can think of that used to set up his quad attempts coming round into them rather than the straight line approach most of skaters use for the quad.

I also found the clips to be really useful for assessing things like speed and height that you don't get with moving camera's and cutting from one to another on TV. Joannie's jumps looked like they had no spring in them at all. Dube & Davison looked quite slow and laboured in both of their programs which is bizarre if they've kept last year's programs - you'd expect more polish from them with programs they already know really well.

I think Jeff's program looks beatiful - he really does move exceptionally well.

I loved Tessa and Scott's OD but one question: Will they be able to use that kerchief as a prop in actual competition? Not sure of the rules for national and international competitions.

I absolutely loved Tessa's dress! But it's funny...I kept wondering if Scott borrowed his costume from Ben Agosto (remember his and Tanith's 2005 FD: http://www.belbin-agosto.net/4images/data/media/73/30.jpg) Just a silly speculation on my part. :)
