JGP # 4 in Tallinn (EST)

I'm glad Cannarozzo was able to pull up to a respectable showing in the free skate.

Gosh, I hope Lenko/Islam hang on to a medal here. Does anyone know if a bronze here combined with their silver in Lake Placid would be enough to get them into the JGP final? How many dance teams are in the final, anyways?

Isn't it the top 8 point earners that go to the JGP Final? So I suppose sometimes 2 silvers might be enough, and it really depends on the circumstances. If many teams earn 2 golds or a gold and a silver, it reduces chances for the others...

Yuki Nishino....? Has she already been in a JGP this season? If not, does anyone know her next assignment?

I think she's one skater to watch.

Hi! I think she's fresh from Novice and this is her first JGP,
She seems to be another jumping bean.

I'm surprised her layback spin got a Level 4 plus 2points.
Somehow, she remainds me of "young Arakawa".

yay to Jinlin Guan and Chao Yang of China for medaling  Hope to see more of them in the future.

Thanks, Kypma. I guess i'll just have to wait and see. I really do hope they make it. I think they have potential. Last season Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje (CAN) just missed the final, and they won two bronzes. On a different note, I read on the skate Canada website that Diane Smiett (sp?) (good for her, BTW, to move up from 14th after the short) landede a triple triple combo. Is this true? If it is, good for her, because other than Rochette, who's 3/3 hasn't made an appearance in 2 seasons, none of our other Sr. ladies can land those in competition.

The protocol did say Diane tried a triple toe - triple toe combo in the long but the second triple was deemed underrotated by the caller. It is nice to see that she went for it however. She did land 2 triple lutzes in the long as well.

Too bad she really bombed the short. She popped the loop into a single and fell on the lutz and the lutz was deemed underrotated.

Thanks for the info, nadster. I think it's great that she at least takes the risk. As for the other results, congratz to Velenosi/Fernandez. Too bad they couldn't hold it together for the win, sice they were less than a point under in the short, but a silver is a great way to start the season for them. As for Lenko/Islam, i'm happy they won the bronze, albiet probably by default, since they placed 5th, 4th and 4th in the CD, OD and FD. It's a shame , because I thought they had a shot at winning here. Looking at the protocols, it seems to be their PC marks that are holding them back more than anything else. Good for Chock/Zuetrlien, though. I've seen them live and they're very entertaining and technically capable. It seems that North America is dominating ice dance this season in the JGP's. The US has won three of the events and a bronze, and Canada won the other gold, along with a silver and now a bronze. Canada's done well in pairs too, with gold and silver in Lake Placid and a silver here, while the US had had incredible showings in the singles events. I never expected North America to have this type of dominance in these events.

The pairs result is out.

Looks like the Chinese pair Yue Zhang/Lei Wang I recommended a while ago did really well. They won the free skate and jumped from the 7th place after short to a podium finish. If they were competing in the last group, they would have probabaly won the event.

All of their big elements except twist are senior level. 3T, 2A+1A+SEQ(should be 2A+2A), 3STh, 3TTh.

Three photos of this pair.

It is said Bin Yao really likes them and believes they resemble the younger Z/Z. Keep a close eye on this pair.

The ISU has published updated JGP standings with the results from Estonia added to the lists. In dance, Samuelson/Bates lead, Lenko/Islam are second, Crone/Poirier are third, and Chock/Zuerlien are fourth. This pretty much demonstrates what I mentioned in my previous post. I would love to see all four of these teams battle it out for medals in the final. In pairs, Khodkova/Slusarenko and first, Sheremetieva/Kusnetsov are second, Jones/Jackson are third, Velenosi/Fernandez are fourth and MacCuish Evans are fifth. In mens, it's Jinlin Guan, Chao Yang, Adam Rippon, and Brandon Morz in that order. In ladies, it's Mirai Nagasu, Rachel Flatt, Yuki Noshino, and Chrissy Hughes in that order. It will be interesting to see how these standings change with the next few events.

For what it's worth, here are the top scoring skaters so far in each discipline. For those that have had two events, I listed the highest one. Placements in parenthesis.

Dance:
1. Samuelson & Bates (USA) - 171.84 ( 1 - USA; 1 - Vienna)*
2. Monko & Tkachenko (RUS) - 169.23 (2 - Vienna)
3. Crone & Poirier (CAN) -159.87 (1- Romania)
4. Riazanova & Guerreiro (RUS) - 151.93 (2 - Romania)
5. Chock & Zuerlin (USA) - 150.99 (1 - Estonia)
6. Agafonova & Dun (UKR) - 144.41 (2 - Estonia)
7. Pajardi & Caruso (ITA) - 143.45 (3 - Vienna)
8. Lenko & Islam (CAN) - 142.79 ( 2 - Lake Placid; 3 - Estonia)**
9. Monko & Khaliavin (RUS) - 141.33 (3 - Romania)
10. Vykhodtseva & Shumski (UKR) - 141.02 (4 - Vienna)

* This score is from Vienna
** This score is from Lake Placida

Ladies:
1. Mirai Nagasu (USA) - 159.14 (1- USA)
2. Rachael Flatt (USA) - 154.65 (1-Vienna)
3. Yuki Nishino (JPN) - 144.12 (1 - Estonia)
4. Kristine Musademba (USA) - 137.16 - (2 - Vienna)
5. Alexe Gilles (USA) - 132.67 (2 - USA)
6. Chrissy Hughes (USA) - 128.80 (1 - Romania)
7. Blake Rosenthal (USA) - 127.67 (2 - Estonia)
8. Alena Leonova (RUS) - 126.50 (2 - Romania)
9. Jenni Vähämaa (FIN) - 125.43 (3 - Vienna)
10. Svetlana Issakova (EST) - 124.28 (3 - Estonia)

Men:
1. Adam Rippon (USA) -185.94 - (1 - Romania)
2. Brandon Mroz (USA) - 185.33 - (1 - Vienna)
3. Jinlin Guan (CHN) - 184.81 - (1 - Estonia, 2 - Vienna)*
4. Artem Borodulin (RUS) - 175.48 (3 - Vienna)
5. Artur Gachinski (RUS) - 170.83 (2 - Estonia)
6. Chao Yang (CHN) - 166.60 (3 - Estonia, 5 - Vienna)*
7. Adrian Schultheiss (SWE) - 166.46 (4 - Vienna)
8. Ivan Bariev (RUS) - 166.92 (2 - Romania)
9. Armin Mahbanoozadeh (USA) - 165.58 (1 - USA)
10. Douglas Razzano (USA) - 157.55 (4 - Estonia)

* Scores are both from the Estonia GP

Adrian Schultheiss was really unfortunate - his score would have won Lake Placid and medaled at any other event. Luck of the draw, I guess. Same for Douglas Razzano, he could have medalled at either USA (silver) or Romania (bronze).

Pairs:
1. Sheremetieva & Kuznetsov (RUS) - 127.69 (1 - Estonia)
2. Velenosi & Fernandez (CAN) - 125.36 (2 - Estonia)
3. Zhang & Wang (CHN) - 123.77 (3 - Estonia)
4. Jones & Jackson (CAN) - 122.27 (1 - USA)
5. McCuish & Evans (CAN) - 119.40 (2 - USA)
6. Pflumm & Pottenger (USA) - 118.55 (4 - Estonia)
7. Khodkova & Sluisarenko (RUS) - 116.93 (3 - USA, 5 - Estonia)
8. Sergevja & Glebov (EST) - 116.84 (6 - Estonia)
9. Dong & Wu (CHN) - 116.61 (7 - Estonia)
10. Steele & Johnson (CAN) - 116.84 (8 - Estonia)

The events were incredibly unbalanced. Khodkova & Sliusarenko won bronze at Lake Placid, but the score I posted above is from Estonia. In fact, any of the couples who finished 4th to 8th in Estonia would have won bronze at Lake Placid.

Thanks for the run down, Oleada. Now can anyone tell me how many leading contestants are officially permitted in the GPF? I believe it is 8 but too lazy to look it up.

Trying to figure out how the total placings would give contestants the nod to the Final.

And yes, Oleada. I think the Feds should try to play the strategy game.

Joe

It is the top eight. You can see the leading contestants here:

http://www.isufs.org/events/jgp2007/jgpsmen.htm

http://www.isufs.org/events/jgp2007/jgppairs.htm
http://www.isufs.org/events/jgp2007/jgpsdance.htm

The ISU uses placement, not score, but I like looking at both.

Oh, and I totally agree about the strategy game. I guess it's harder to do for Junior GPs than Senior ones. But I noticed in the Senior assignments that Canada was pretty good at it, and the US was well...not.

I read some review of the two Chinese pairs Huibo DONG / Yiming WU and Yue ZHANG / Lei WANG. Both have only started practicing pair skating since last year, but I heard Yue Zhang & Lei Wang are quite promising. They have mastered all big tricks such as th3Sal, Th3T. They will use 3T and 2A+2A+SEQ as sbs jumps. It's said their consistency is very good in practice. However it's hard to say how they will fare in this competition since they've never even competed before! Long program is 'Coppelia' . Keep an eye on this pair. A couple of pictures:

Huibo DONG / Yiming WU are not as good as Yue ZHANG / Lei WANG. Their sbs jumps are okay, but throws are inconsistent. Both girls are very young though. Bin Yao is coaching these two pairs with the help from an assistant coach.
Thanks for the info! Here's what 'Eislauffan' posted about the two Chinese pairs' short programs and free skates in Estonia:
Zhang/Wang 41.92 [SP score]
A medley of happy march music
2Tw, 3thT step out, Lasso one arm, 2A fall/she

Zhang/Wang 81.85 [FS score] – 123.77 [total score]
Ballettmusic, probably Coppelia
3T, 3thS step out, 2Tw, Lasso one armed, fccosp change out of sync, 2A^1A, 3thT nice, 3Li. A little rough around the edges but some good elements

Dong/Wu 43.59 [SP score]
Spente le Stelle (some modern arrangement)
2Tw, 2A good, 2thT, pcosp slow, lift shaky. Stiff overall. The coach of the Russian team Sheremetieva/Kuznetsov said that they were very strong in practice. So maybe they were too nervous!

Dong/Wu 73.02 [FS score] – 116.61 [total score]
Exodus
3T he stumbles w/both hands, she does 3T^2T, 2A nice, 2Tw, 3thS good, 2thT, Spiral she slips, 5Li shaky and she falls on the exit. They definitely can do much better than that.
