Kamila Valiyeva: “What happiness is for me? It is when all my relatives and friends are to be healthy "
World Champion in the Juniors Kamila Valiyeva won the fifth stage of the Russian Cup in Moscow. The pupil of Eteri Tutberidze, Sergey Dudakov and Daniil Gleikhengauz performed a short program with a triple Axel, skated a free program with two quadruple Toeloops for the first time in the competition, not counting the other elements.
After the skating run, Kamila told how working on the triple axel went, why she and the coaches decided to change the costume for the free program, how she took the news about the cancellation of the Junior World Championship and where she is going to celebrate the New Year.
- Kamila, at this competition you skated your short program with a triple Axel for the first time. Did you purposefully prepare yoursel for this skating run?
-- Yes. At this start, the task was to try to skate with a triple Axel, in order to do it more confidently at the next competitions.
- Your triple Axel from a difficult approach, with your hands up ....
- Because for me it's even easier to jump with arms up than without. We simply did not change the approach into the
dupel (double Axel), and it turned out that it was already inconvenient for me to enter the jump without arms up. When I did the Axel without arms up, I got this error that I was "falling out" of the arc, to the right and flying at a tilt. And with arms up everything is more or less balanced, because you screw in, fly normally.
In principle, I am glad at these competitions I managed to skate with the Axel, because I worked on this jump for quite a long time, with breaks.
- Can you tell us more?
-- I tried the triple Axel for the first time a couple of years ago, when I wasn't yet even in junior level. I worked a little on it, tried it, tried it, then stopped. Then we resumed work in September after the junior Grand Prix in Chelyabinsk, but then at training I did not land it very well, and we abandoned this idea. I entered, entered into the Axel, but for certain reasons did not begin to train it.
All this time I was jumping the double Axel as usual, without arms up. And before the start of this season at the training camp in Novogorsk, Eteri Georgievna told everyone: "Let's jump a
dupel with arms up." Three years ago I jumped it with my arms up, then I forgot about it. And she said that it would be easier this way, and later it would be possible to enter the triple Axel with arms up. In training, I jumped a lot with arms up, and it turned out that it was already difficult without arms up.
- When did the triple Axel become more stable?
-- About a week before this Russian Cup. At every workout, I tried to do it at least once or twice, but without an entry, so as not to make a mistake, but once or twice plain. In the evening, in the second workout, it turned out better. So, little by little we have worked towards it.
- You yourself wanted to show the triple Axel here?
-- Yes, it seemed to me the best moment was to try it here, to be more confident later.
- Between the second and fifth stages of the Russian Cup, you had time to prepare. You took part in the show after the Russian stage of the Grand Prix, where you performed not just demonstration numbers, but your competitive programs, with all elements, including a quadruple jump. That is, those exhibitions became sort of a preparation for this Russian Cup stage?
- Yes, I wanted to try jumping a quadruple toe loop in the exhibition, because I've never done it. I thought it would be a good plus for me, because if you do it at the show, with the low lights, it will be easier in competition. So yes, that performance rather for me was preparation for this start.
- To feel confident.
-- Yes, after the exhibition I felt confident, but when I came here to the Megasport, I again felt insecure. I do not know why. But I went to training, immediately, as if I could not do anything.
- So there are no spectators at the competition?
-- Yes, I knew. But all the same ... By the time of competition, I calmed down a bit and went out normally. And at the training session before the short program there again was a little of this. Although I was told: there will be no important rivals, you need to skate the program ... But for me, whether there are rivals, or no rivals, it's still a competition. And my main rival is myself.
- And if we follow this reasoning, then in the free program you could handle yourself with the less difficult Lutz? What happened to this triple?
-- After previous starts, I began to think a lot about this Lutz, how to do it correctly, but in the end nothing started to work out. Even when I was skating into a quadruple Toeloop, I knew what to do, depending on how I would fly into the jump, but Lutz ... immediately panic - what to do, what to do? I realized now it is better not to think at all. I just jumped it.
- Indeed. What can you tell us about your programs now. How much more do you understand and feel them?
-- I became more confident in free skating since September at the Test Skates. In the short program at this competition I was a little tense due to the Axel, so at the next competitions I will try to be calmer and do everything more smoothy.
- So far, are you planning a triple Axel only in the short program?
-- I don’t know yet. Anything is possible.
- Your free program is choreographed to the music of Ravel's "Bolero". It was often used by skaters. How did you react when the coaches told there would be such a program?
- I was a little surprised. I thought I would be offered music with lyrics, something like "Exogenesis". And when they said: "Bolero", I almost didn't understand, I thought, how to skate it out? But, I hope, with each new start I will do everything more confidently, more smooth to make it look like skating under the Bolero, and not something otherwise.
- To better understand this music, you perhaps watched the ballet, other performances?
-- Yes, I also watched
Maya Plisetskaya, went with my mother to the Novaya Opera theater. And on the floor, I practiced this program in front of the mirror, so that all positions were clear, so that everything looked harmonious as a unit.
- You changed your costume for the free program. Why?
-- Because in the previous one there was a lot of things, on the front, and back. It turned out heavy for me. Another skirt. We decided we needed something else. No snake eyes on the back.
I like the new costume better.
- But the image of the program itself has not changed?
-- No. It is still a snake image. We just decided to do without the snake on the costume. In the short program, I, for example, portray a bird. But I don't have a bird's design in my dress. We decided to do the same with the costume for the free program.
- Although the colour of your short program's costume is associated with the waves of the sea by some peoople, your music is "Storm".
-- Yes, I've read about it. But in this program I am a bird. In the free program - a snake. Imagine doing movements that resemble a snake, trying to portray something smooth, then something more rigid, so that it looks like a snake.
- The snake is a dangerous animal.
-- Actually, I'm afraid of snakes. In my life I haven't yet had to deal with them. But I saw big pythons on TV. So scary! Better not even come close to the screen.
- Exactly. Kamila, this season, at the Russian Cup you compete at senior level, although you remain in the juniors. Does it motivate you?
-- I'm glad that I can compete in Cup with the Masters (of Sports). This is also an experience before senior season. It's better to test yourself here than at the senior stages of the Grand Prix.
- How did you react to the news of the cancellation of the Junior World Championship?
-- I was upset because I wanted to go to Junior Worlds again. Rather, there was some resentment that the championships were canceled. But it was canceled for a reason, even for a serious reason, so health is more important, I think.
- But, probably, performing in the Junior World Championships was the main goal for you? Where to look for motivation now?
-- Motivation can always be found. Although, of course, I would like to once again participate in the World Championship, try myself in international competitions, because this would be my first international tournament of the season.
- Since due to the pandemic many international tournaments have been canceled, including the junior stages of the Grand Prix, how important is it for you to participate in competitions at all, because there are people who think they should not be held?
-- I think it is correct that our federation conducts stages of the Russian Cup, because it is still a competition. Because without starts it would be very difficult next season. Because you forget what it is like to start, what excitement it gives, the atmosphere of the tournaments. If it were not for these starts, it would be very difficult for everyone. And so it seems to me that it is better to try something at the stages of the Russian Cup, even if it does not work out right away, but then you can refine, work out, and reach the senior stages of the Grand Prix, with your skating and programs improved.
- In connection with the current situation in the world, have you thought over something for yourself? For example, what is happiness to you?
-- So that all my relatives and friends are to be healthy. If there is health, then everything else is good. And this is not even related to the current situation. It's just that when relatives are healthy, this is already happiness. Everyone is alive, everyone is healthy, and there is nothing to worry about.
- After this tournament will come the National Championship, then the New Year holidays. Looking ahead, where are you going to celebrate?
-- We want to fly to Kazan, to visit our relatives.
- Delicacies, sweets ...
-- I don’t know about sweets, but my grandmother and my aunt will be there. This is good. I have not seen them for a long time, I want to come and meet with everyone.
- Will you take your dog with you?
-- Need to think about it.
- How come?
-- Now, there are certain difficulties due to quarantine. For example, we wanted to bring him here to the rink. He is small, weighs less than two kilograms, sat in a "carrier", we were not going to let him out, but at the rink we were told that we must have a permit for a dog. And Sasha Trusova, who came to the competition with her dog, had such a certificate. My mother did not argue, she said - okay, and took Lyova back to the hotel.
- And he watched your performance on TV.
-- It turned out like that.
- Thank you, Kamila. Good luck!
