2007 Skate America Practice Reports

Nice 3Z. I see the flow, but he's really slowing down toward the end of the footwork sequence. I'm not sure it's wise to let that seq fade into the end like that. Artistically it may be nice, but PCS-wise he'll get dinged for that.
It's a matter of taste, I would say. I was not overly impressed with Carriere until I saw the youtube of the recent Tokyo competitions.

Takahashi's music/choreograhy is quite unorthodox! I'm curious to see how the judges will take to it. They didn't seem to like Joannie Rochette's music/choreography last year at all, though that was unorthodox in a somewhat different way.
Innovation or unorthodoxy has never been special to the judges. There is a bonus for it, but does anyone know if it has ever been given to someone?

icenetwork now has practice videos of pairs.

I've never seen the Russian pair skate before. They look great! Besides Pang/Tong, they were the only ones skating with real connection and lyricism (though less difficulty in the transitions). I love both team's music (though P/T's costumes are :no:). The footwork in P/T's SP rocks! Awesome circular fw seq and transitions.

Ok, I finally surrendered, and shelled out the requisite funds for a icenetwork subscription ($30), as well as FSU season pass ($9). I thought it'd help me to stop fretting and get back to working -- what was I thinking?! I'm more distracted than ever. :p But at least I'm getting more info out of my web-surfing than before.

A bunch of FSU posters are at Skate America and sending in tidbits about practice sessions, costumes, music, who's eating with whom, who's running into whom on the ice, etc.

Oh, and they seem to HATE the icenetwork SA blogger. I mean she's obviously inexperienced, but she acknolwedges it, and she has a sense of humor. In other sports, like tennis, it's really common nowadays to have blogs from reporters and/or athletes describing things outside the competition itself, but skating, and skating fans, are apparently not used to the idea yet...

wacthing the clip on icenetwork, he reminds me a lot of Tim Goebel.

I guess there have not been any offical pairs of ladies practices yet, maybe today.

I have mixed feelings about what i saw of Evan's Tosca. The music seemed to be cut rather wierd and the steps looks a little repetivtive, but usually he really sells it in competition. But really Tosca is just WAY over used. I am more tired of it than I am of Carmen.

Maybe it's because of their posture -- hunched, rounded shoulders. And, they're both pretty good at jumps, and just about the opposite of lyrical...
