With case numbers worse than they were when SCI was cancelled, I figured there was little chance that an in-person nationals would happen this winter. I was somewhat hoping they'd try to do it virtually, but it's possible TSN just didn't have any interest in doing that.
Which I guess will make Challenge the de facto national championships for the year.
I think Roman said something like that in his last video. Watching Challenge made me wish that we could've had virtual Skate Canada. Shame this is the end of the season, likely.
Edit: It appears they're concerned about lack of preparation, which a virtual nationals couldn't fix

Considering they weren't planning on sending skaters to Worlds in the unlikely event that it did happen, it makes sense.
I guess a lot of skaters will keep their programmes for next year, which is a consolation
Motivation for training must be tough now.
So annoying. I live in BC. As much as I’m taking the pandemic situation seriously, I don’t think it is much of a risk to allow the high performing athletes to just compete for Nationals. Do it like NHK and make it mandatory for them to take a COVID test prior to competition. Also, make coaches and athletes wear masks during competition. The other sport I follow is ATP tennis and their top athletes still travel internationally to compete in tournaments. They did US Open and French Open last year with no spectators and were fine. Each draw for singles and doubles consists of 128 players, way more than figure skating. I have a feeling it has to do with money and fears of the restrictive BC government cancelling at the last minute. On 01/08, BC extended its sports restrictions to remain the same up to first week of February. We wouldn’t find out if this restriction can be removed until 02/05. I think the skating organizers made a decision that it was too much of a risk to start organizing for the event, only to find out on 02/05, that the restriction would remain, forcing them to cancel at the last minute and they didn’t want to incur unnecessary costs.
Oh well, I guess I’ll just use this virtual competition as the Nationals for Canadian Figure Skating. Most of the top athletes have skated already anyways. I just hope my fav, Romsky, skated well enough to win. For the ladies, it is too bad Alison and Madeleine did not compete. For the men, we were missing only a Keegan and Stephan G. Keegan already competed and did well at Skate America with his Bronze medal there. So, we are only missing two top athletes in the singles category. For dance, we have the top 3/4 there anyways and I think I can guess who would win gold, silver and bronze.

Besides covid & travel concerns, A big concern of Skate Canada is the training time the athletes have had (or mainly not had), depending where they live etc there have been various levels of lockdowns/restrictions that impact their ability to train on the ice.
Alison and Madeline are both competing at Challenge.

Very interesting video where Skate Canada called to explain their reasoning. They handled it very professionally by calling them around noon today to explain everything. Makes sense why it got cancelled. Reason for cancellation is summarized below:
1) Top reason is that 83% to 85% of skating competitors are coming from hotly infected areas in Canada. They don’t want to bring COVID outbreaks to our beautiful city that is doing a good job managing the virus exposure.
2) Certain athletes, example in Alberta, are in lockdown and have no access to train as they don’t have access to ice. So, it is unfair to them.
3) Virtual competition takes too long. It took 3 weeks to film between skaters from ONT to skaters in BC. Not enough time to do another virtual competition.
4) It is too expensive to COVID test all skaters. They were able to do it with hockey players. But, hockey has more money to fund events in comparison to figure skating.
So, that explains it. I’m still sad . Romsky doesn’t know if Worlds goes on, how they are going to select Canadian Team. In the case they do select athletes, Romsky was trying to remember if how well he skated or not. I guess they would base the selection heavily on this virtual competition possibly. I found humour in that part. Anyways, I have a feeling Canada won’t be participating at Worlds this year. So, that is disappointing.
Also, I hope it doesn’t affect the number of athletes they are able to send to Olympics. I was hoping Canada would fight this year to be able to send at least two male skaters to the Olympics.
4everchan hasn’t posted yet and I have a feeling when these posts are read, will be devasted by this news .
4everchan had an evening of important meetings and called his mom before chilling and just found out the news LOL
I am not devastated because i am not surprised.... unlike what happened for worlds where i had printed my tickets, reorganized my whole schedule and was thinking about which snacks i would smuggle into the rink but yeah... i still wish they would have considered a virtual championship maybe in the spring.. or whatever... but it seems that they prefer closing the season right now and calling it a night... they cannot possible say that challenge winners are national champions after the fact... i think that's unfair to those who had byes or played it safe to qualify (some of the newer pairs) i have a hard time computing what is possible or not... because we have athletes in the middle east competing in judo right now, and i don't think judo canada has that much more money than skate canada... but i am almost 100% sure that there won't be any worlds for canada.... what's the point??? if our athletes cannot train for nationals, they certainly cannot train for worlds... i actually believe that worlds will also be canceled...

Ok. Good! So, you expected the cancellation. I was thinking of going since it was being held in my home turf. Glad I didn’t get to the point of buying a tickets and rearranging my work schedule I guess....
In long track speed skating there are going to be World Champions and World Cups this year, all organised after each other within a period of 5 weeks, and as I understand it the Canadian Fed (but I don't know if long track is under the same fed as Figure skating in Canada) left it up to the skaters to decide whether they participate or not. For good order: these are in person championships, all skaters are in a bubble, as are officials (separate bubble), no spectators, Covid-19 tests, etc. Perhaps if the Figure Skating WC could be organised in a similar way - if it goes through - it still would be possible for Canadian skaters to attend (if they wish to go)? KMT/MM had a pretty good showing at the Challenge (which was skated earlier and after injury). It would be a real pity to miss them if there were a WC (which we don't know yet).
This is so sad and devastating but it shows Skate Canada and Canada are taking the pandemic seriously. In these difficult times we all need to sacriffice. Yes, there are always different views - we need sports for mental wellness, to take our minds out of the challenges of the day and Covid, so and so is holding cometitions, there are ways of minimizing the risk, what is fair to the skaters, individual competitors - I do think a lot comes down to or to some business/money. In the US it is a far bigger deal. This is devastating tto the skaters, skaterrs' teams, loved ones and skating fans. Everyone needs to do their best during these times. I think one of the challenges if you "do it" host the competitionit sets an exampleor precedent for other things. It is just like in many areas of North America churches are limited as well as personal businesses ie massage, hair salons. Everyone is out for themselves (usually financially). so churches will say the malls are open. Well the answer might be shut down everything then the church loses because people lose their jobs and can't suppor the church (by the way i am not an advvocate for dstroying the church far from it I justhearing everyoen up in arms - hockey parents, worried about little Joey''s hockey career or under th guise of m enal wellness - well how will little Joey feel if he gets covid andhis lungs never fully heal or life without Grandma. I get it - it sucks Covid and cancellations. I hope the skaters and those close involved take it well. Look at the pro sports with money - issues abound with covid. Not sure what the solution for picking a potential world team - I haven't seen Roman S programs but I am assumign people are saying he is lthel eading male? Nam has to be considered in light of so few competitionsand Messing has the only medal this season. I would have liked to seenGogolov.
I guess this means they will not do a virtual event either. Frankly, I don't blame them. The cost of an arena with no crowd is high and I doubt they would get anywhere near the amount of sponsors they are used to. Is this cancellation definite, or just rumored.
What the USFS is doing isn’t a bubble; I don’t think bubbles are especially viable for figure skating, as it would require isolating the athletes in hotel rooms for two weeks, so you’d probably have to bring everybody to the event location at least a month in advance to give everybody time to train up again.
I fully appreciate the many challenges faced by SC in trying to hold the National Championships but I cannot help but feel that SC is demonstrating a serious lack of forethought and innovative thinking with their decision .
The number of skaters involved is very small compared to other sports and therefore highly manageable. They could have established training center " bubbles by renting rinks that were otherwise closed and housing skaters in rental homes or apartments for the weeks leading up to the Championship. After all Ontario is allowing ongoing training for elite athletes so quite a significant number of the top skaters did not have issues with continuing training which makes the number of skaters who would have needed this kind of help very small .
I appreciate that money is always a concern but here again where is the " where there is a will there is a way " attitude required.? They could have put together a virtual TV fundraiser featuring performances from the past by beloved skaters such as Virtue/Moir , Osmond , et al and asked the public to donate towards saving the season for the present group of potential Olympic team members. Just remember the overwhelming response to the Canadian Team's Olympic Gold - the public DOES care and I think money could have been raised if plans had been put into place sooner .
Look at the extraordinary plans Australia has implemented to ensure that the Australian Open takes place - look at the efforts of the USFSA re their Nationals Championships - look at just about any other sport and you can see the forward thinking and determination of their governing bodies .
I am sure many other Canadian skating fans would have ideas better than mine - but the point is throwing in the towel is potentially devastating to the current bunch of talented and dedicated up and coming skaters and sends a very negative message .
Maybe if we all make enough noise they will at least do a virtual competition even if it involved only Seniors and only those qualified for Nationals. Surely SC can manage that ?
Yes, the bubble was considered but this isn't pro hockey. It is way too expensive for the testing and quarantine. Skating is already on think ice. Canadian Tire would have to come up with more sponsorship I guess. The USA is taking some huge risks but they have far greater sponsorship. some thought maybe they should allow only the top ten to skate - but of course that would remove Gracie Gold.
Curling Canada is doing a bubble in Alberta, starting in February for the scotties, brier, mixed double championships and mens worlds, some teams could be in the bubble for months if they keep winning.
Okay Canadians, here's another question for you. What do you think of Rio Morita? Does he have a Senior Championship in his future? I know it's a bit early but, you never know.
Possibly you're not aware of a) the astronomical cost that those plans are incurring, b) the fact that they've allow 1,200+ people to jump the quarantine queue, thus making it even harder than it already was for some of the 38,000+ Australians still stuck overseas and struggling to get home to access the limited number of quarantine places available (which are limited, I'll point out, because our federal government refuses to recognise that running quarantine is its responsibility, not that of the individual states and territories), and c) how utterly, tearingly furious many Australians are that a rich sports tournament going ahead is being prioritised over the wellbeing of our stranded fellow citizens.
The Australian Open is not a good example to use to support your case.
If Canada sends a team to worlds and assuming worlds is a go who would you send? I think the pairs you have MTM/M for sure and probably Evelyn and Trennt. Dance would be Piper and Paul, the Danadians and the up and coming former champs whosenames escape me. I am not sure any of the ladies are a real consideration though they have two spots. It would be nice to see a revived Daleman maybebut the others are trying hard but not a lot of encouragement. I admit I can't even remember the champs name. As for the men wow I think sadly we didn't et to see if Gogolov rebounded back. Really it is Roman, Nam and Keegan with probably the safer choice being one of the latter two. But how Skate Canada picks the team is going to be interesting without a national championship and no real Grand prix to judge the skaters (yes, Keegan won bronze but that isn't a lot to judge by. Canada really was hoping to qualify two for the olympics in men. I thinkthis is a rarity that Canada has no real serious medal thrreat with very outside shos for a bronze in Piper and Paul or MTM / M in pairs.
