All personal preference, as a fan watching I enjoy the tricks, they’re amazing but also love, love the performance side of skating.
Lubov had great performance and struggled with the elements. Patrick Chan was a phenomenal skater, Baldi another performer.
Meagan was an amazing athlete, but I believe her pairs career started after her singles career ended, so she was older then these 15-16yr olds to compare.
Comments have been made of Walsh and lack of ‘natural performance’ but she’s improved.
The second mark may have a lot to do with performance, comparing a program stacked triple jumps and throws, to two programs with no triple jumps or throws, the weaker programs the second marks will suffer.
For sure ‘Mimi’ has time to develop in performance, just as the other teenagejunior and senior athletes have time to master elements.
I would think most athletes use ballet as a foundation. But weather it’s a ‘jumper’ mastering skating skill and performance or a ‘performer’ mastering the triples, that’s what makes it a competition.
Last season Mcintosh had the jump elements over Andrew, but Minto, Sectionals and Challenge A/D won each time. All these teams need time and a regular training season before to much judgment is given.
‘Mimi’ was joined as a team almost a year ago, I would suspect things to be coming along faster then late summer early fall teams.
MTM are on top, I suspect others can catch up in time, but wouldn’t want to be the one to chose which ones at this stage.

I love watching this virtual tournament. It is so well organized. I love seeing performances and then getting to see protocol results breakdown afterwards. Also, knowing everyone has performed, I love knowing that I will be able to watch figure skating tomorrow and next weekend.

I think we've already seen some improvement from Brooke this year. I doubt she'll ever be KMT-level charismatic, but I don't yet have a problem envisioning her becoming credible on that front. She's not that old yet.
I agree. Better interaction with Ben already. Hell, they actually hugged after their free program. I don’t think Brooke and Brandon ever made eye contact after a program in 5 years together. Also, though the camera work didn’t show it as well as at sectionals but Brooke has been smiling more this year than in the past. As for the other poster’s comment about Patricia and Zach last year beating Brooke and Brandon 3 times even though Brooke had triple jumps, Brandon didn’t so that’s a mute point. Now that she has a partner who can jump, and is stronger in other areas as well, much more potential now going forward. I have heard Brooke tends to be a somewhat quieter personality so I agree we may never see KMT like presentation but for example Nathan Chen makes it work for him when a Jason Brown is at the opposite end of the presentation spectrum. Time will tell.

I agree, elements seem to matter more then performance and only used their ‘last season’ as an example, Brooke did have triple throws and consistent 2A last season, Brandon did have a triple they just couldn’t get a pattern that worked for them both consistently, he skated junior men.
I think They did amazing today, staying in 4th and putting up a great score. She’s consistent jumping. Other top athletes her age seem to struggle with growth, Patricia (last season was the only one that gave her 2A trouble) Gogolev last season, Ruiter there’s talk that’s why her jumps are struggling, but we’ve not saw them skate, so let’s hope it’s just talk and they’ll all be jumping like we know they can. But on to Nationals, let’s hope it can be in person.

I’m with you on that. Thanks.

It was great watching that video interview with Balde today. I love his skating. I miss seeing him skate competitively, but am glad he is enjoying his professional performing career.

Brooke reminds me of Daria PAVLIUCHENKO of Russia. Right now she has zero expression, but she gets the elements finished. Daria/Dennis have been very successful over the past few years after winning world juniors in 2018. We're at a point in figure skating where the young skaters have to learn the big elements earlier in life, and worry about the presentation after. It's unfortunate, but that's what Russia ia doing, and they're winning almost everything on the Junior Circuit. I think Brooke/Benjamin are headed in the right direction, we'll know better if the JGP is back in 2021.

Also, I was happy to see Emy Carignan, because that incident at last junior nationals was one of the most horrific pairs mishaps I've ever seen, so it's great that she seems to be doing fine.
Yes, a moment I won’t forget. So nice to see her out there doing pairs and the partnership continue.

this week, they did senior pairs + junior singles and pairs... next week is junior dance + senior dance + senior singles...

We just saw Fiona Bombardier skate, daughter of Jean-Michel and one of our favourites @mrrice : Josée Chouinard... She is a very powerful jumper... had some issues today... but her 3lz-2t was HIGH and easy... just like Josée when she nailed a jump it was a beauty... She is only 15 and came from Novices last year, so we will see her at Nationals (top 12 qualified)

Sara-Maude Dupuis was the highlight of the night, followed by a close second in Melody Zhu... both girls delivered a lot of triples... Sara-Maude was the only junior, if i am not mistaken to land a 3-3 combo and all triple jumps (but the 3a of course)... She looks like she means business when she gets on the ice.

I remember that all too well. It truly was horrific - I also recall how devastated he was because he let it happen (though obviously not on purpose) and this awful drop reminded me of Maxim Marinin and Tatiana Totmianina which made Marinin feel so insecure afterwards. It also reminded me of Berezhnaya and Oleg Shliakhov where Oleg actually did drop her on purpose (this seemingly does happen). This definitely wasn't such a case, and I really felt for both of them. It must be so horrible to drop someone who totally trusts you. Argh!

happens all the time in life... but on the ice, it must hurt physically as well as mentally :)

I'm going to have to look her up. I always loved Josee.

She's great and has big jumps just her Mom..........Fiona Bombardier SP — 2021 Skate Canada Challenge - YouTube

With case numbers worse than they were when SCI was cancelled, I figured there was little chance that an in-person nationals would happen this winter. I was somewhat hoping they'd try to do it virtually, but it's possible TSN just didn't have any interest in doing that.

Which I guess will make Challenge the de facto national championships for the year.
