2020-21 British & Irish Figure Skating

Can‘t wait to watch all of them. I think that the athletes training in the U.K. have had some of the least amount of ice time of all the nations so to see them all make it through to the long programmes would be very special.

Glad to hear that Mark Hanretty, former ice dance competitor for GB is doing worlds commentary for the ISU in ice dance!

Here he is most recently performing with Yebin Mok for Dancing On Ice last month:

I'd like to hear his thoughts on Lilah & Lewis - wonder if they can make Top 10 this year?

I am so looking forward to seeing Zoe and Christopher. Pairs is my favourite, and these two have a very special place in my heart.

Just watched Zoe and Chris. So disappointed for them but I hope they are not in themselves. Their year must have been so challenging. The closure of U.K. rinks must have been a double disaster for them I have read somewhere that they run a skating school which is where all of their funding comes from. So as well as losing all of their own training time they must have also lost their income last year which must have been scary. In addition, Zoe has children so her year will also have been filled with home schooling and chaos. I am not surprised that they have only managed to fit 23 days of training into the year to prepare for this competition.

I have just watched the trailer for a new Serena Williams documentary. She is saying “Just never give up because you never know what can happen you never know who you can inspire and who you can influence“

iIf I had young children in this sport Zoe and Chris would definitely be signposted as role models for them. Their back story may put up barriers that stop them from being winners but they are real champions.

Go Zoe and Chris. Keep inspiring, keep influencing, keep breaking barriers!!

I am sure PJ will still have that enormous smile on his face despite not qualifying for the LP today but I would have loved to see him make it through.

I read the attached article about him and as with Zoe and Chris the double blow of losing his income and ice time this year must have made this competition seem quite daunting, but in true PJ style he came out and lit up every corner of the ice with his Yorkshire spirit.

I’m heartbroken for PJ but at least he can say that that his mistakes were that he gave to much! It’s such an amazing program!

Chris and Zoe are such inspirations I agree. Knowing they only had 23 days on the ice makes me so mad at the government for letting the ice skating community down. They should’ve had an exception so they could train.

Very excited about F&G and Natasha McKay making the free! The UK might have two spots in Dance!

Gotta say, I saw a big improvement in Lilah's skating skills today compared to the last time we saw them. Her SS have always been weaker than Lewis' but I felt they were both improved today, and Lilah especially. Good to see that they benefitted from the time in Montreal to train - I'm looking forward to seeing their FD as it's usually their stronger programme, I could see them creeping up to seventh!

I think he would’ve qualified too if he’d had the training. The government really punished our skaters.

Graham Newberry is getting real close to getting his 4S consistent. I can’t wait for Nationals!

Btw it was a little unclear before but Natasha did qualify the UK a spot in the Olympics! It’s highly likely that she’ll be the one to go but with Kirsten Spours big move to train with Florent Amodio she’ll be in contention too.

What are our opinions on who will attempt to qualify the second British spot in Ice Dance? Fear and Waddle or someone else? Are Tweedale and Buckland still skating?

I would assume it would be Fear/Waddell as they were the alternatives for Senior Worlds, which suggests they’re the next ranked British dance team.

I’ve been tweeting Simon Briggs; Natasha McKay’s coach (and sometimes PJ Hallum’s coach) and he said they are negotiating now that the enhanced requirements for going to the Olympics will be for Natasha. He said he hopes so leeway will be given because of the almost year break in training she had.

He sounds hopeful! Also he separately said he’s been at the last four Olympics either as a coach (in 2014) or an official (2010 and 2018) so let’s hope he can keep the streak going!

You would hope so, if they're reasonable.

Different countries have different philosophies about this, of course, but I find the mindset of not using a placement that you earned to be hard to understand.

Regarding the second dance place does George Waddell have British citizenship to compete at the Olympics ?

Well, his Dad's Scottish, so I'd like to think so!

Even if for some strange reason he doesn't have a British passport already, because he has a British parent, it shouldn't be any bother for George to get one in time for Beijing.

So, there should be no need for us to worry on that front.

Yup he does. In fact a part of the reason they became partners was because he was looking to switch to the UK and needed a British partner.

I wonder if his brother might make the switch too...?

Thanks for the confirmation.

As for Bruce, I would love to see that happen. We've got all the Fear sisters, now we need all the Waddell brothers!

And I would love us to get Alexander Petrov back as well.

Speaking of whom, any word yet on whether he has found a new partner since splitting with Livvy Shilling?
