Well Alena did skip 3 important competitions and didn’t make the worlds so it’s understandable. Maia and Dasha earned their place in the main team, they medaled in each competition.
Technically not true. Neither Maiia or Daria medalled at RusNats. Of course Aliona wasn't even there and Liza T did even worse. However, then Liza T won silver at World's and Maiia and Daria medelled at the RusCup Final. (Anna, Sasha, and Kamila were already locks.)

No, from the minute she arrives in Novogorsk. Remember that’s the national team training camp. The test skates is for the public, but for the RusFed officials, the wheels will be turning from the moment this summer break is over.
That's the case for everyone though.

All the RusFed just said was that they're not letting anyone rest on past accomplishments which is even more important for next year.

Can someone explain: What does that mean for Aliona's season? Will she still get a GP Spot?

The national team is tied to funding, she'll still get 2 GP spots, can still compete for an Olympic spot and she'll still get funding but as a reserve member not a main team member

I think this reads loud and clear to Alyona that her 3axel won't be enough. Learn the quad toe. She can totally get a 4toe. She's really the best overall skater amongst the top. I think that Kamila and Sasha have their places secured on the Olympic team and everyone is chasing for Anna's spot. Anna will not have a 3axel, so a 3axel and a quad would be enough for Alyona over Anna, given the right program. I hope this burns a fire under Alyona. She needs a quad, and preferably two of them.

Interesting that you think the 3-time defending national champ and World champ is the Olympic team spot up for grabs.

I think to win anything more than a GP event this season certainly needs more than that triple axel, which she still hasn't competed in over a year. My doubts on her getting a quad is that she has had issues in the past of getting injuries when learning new elements and it seems to take her longer to master a jump.

the thing is if Aliona shows up in 19-20 form, she can beat most everyone like she did that entire season internationally. her consistency is what paid off, and others inconsistencies that hurt them.

It's strange to think that, I know. But Kamila is by far the standard. The Russian team would be blind not to send Sasha. She can win any event she enters, it only takes that one perfect competition. Even 12th after the SP at Worlds didn't stop her from winning the free skate. I just think with Anna, it's a matter of when her jumps finally break down. Anna does have super competitiveness going for her. Nerves won't get to her, but I'm afraid her jump technique might do her in.

I would say on contrary, Anna’s spot is the most secure. She has an international reputation as Russian #1, she’s a world champion, she’s going to get the marks, she’s a reliable competitor, she won’t fall apart regardless of the level of stress and will deliver even if she’s not in a good shape.
I don’t think Aliona needs a quad to make the team. I think she’ll need a quad to aim for Olympic gold, but to make the team 3*3A would be enough. International judges love her skating, she’s got 2 major international titles, she doesn’t have to skate a quad program to get 240+.

i think Kamila and Anna would both have to have terrible seasons not to go. the likelihood of that based on history is not likely.

both of them showed far more than Sasha did this season. yes, she could win it all with one clean competition, but she's never really shown she can do that since she's been a senior. i think her bombed world short hurt her chances, and if she can't prove she can be consistent, there isn't much reason to send her.

So Usacheva (who’s on the main team) without a 3A or quad - as of last season - is enough? That makes...not a lot of sense. I do agree that Aliona won‘t have it easy without a quad but the national team doesn‘t have anything to do with it, IMO. They likely went by Nationals results + Worlds, neither of which Aliona attended. And at the Cup Final she had the worst competition of her career. I personally don‘t agree with the choice but you can certainly make a convincing enough argument for it.

Also: how on earth does Sasha have her Olympic spot secured if she‘s this inconsistent? She could have easily beaten Anna at Worlds, who made a lot of mistakes and had lower BV than usually, but she didn‘t. Because, sadly, the pressure once again got the better of her. She can become more consistent and she‘s certainly a frontrunner for the team but in no way does she have anything secured. The fed prefers stability, so I‘d say after Worlds and Rostelecom this season she actually has a lot on her hands to prove herself. No, the only one who‘ll have a somewhat easier route due to reputation will be Anna as she‘s the reigning 3 time National and a World Champ. But even she will have to do well, there‘s just too many girls.

Won't lie I was a bit gutted to see Aliona was the one left off the team but after thinking about it I guess it makes sense. And as others have said it just means you can't rely on past accomplishments and need to show up next season (same for everyone, really).

She better get that Guess sponsorship now lol.

Yeah exactly, that's insane scoring potential for someone with no Quad. Had Worlds 2020 gone ahead and she was clean she would've gotten 250+. People forget she still holds the record for Total Score.

Getting the 3A back is gonna be tough but she's done it before so hopefully can do it again. She can absolutely make the team with "just" a 3A if she is consistent all season. RusFed will want to send someone who can deliver and not just those with highest scoring potential.

Not considering titles.
From my point of view, Trusova now looks like a bad Swiss knife with a lot of options, from which sometimes something works. In my eyes, a Trusova does not look like a favorite of the national team, because she cannot do what is required of her at a quality level. The Russian Figure Skating Federation bets on her, because they see potential in her, but she needs to get quality, the same situation with Maya. If she does not receive the sequence, then any skater who has a sequence and at least 3A can take her place. So in this swarm of bees, everything is still undefined. Usacheva and Kostornaya can easily get around it if they are consistent and get a stable triple axel.
I am not rooting for one figure skater from Russia, because I myself am from Russia, and I know that at the end of the season I will be simultaneously happy and my heart will be broken, because some of them will not go, and I am rooting for everyone.

Now I just love to watch how all these girls making the new the history of figure skating.
