Pairs FS Worldwide: The Divine Discipline

Good to hear about pairs from Australia. The more countries in pairs the better - and that doesn't mean I have forgotten about Ekaterina and Harley and their major success at the junior level as well as their making it to the OG.

It just is good to see there are some up and coming pairs from a smaller country (in Figure Skating terms, not in acreage).

And here we might also want to mention those poster children for pairs who couldn’t stand each other, Stolbova & Klimov :) Their obvious distaste for each other was palpable on the ice, creating a weird dynamic that actually enhanced their appeal IMHO. They were utterly fascinating to watch, and of course, had a very successful career together.
They were absolutely beautiful! Their performance skills and expression of their programmes was second to none. Striving for success and being aware and convinced about their abilities was the only things they had in common. And that's all that mattered on the ice. Two absolute gorgeous individuals, in looks and skill. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

James/Radford are looking good on and off-ice:

How lovely -- so good looking together
It's nice too that their partnership is centered on friendship, professionalism and mutual goals, with no romance involved. That's another reason why it will be interesting to see how they approach their choreo and program selection.

The technique on the twist looks quite different here for Vanessa. I believe she got higher in the air formerly. But this twist looks good and I see that Vanessa utilizes a pretty arms akimbo position while twisting in the air. As commenters note: James/Radford have a similar style already, and their movement quality looks 'so easy and natural.' They 'flow' together with such 'grace.' And their long lines are to-die-for. They have a long line quality similar to Cain-Gribble/LeDuc.

Speaking of C-G/LD, their throw landings are looking amazingly improved. I wonder who they've been working with: :love2:

I see in the Canadian skating thread conversation that Phil Hersh posted a prediction on Twitter about James/Radford having a great chance for Olympic gold. Interesting...
A lot of very biased views in response

Hersh later had this to say:

It should definitely be a fun season for watching pairs overall. I do hope that pandemic logistics will have worked themselves out and not interfere overmuch with competitions this season. Fingers-crossed!

I wonder if Phil Hersh even watched the pairs competitions in March? I don't see how he could have, to make a prediction like that on the basis of a short clip.

Having said that, though ... I do love this clip and am so glad they posted it. To me, it demonstrates some of the qualities that I love about Vanessa and Eric's pairing; for one, that they hope and intend to create something together that hasn't been seen before. They have a really lovely quality of movement which is so smooth and expressive. I agree that their long-line quality is similar to Cain-Gribble/Leduc.

I'd say they'd have an easier time competing at Worlds than I suspect they are going have at the Olympics. I'm pretty sure the three russians and two chinese will have a say in that prediction Phil made. Especially Sui and Han. I'd say they will gun for gold more than any other pair.

Also, went to see that clip. That twist is good, but nothing special. The top ten at RN has a similar or better twist.

The footage was very nice. Promising. The twist looked to be smoothly executed.

But in agreement that Instagram clips are not a basis for predicting the OGM.

Not that I don't enjoy seeing these things. But the most that you can garner is the skater is working on a skill, is capable of a certain TES booster, looks to be improving speed and line, has potential to compete some elements very nicely... that sort of thing.

Yes indeed, Hersh can be OTT sometimes in his assessments. That's his style, and it has sometimes grated. Yet, he's improved his approach to writing about the sport over the years. Less unnecessary grandstanding and criticizing of skaters. Maybe he made this particular prediction to get a reaction, or maybe he really likes what he sees in the James/Radford practice clips.

A lot of people pointed out that Hersh failed to even mention the current world champions in his more explanatory follow-up post on Twitter. In any case, Mishina/Galliamov were lucky to make the Russian team cut for Worlds (due to COVID complicating their training last season), and they certainly weren't expected to win gold in their Worlds debut. They are still young and growing, and they have time ahead of them to further improve. It is not a given that they are favored for Olympic gold. IMO, Moskvina should be credited with helping both B/K and M/G to improve tremendously. Of course, both teams should be in the Olympic gold medal hunt. Keeping in mind that with Tarasova/Morosov moving to Eteri, she may be able to figure something out for T/M that no one has yet been able to do. It would be interesting if T/M pull it off and edge out S/H for gold in Beijing. I think many fans would be overjoyed for T/M, and boy would it be another feather in Eteri's cap. Honestly though, anything can happen. I think the Olympic podium is up for grabs among top contenders.

Regarding James/Radford, they seem to be making great progress, and it's just fun watching them over all. I can't wait to see what type of programs/lifts/choreo they come up with in collaboration with Julie Marcotte. BTW, check out the James/Radford fan fest thread, where I posted several practice clips I came across. Two of the clips show them executing sbs triples (salchow and 3-toe). They perform these sbs jumps quite effortlessly, and impressively close together with excellent unison too. But, I will wait to see how it all comes together for them in competition. It seems to be a fun and rewarding journey for them so far.

Also, solid consistency, smoothness and competent execution on triple twists garners good GOE, without huge height being absolutely necessary. As a veteran team, J/R know the importance of not trying to overdo, but simply maximizing consistency within one's skill parameters, while making a more significant impact in areas of top-notch strength. I like the look of the James/Radford 3-twist. The arms akimbo feature while twisting in the air looks so pretty on Vanessa.

I havent been on this forum or twitter for weeks - is it true that B/K are doing Swan Lake for their free skate?

Thanks <3 But what the heck is that screen playing commercials or something at the same time?

Looking through the new programs thread, I noticed the following:
Polina Kostiukovich & Aleksei Bruikhanov
SP: "Earned It"

So, I looked up this team on YouTube and found this from last season:

They look to be an excellent team who are very well matched, with much potential for growth. Right now, they are just skating and not really interacting with each other. Are they still in juniors?

K/B's sp selection for this season is, once again, proof of the continuing impact and influence James/Cipres have had on the entire pairs discipline, which I will acknowledge whenever I notice it. J/C's other music choices have often been used (Sound of Silence, Say Something, Make It Rain -- utilized in pairs, singles and ice dance), as have their innovative dance-inspired moves, costumes and program aesthetic been emulated by pairs skaters and choreographers.

I'm not sure K/B at their young ages can add much to what J/C did with Earned It, but it will be interesting to see K/B's version, and even more-so to witness their growth as a team.

Vanessa James & Eric Radford CAN
SP: "First Time;" performed by Josef Salvat
FS: "Promenade d'Antan" by Eric Radford, feat. Drew Jurecka

Gorgeous selections. Wow! I look forward to seeing both programs. Eric is so multi-talented. Bon chance, Vanessa & Eric, and thanks to Julie Marcotte, Drew Jurecka and Josef Salvat too. :hap10:

ETA:
The lyrics for First Time are so poignant and evocative, reflective of both a romantic relationship, and indeed even a non-romantic new pairs partnership between veteran champions. ❤️ Also, very reflective of meaningful partnerships that inevitably come to an end throughout changing seasons that are endless in life, and in figure skating. What a great music selection!

Snow moon cuts the river
Into a thousand lights
Dancing for us
Dancing for us
Jasmine on the breeze fills my room
And perfumes my nights
Dreaming for us
Dreaming for us

So don't worry 'bout it
The seasons were on our side
It was you before all of this
And now it's you for a life
No, don't worry 'bout it
The seasons were on our side
Even the greatest ideas
Have a life and die

Summer rain, the sky screams
With the things we can't say
Speaking for us
Speaking for us
Leaves hang in the wind
On their way to decay
Ending for us
Ending for us

So don't worry 'bout it
The seasons were on our side
Even the greatest ideas
Have a life and die
No, don't worry 'bout it
The seasons were on our side
It was you before all of this
Now it's you for a life

And I feel it come
Feel it flood my lungs
Cut me into strips
I have come undone
And I feel it come
Feel it flood my lungs
Cut me into strips
I have come undone
I have come undone
I have come undone ...

(For the first time)
I have come undone

Plus, English translation of the French Promenade D'Antan, is "Tour of Yesteryear" or "Yesteryear Tour"
Very fitting altogether. I'm getting goosebumps already. 😭 :dance3:  🚀 :cheer2:

I see that Eric posted a clip from the fp on Twitter:

Also, Vanessa & Eric have already debuted their sp, as posted by Colonel Green in the Canadian skating thread. It's on YouTube:

I love, love Vanessa's costumes for both programs. J/R are very smooth together, with such lovely lines, and a graceful aesthetic.

Pardon me, but I noticed coverage of the Quebec championship debut by J/R, and I had to say something about it:

Par for the course, but the negative critique (particularly against Vanessa) by Dave Lease is OTT. Jonathan Beyer followed right along in Lease's wake, but it was obvious that Beyer at least desired to be fairer. Still, their critiques are mostly unfounded, particularly in refusing to listen to the lyrics of the quiet, reflective music chosen by J/R. And being so obvious in trying to trash Vanessa's SS. There are plenty of skaters today who have very questionable SS, but those skaters are not routinely looked down on in the knee-jerk way that Vanessa is (and was previously with Cipres). Mostly unfounded. Vanessa has always been a fast, powerful skater with consistent jumps, and her SS have improved. I won't name names, but there are other skaters whose positive attributes are emphasized, even when they obviously exhibit poor SS coupled with a lack of speed. Yet, such skaters aren't routinely critiqued in the overly negative way that Vanessa is, by these same detractors.

I'm glad to see there are a lot of fans giving honest praise to James/Radford for their smooth skating, good unison, and their long, gorgeous lines. This is a very good debut by a newly paired team who are veterans and champions with former partners. As with every pairs team, they have things to continue working on, which is to be expected especially for new partners.

Deanna & Maxime are looking very good as well, with steady improvements even from early this year at the Canadian virtual competition. They are bringing back their fp from last season, and their sp is to a cover of No Ordinary Love. I enjoy D&M's choreo in both programs.

Lease is entitled to his opinions, as all of us are :) I think it wise not to put too much stock in his opinions, though, and to remember that he has had a longstanding friendship with Eric’s former partner, Meagan, who was quite aggrieved by the way their partnership ended.

Lease is also friendly with other pairs skaters who may not appreciate the prospect of having to compete against James and Radford.

Let’s all feel free to reach our own conclusions about the new team!

Of course. Exactly. I'm perfectly aware of Dave Lease's allegiances with Meagan Duhamel and with Kristen Moore-Towers. That goes without saying. The knowledge that Lease's opinions are often biased and/or petty will never prevent me from speaking out when I see egregious unfairness based in part on prejudice. Nowhere did I suggest that 'stock' needs to be taken in any of Lease's questionable diatribes. As a matter of fact, it's rather silly, false, and beyond the bounds for Lease to claim that Vanessa "doesn't match Eric," and "can't keep up with him." Such utterances call into question what exactly Lease is looking at.

Notice that it is not only Dave Lease who has consistently voiced biased critiques against Vanessa (& Morgan when they were partnered) related to the coded 'lack of SS' ubiquitous complaint. I made that clear in my previous post.

Dave Lease has an audience and a platform, and he's seen by some in the skating community as a 'useful tool.' That doesn't mean his opinions are the last word. He'll never change, as he does enjoy name-dropping, and being snarky. I refuse to make any excuses for Lease/Beyer, nor for those who enjoy partaking in that particular brand of gossip and innuendo. There are sometimes opinions Lease expresses with less pettiness that I may agree with on occasion. But for the most part, his shtick with Beyer grates. I go to TSL's YouTube channel and I browse through the latest episodes because there's a lack of timely and informative figure skating coverage, and there is often news of relevance contained within TSL's rambling episodes. Obviously, everyone is free to have and to voice their own opinions. Figure skating is a subjective sport. But I wasn't born yesterday. I've seen a lot that has gone on in this sport and in our culture in my many years. I will always call out unfairness in what I see when I think it's important to do so.

There are humungous nuances involved in this situation. Vanessa & Eric have the right to partner and to pursue competition in whichever way they choose. They are clearly being supported by Skate Canada, in part due to the need to rebuild Canada's pairs discipline. With two proven champions paired for this season, that may allow SC to field two strong pairs teams for Olympics and Worlds. While Trennt & Evelyn are very good, very gritty and competitive, they don't have the experience, stature or weapons needed to compete closer to the top, as M-T/M and J/R are expected to be able to do. Stellato/Deschamps are coming on strong with a well-matched, worthy partnership. But they are still developing and Deanna is not eligible for the Olympics. As I said earlier, J/R's partnership adds a lot of interest and excitement to the pairs field, not only within Canada, but also globally.

I realize that there are many fair-minded fans who see, accept, and applaud the desire and joy Vanessa & Eric are exuding on this journey. There's no sense in throwing potshots at J/R, neither individually nor as a team. J/R never said that they expect to win or even to medal. They are just going to go out there and give it their all and enjoy each step along the way. It's silly of Lease & Beyer to suggest that J/R promised to come out guns ablazin' with shock and awe, shooting everyone down. J/R are just trying to explore whatever uniqueness they can offer as a team. As a new team, they have certainly made extensive progress within a short time. With that in mind, J/R's debut was very good. It has helped them to see where they stand on competition ice. They will surely go back to their home rink to continue training, adjusting and refining. J/R's strengths are their smooth graceful movements over the ice, their gorgeous lines, their veteran experience, and their positive mindsets.
