2020-21 U.S. Men's Figure Skating

It's good to know that you talked to someone in the know at the rink.(y)
I called yet again today (Olympic gymnastic trials are in St Louis and I have to get my schedule straight - I can only afford so many things.) Lisa told me again both Collegiates and Philly International are taking place. Entries for Collegiates close June 15 bur I don’t see Philly International at all. This is sooo frustrating. And everything is soo far away.

On their website, Ice Works lists the Philadelphia Summer Championships (formerly Liberty Summer Competition--which used to run concurrently with the Philadelphia Summer International Competition, as I recall) as taking place this summer. But the page for the Philadelphia Summer International Comp still has 2019's info. So, I'm guessing the one is taking place, but not the other.

Normally I would agree, but this is Iceworks we’re talking about. They just posted the information about Collegiates on Friday and entries close on the 15th. Their website is horrible and usually out of date. Anyway another nice person has said they will call Iceworks and inquire.

Philadelphia International is not listed on the ISU's official 2021-22 season calendar -- which the ISU published on Tue Jun 8 (and which has had its own GS thread since then).

For me, the absence from the official ISU calendar makes it definitive that Philadelphia International is not happening this year.
For me.

ETA (on Jun 15):
Bending over backward to stress that my personal conclusion above is in reference specifically to Philadelphia Summer International.
(Whereas AFAIK the club competition Philadelphia Summer Championships is taking place.)

... this is Iceworks we’re talking about. They just posted the information about Collegiates on Friday and entries close on the 15th. ...

Going back at least several weeks, the official USFS page for 2021 Collegiates has been alive and well, and USFS social media has been publicizing the registration period.
So don't worry -- any skaters interested in entering Collegiates have had ample opportunity to see all the information. :)

Yaro must have been officially released by Ukraine. I just saw his name listed as part of the international selection pool. ...

My belated congratulations to Yaro. 🥳

Sylvia really does think that Philly International will only be a club comp; I have asked on Twitter if that is confirmed. By this time even IceWorks has had at least a preliminary notice in the past.

And I know this is the US men's thread, but I know some of the Philly International "crew" are here so I am going OT; I am bummed because Donovan confirmed he would have been there😭

Hey, Donovan skates for a North American country. I think he qualifies for discussion here :)

Is there anyone able to compete with Nathan? He seems to have the US title locked. He is so strong technically I don'tthink he has been beaten since the last olympics.

I think it’s safe to say that there’s approximately zero real competition for Nathan in the US. He regularly wins international competitions by 30+ points, let alone national competitions.

His closest competition in the US is probably either Jason or Vincent— that being said, he could still choose to take a nap in the middle of his short program and still mathematically beat them (and that’s not to take anything away from Jason or Vincent, it just shows how far ahead Nathan is)

I agree. Nathan has defeated Hanyu on more than one occasion and most recently at Worlds. IMO, He is the clear favorite as we head into the Olympic Season. I still don't know what to make of Vincent. He can be Brilliant in one moment but, the way he bombed at Worlds makes me worry. My problem with Jason ( As much as I love him ) is that he simply doesn't have the technical firepower to defeat the top Men if they all skate their best. Jason's big plus is that he rarely has a bad skate and is always a favorite with crowd.

Agree about the lack of competition for Nathan. It's sort of good that Hanyu is still competing though because it should drive Nathan to do better and better. As for Vincent.......................I think he skates with his head instead of his feet. He always starts out with great promise and then starts making little mistakes. Jason doesn't have the fire power but manages to stay in the conversation with his presentation skills. I would sure like to see some of the younger skaters start being competitive.

Camden Pulkinen has withdrawn from the 2021 Broadmoor Open after finishing the short in second place. Hopefully he's not injured.

It's possible that Camden's withdrawal was/is a planned withdrawal.

Broadmoor usually offers separate "SP only" events, as well as Combined events (SP+FS). But this year, it does not have "SP only" events ... so if someone all along had wanted to skate only the SP, withdrawing from the FS would make sense.

ETA:
Update that Tomoki Hiwitashi and Jordan Moeller also withdrew from the Broadmoor FS.

Congratulations to Max Naumov for his first GP assignment!
I'm very happy for him.

And I love that the Three Musketeers of Vincent, Tomoki, and Camden are assigned to NHK together.
Nice to travel with some of your best friends to the country with some of the best fans. 🧳 ✈️ 🍱 🍣⛩️

I wouldn’t necessarily assume he has an injury. In past years at Broadmoor, it’s been pretty common for skaters to skate only one program. It’s really early in the season so his FS may just not be ready yet.

Well, Tomoki just withdrew as well, so I'm guessing that's the case

Speaking of Broadmoor, Vincent just scored over 200 in the free for a combined total of 300. It would be a new PB for him if he was skating internationally. While I'm sure these scores can be taken with a grain of salt, as it is the US scoring him, he landed four quads and a triple axel, all with positive GOE. Worlds seems to just be a fluke, and I think he's probably back in the running as a top contender to go to Nebelhorn and the Olympics.

I hope Vincent is. I felt so sorry for him at Worlds, and if that was just a fluke (and I'm hoping it was), I'd be glad to see him as a top contender again!

Vincent's FS jumps included 4 quads and 2 triple axels, all with positive GOE.

There were a total of 3 withdrawals (which should not be assumed to be a signal of anything, to repeat my broken-record comment) from the senior men's FS: Jordan Moeller, Tomoki, and Camden.

Maybe not a fluke, but perhaps more of a wakeup call? Sometimes it's the humiliating defeats that propel athletes to a higher level, like what happened to Nathan at the Olympics. It'll be interesting to see where Vincent goes from here, as these scores would certainly make him a top Olympic/World contender.

I’m glad he did well! He must have been devastated at Worlds, but it sounds like he’s fully recovered and determined to prove he should be on that Olympic team.
